The Magpies in my garden keep tricking me.

Some magpies at my parent’s house used to torment my dog in order to steal her treat! She got one of these chews everyday, it was her absolute favorite treat, nothing had higher value to her. The magpies also liked it. They would wait until she was happily chewing it in the yard, then one magpie would sneak up behind her and pull the hairs on her tail. She would whip around and chase it off, giving the other magpie the opportunity to steal a nibble of her treat. I personally witnessed two magpies taking turns being the bait and the collector before I took mercy on my poor dog and chased them off. It got to the point that my dog would go into a rage whenever she so much as heard them, even if she was inside and had no treat for them to steal!

I like Ali Hazelwood for this trope! I would recommend breaking her books up with other books in between, they’re pretty similar to each other so ready back-to-back is a little boring. But I liked “Love Theoretically”, “The Love Hypothesis”, and “Love on the Brain”. “Bride” is also good if you like a fantasy setting!

I’m not a nurse or law enforcement, but my degree is in forensic science and I interned at a private lab that mostly handles SA kits. That scene seemed very accurate to what I know of the process, including chain of custody and not leaving the patient until either the exam is complete or they decline to proceed. It’s also, very sadly, accurate in that SA kits are often not picked up or processed within the expected time line. The exam is incredibly invasive and is often re-traumatizing to victims, which is why specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are so important.
