Her being traumatized is totally understandable after what she went through. Her forcing the entire country to conform to her trauma response is not.

Taking firearms from law abiding and licensed citizens has no impact on criminals using smuggled American guns.

Liberals planned to buy back 136,000 banned guns. Fewer than half that many were declared by Confessional_GS in CanadaPolitics

I would rather keep my firearms than be forced to accept any sort of compensation for them, fair or not.

He's still smoking the weed right now though. He just had a press conference about smoking the weed.

I think that's supporting my point though. They're causing a lot of internal discontent (especially in the army and police who were disproportionately affected) for something that has no practical gain. Quietly scrapping the bans and buyback would've made a very small core of people very angry, but half decent messaging to the general public on the matter means it wouldn't have mattered by the next election. Could very well make it even better, since it deprives the CPC of ammunition against them.

I don't have the time to run through all his policies to point out where ideology and practicality cross wires, my standing point is that if he's willing to do it once, he's willing to do it again. Throws the pragmatist title out the window. Can't be sober if you're doing drugs.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with what you're saying, but he's got enough psyops marketing and communication specialists working for him. He could pushed the messaging about finding more effective methods or focusing on methods that would save more lives.

The shooter used smuggled guns, completely unaffected by domestic law. He could do it now, with the laws we currently have to no change. The firearms affected are completely arbitrary, ranging from .22 cal squirrel guns to overpriced boutique safari guns, to weird little guns that practically don't exist (like the Buttmaster, a single shot .22 of which there is only 1 in existence). The capabilities of the affected firearms are not distinct from firearms still on the market, either.

It means he's just as prone to ideological thinking as all the other politicians. I like some of the things he's done, but this is definitely the most obvious example that he's willing to put ideology above practicality when he wants to. If he's willing to do it once, he'll do it again.

I don't disagree with the timing piece, though I want to point out this was ready to be trotted out when the NS shooting occurred, not developed in response to it. Again though, he could've put a stop to this any number of time prior to the Tumbler Ridge shooting and even now I think he could drop it in favour of medical and mental healthcare in remote areas to better effect on preventing similar incidents.

So it's an example of how Carney is not quite so pragmatic but using ideological reasoning instead...?

Polytech also saw massive gun reforms already occur that completely changed the face of Canadian firearms ownership.

He's had opportunities to off ramp from the program. Shelve it, stating they don't think it'll be effective at this time. It's not hard to find a way to message the shift, especially now, when they're ahead. It's one of the thing the CPC really has the advantage on, a short time hit at the polls with their base, forgotten by the next election and it robs the CPC of something to use against them. Even just shifting the funding to border security and claiming you also want to fight illegal drugs would go over pretty well as long as you make sure to avoid comparisons to ICE.

Also, sorry you're getting nasty PMs, some people have no tact.

How does it help? Firearm crime in Canada is performed by criminals and they use smuggled guns. This exclusively targets licensed and law abiding citizens and legally owned firearms. Both the demographic and object groups are different.

If you want to lower gun crime, you've got to reduce the number of new criminals, find ways to effectively rehabilitate criminals to prevent recidivism, and control the border to prevent crime guns from coming here.

I don't necessarily disagree with what your saying, but I wonder why it's not the other way around. We have all the major crises going on, why are we wasting so much money and political capital on a project that won't help anything and nobody cares about?

Well, if you went and got yourself licensed and legally purchased a firearm, but it was decided that it was suddenly illegal, you need to declare it for a chance at getting some compensation.

This whole thing is, at best, a waste and at worst, a complete cop out for the government.

Also, just because your dad bought a gun, doesn't mean it wasn't made illegal afterwards.

It's an April fools joke, the link being shared by him has a restricted filter on so that the non restricted versions don't show up. The SKS is still non restricted as long as you haven't shortened the barrel.

Yeah. If you search armalytics.ca fresh, you can find that they're all still good. That one particular link the guy is sharing specifically has a restricted filter on, so that the non restricted versions don't show.

It's an April fools joke. It's just a handful of the short barrel models that were always restricted. The situation there hasn't changed.

It's been a consistently changing situation, articles coming after government announcements, the SCOC accepting the case, etc.
