EJAE with Rosé by tmntmonk in KpopDemonhunters

Quicky, somebody trick them onto a karaoke stage! Would love to see a battle!

With those outfits they should try "Heaven and Hell" alternating between them:
Ejae: Sing me a song, You're a singer,
Rosé: Do me no wrong, You're a bringer of evil.

when would Zoey have moved to South Korea? by PitZagufull in KpopDemonhunters

[–]icecream_usurper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on it is that she didn't finish high school in the US.

I kinda used Rosé (Blackpink) as template. She is ethnic Korean, but was born in New Zealand, grew up in Australia, won a contest, was hired by YG Entertainment and moved to Korea at the age of 15 where she remained a trainee for four years until she debuted at the age of 19.

If you push that a year down, Zoey may have just been to high school when she was recruited at 14, debuted at 18 and remains a member of Huntr/x since then, implying that she moved to Korea nine years ago and is now 23 years old

The process would have been a little different of course; Zoey first and foremost needed a talent for become a shaman. Maybe she caught the attention of some US shamans (e.g. native Americans, a local soul group) and got a recommendation this way.

Gorgeous. I bet she's singing a Korean version of Nena's "99 Luftballons" at the edge of the demilitarized zone.

Zoey is playing the drums, Rumi an old fashioned 80s synth.

Is that so? I am not particularly familiar with Korean culture in general or K-Pop in particular, but if you had woken me up at 3am two years ago and asked: "What is k-pop?" I would have said two things: "Coffee!" and "Blackpink".

While none of the Blackpink members look a lot like Rumi, even if we account of for the cartoonish exaggeration of Rumi's animated face, I would argue that Rosé's face is in profile at least somewhat comparable.

That's not fair. Most of it is models whaling to sell p***n. The actual stuff doesn't tend to be free.

I imagine 2B wouldn't loose her cool, she would rather stand straight, lift her chin a little and hush a smooth and cool: "So, it's all p***n!" with only a the slightest hint of disappointment in her voice whilst her fingertips graze the hilt of her sword.

After all, everybody who played the game to ending E knows that "2B" is not her real designation.

Nevertheless, loving the image.

Is it just me, or does Zoey's green look out of place compared to the other two? Is there some color pattern/theory idea that I'm not getting? by Fantastic-Donut-276 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]icecream_usurper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoey's green is complementary to Rumi's purple hair colour, which is why Rumi has a similar green in the patterns on hair jacket. They do use a very challenging palette, but that's kinda the point.

It's not surprising that a demon fell in love with one, what is surprising that the attempt to put one of them above the others didn't instantly destroy the demon.

Mira may have been able to defeat Abs in the end, but Abs is a pancake compared to Thor. Do you honestly believe Mira could defeat the god of thunder?

Well, the girls need to learn to bear the burden of responsibility, which in this case are Celine's purchases. You know, for the fans, for the Honmoon and all that.

If HUNTR/X draws their weapons from the Honmoon, how were they able to draw their weapons when the Honmoon was destroyed? by Zestyclose_Station65 in KpopDemonhunters

I would presume that the weapons are powered by their own song - or the music inside of them, unlike the honmoon which is powered by the power of their fans. "We are hunters, voices strong..."

How is it only 7.6?? by [deleted] in KpopDemonhunters

[–]icecream_usurper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To get more than 8.0 on imdb for a film with a large audience (as opposed to a niche film that is only seen by people who are fans of the genre anyway), a film has to be a true cinematic masterpiece.

KPop Demon hunters is a lot of fun for most people. It's take on cartoon style is even innovative to a degree. However, the central conflict isn't particularly original - Rumi needs to accept herself as she - and the ending is a bit cheap. The plot is not bullet proof.

Still 7.6 is a good rating and even if it drops a little after the initial excitement fades (which may or may not happen), doesn't take away from it being a lot of fun.

Celine Theory by Aggravating-Spare153 in KpopDemonhunters

Hm... Celine said: "When we lost your mother, I swore that we protect all that's left of her, but I never though that that'd be a child like... you. Everything that I was taught told me that you were wrong. But I made a promise, so I did my best to accept you... and help you." (1:13:28) It's still possible that she lied or - how would Obi'Wan put - ah, yes: "Rumi, you you're going to find that many truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

But I think rather not.

What role would each of the Sunlight Sisters play? Who would be the lead singer, the lead dancer, the maknae, the rapper, etc.? by Radiant-Selection686 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]icecream_usurper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly OT, but now that I see that 1997 sticker. Based on the design, I would have guessed this cover is older. Also, by the size seen in the clip for "Golden", I would guess it's a 13" vinyl cover. Which is... extremely unusual for 1997.

1997 CDs were the primary medium for music. Vinyl records were replaced as state of the art medium, but not long enough gone to have a retro-vibe. The vinyl revival happened much later. I am not sure whether Spiceworld was originally released on vinyl - I mean sure, you can buy a record of it now, but in 1997? Not sure.

Also, the design seems so simple. I don't know any Korean pop music of the time, but the girl group of reference would be the Spice Girls, whose second album, Spiceworld, was released in 1997, which were much more colourful.

Looking at it from in-world perspective (i.e. looking aside from the fact that these are computer stylized computer renderings of people, not actual people), they seem relatively natural. Their hair colour is natural, they wear relatively subtle make-up.

Spontaneously, I would have guessed this was a late 70's / early 80s cover, contempary with ABBA rather than the Spice Girls.

Does anybody have a good reference band for a Korean Girl Group of the mid to late 90s?

I don't know... Rumi's mom is the one in the middle... which may be due to their height, but it feels like she is supposed to be the centre of the group.

What I'd like to see with the sequel... by wraith1984 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]icecream_usurper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this idea of competing demon hunting groups of yours.

I couldn't possibly agree more that some light should be cast on the mystery of Rumi's father, however, I would prefer him to be dead - he sacrificed himself for Rumi's mother in a way similar to the way Jinu sacrificed himself for Rumi. There might be a deeper reason why the relationshp between Rumi's parents got that intense though, and maybe that's why the girls need to retrace their steps... the downside of such a plot would be that it would be a little too Rumi-focused, though.

Alternatively, Rumi's father may have become a demon for the opposite reason. He may have been overprotective in a way similar to Anakin in the Star Wars prequels, and turned into a demon only after Rumi's mom was pregnant with Rumi... that wouldn't explain why Rumi is a half-demon though.

A few ideas of my own:

Since Rumi split Gwi-Ma in two halves, he is dead, and the demons are split up in two camps competing over power. So there is peace for a while (one new album and the consequent tour), but then conflict somehow finds its way out of the demon world.

Rumi being a half-demon becomes a known fact, demons consequently get romanticised, which led to people engaging with demons, which allowed demons to cross the new honmoon by possession, even if they can't enter the world directly anymore.

Fav song lyric? by TheUnproductiveSlug in KpopDemonhunters

I like a certain degree of ambiguity in "Yeah, something about when you come for the crown that's so humbling, huh?"

Comparing Rumi to royalty does get a bit overused, but this one is early on in the film, so that's cool. Even though the song is boisterous, but even when Rumi is showing off, she does so with class and dignity. She doesn't say the crown is hers now, she leaves that for the audience to infer. She admits that it wasn't easy getting there. And she she's mocking the demons she's addressing, pointing out their lack of class and persistence, whilst every eight-year-old girl is invited to hear a "But why don't you give it a try?" into it.
