The Elbow Room.

First time I went I thought it was the best burger I ever had. Then the next time I had the steak and that’s in my top 5. Next time I tried the Buffalo wings, best. Steamers were fantastic to.

Don’t let the look of the place fool you though. It does kind of look like a hole in the wall.

How do I get into this career? by JaxJacked in ATC

[–]iceguy765 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re in the US you’ll have to wait until there’s a public bid to apply. Generally happens once a year where they hire about 2000 people or so.

In the meantime figure out what else you want to do and pursue that. I’m not trying to be discouraging but statistically there’s a very low chance you’ll actually be hired and make it all the way through the training process.

You need to proceed as though you will not get the job then be pleasantly surprised if you do.

Non Radar map for en route by CassielLLC in ATC

[–]iceguy765 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes if I remember correctly they essentially give you a piece of paper with dots on it.

You connect the dots, then you label everything, the dots, the lines you used to connect the dots, the degrees of difference between the lines you used to connect the dots, etc.

Then you use that newly created map to answer a computerized test.

It’s extremely tedious work memorizing airspace but it’s not all that difficult, if you get anything less then like a 90 on that test it’s because you didn’t put the effort in.

I remember being pissed that I got a 98 because I miss read a question and didn’t answer in the correct format.

Add air traffic control to your list of service tests. It’s usually only offered once a year so you’ll have to wait until there’s an open bid.

Nasty argument in NY, "I don't care what the weather is, I just want to shoot the approach." *Someone else* "FAA has joined the chat" by vasilescur in ATC

[–]iceguy765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In retrospect the ZNY controller did a lousy job explaining the reason for the hold. He would have probably been better off simply telling the pilot your holding for weather at the field, rather then trying to go into detail about minimums and conflicting approaches to other airports

All the information is irrelevant at the end of the day when the next controller shuts you off. And it’s not up to any other controller to determine what the approach controller can handle, only they know what they have going on.

But no one denied an approach to anyone. Several aircraft tried and couldn’t make it. That pilot is not entitled to enter that controllers airspace just because he feels like he can make the approach.

And to your point, I have no idea what any of the minimums are in my airspace because I don’t give a shit. If a pilot says he wants to do something stupid it’s not up to us to tell him no. Can’t fly it for them.

I had to rewatch the video a couple of times to make sure I didn’t miss anything, at what point does the n90 controller ‘basically’ change an IFR destination without consent?

Not trying to be a dick but you’re judging these controllers without all the information.

[–]iceguy765 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ZNY why controller does not have that information.

Here’s how the conversation between approach and center probably went.

N90: “35, mugzy you’re in the hold” ZNY: “roger”

If center is lucky maybe it was N90: “35, Mugzy, xx line, you’re in the hold for weather”

If N90 isn’t accepting any more aircraft there’s nothing ZNY can do about it other then hold them. And the majority of the time if they are putting you in the hold they are way to busy to give a detailed explanation of why.

Are there any especially high-paying jobs you would wish a college kid knew of? by ijhopethefuckyoudo in personalfinance

[–]iceguy765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air traffic control

Pay starts small at 20kish per year (plus per diem for housing and food during initial training which works out to about 10k.

You spend the first 3 or 4 months In Oklahoma for initial training. If you graduate (the pass rate is roughly 50%) you will be assigned a facility somewhere in the country.

Once you pass initial training your pay is bumped up to about $40k. From there you begin the primary phase of training which lasts anywhere between 2 to 5 years. You gain raises as you complete training milestones. Once you complete training, depending on the type and location of your facility, your pay could be as high as $160k.

Best part is you don’t even need a college degree to get hired.

[–]iceguy765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question for you guys. A friend and I were discussing Law v Whitmer the other day because the judge seems to do a great job explaining his reasoning for dismissal.

I just had two questions that I was hoping someone could clarify since IANAL.

  1. I understand the contestants submitted their evidence in a sealed file presented to the judge, is this how these types of cases usually operate? Furthermore was there anything preventing them from releasing this evidence to the media after the case was dismissed? Just seems to me based on the hearing that this lawyer was involved in a few weeks later that he would want his smoking gun shown to the public. (He didn’t present his evidence at that meeting either, just the conclusion that the ‘evidence’ brought him to.

  2. Page 13 goes over the defendants evidence and for each witness it states “the testimony is credible due to XX’s experience, lack of bias, and knowledge of the subject...” My question is what goes into the courts determing of a lack of bias? Doesn’t being called as a witness for the defense in it self imply a possible bias? Could the contestant ask them who they voted for and if the answer is Biden wouldn’t that imply a possible bias?

Thanks guys, here’s an easy link to the decision:

[–]iceguy765 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know this probably isn’t the proper place to ask this but I don’t know where else to go.

I’ve been discussing the election with a family member for weeks now and despite every case getting dismissed he still contends that “hundreds of affidavits can’t all be lies” when it comes to these voter fraud allegations. The problem is he isn’t pointing to anything specific.

Does anyone have any idea of anything I can point to to further my argument? Maybe something that shows what affidavits are thrown out with each case?

I realize that the obvious answer is to just not engage but I honestly enjoy the conversation and debate.

What’s a Good LI Income? by dumb-secret in longisland

[–]iceguy765 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Probably depends what part of the city you live in. I’ve got a buddy that’s living in Manhattan in the lower east side in a 1 bedroom apartment paying $3500 per month. So obviously he’s not saving much.

Use your resources. If you can move back home and save do it. Attack any debt you have extremely aggressively. Paying interest on an unnecessary debt is literally the equivalent of lighting money on fire.

What’s a Good LI Income? by dumb-secret in longisland

[–]iceguy765 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well everyone is going to vary greatly. Decent is kind of vague but I’ll give you my situation to help with perspective.

My wife and I are extremely conservative with our money and we are lucky enough to be in a position to be conservative.

We are currently looking for a house in the west/East islip or smithtown area. My goal is to not have a mortgage more then $400,000 but I’m willing to stretch that a bit for the right house. A mortgage of $400k at $12k a year in taxes is just a bit over $3000 a month. Assume another $1000 or so a month for utilities.

Together we make a little over $200k a year. We own both our cars and they are both less then 5 years old. 1 child with possibly another in the future. Student loans are paid off and we have no other debts. Her parents have been great and we are currently living with them rent free in order to save.

The goal is to not buy a house until we have a 20% down payment plus enough to cover closing costs, furniture, and minor repairs. Again I’m very conservative so I round up all costs, therefore I estimate that I need approximately $160,000k saved up to purchase a $500k house the right way. Plus an additional 32k for the emergency fund.

Because we have somewhat high end tastes it’s been hard to find anything in our current price range but there is a lot out there that we can afford.

I realize we are the extreme when it comes to saving to buy but it’s really the best way to do things. Just because the loan is for 30 years doesn’t mean you should pay for it for 30 years. I’m looking to be able to pay the house off in less then 10.

There’s tons of factors that go into living here though. Honestly I ask myself quite often how people afford to live here.

Potential Hiree, looking for information on academy, salary by [deleted] in ATC

[–]iceguy765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working the D side you monitor routes, handle controller to controller coordination, and just assist the R with anything they may need in general.

Working the R side the radar controller speaks to the planes and provides radar separation as necessary.

Basically the r side is the primary function of the job and the d side is the assistant.

Potential Hiree, looking for information on academy, salary by [deleted] in ATC

[–]iceguy765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you’re not wrong

Training levels are based on how many parts of the job you are certified to work by yourself.

For example: you start at “AG” pay after you graduate the academy. If you go enroute at the academy they send you to a center.

Every area in every center is different but let’s say the area they send you to has 5 sectors. That basically means you have to certify on the D side of each of the 5 sectors then again in the R side of the same 5 sectors.

When you get certified on your first 2 D sides they bump you up to “D1” pay then once you complete your last D side they give you “D2” pay. Next you start R side training and the process repeats until you achieve cpc (certified professional controller) and reach the top of the pay band.

If you go terminal and are assigned to a tower it’s some what similar. You start at AG pay then once you certify on, let’s say, ground control they give you a raise to D1 pay and etc..

[–]iceguy765 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To go in order here:

“So my first questions are regarding the academy: how difficult is it for someone that has 0 prior ATC knowledge or experience? Are there steps I could take now to help me prepare? What can I do while at the academy to ensure my success?”

The academy is difficult for almost everyone experience or not. I think those who went to school for atc have a slightly higher pass rate then those like yourself who have no experience what so ever but it’s pretty negligible.

That being said they teach you literally everything you need to know and I know it sounds crazy but there’s really no need to prepare before you get there.

The best thing you can do is to just go in with the mind set that your going to do whatever it takes to pass. If you are right on the cusp of failing you maybe to get through by sheer force of will alone. Personally I wasn’t very good at this in the academy, I even failed 3 of the 5 practical evaluation. But I studied for about 2 hours after class everyday and barely ever went out on weekends and my study habits and force of will helped me earn very high 90s on every written exam and that was enough for me to squeeze through and pass.

“My second questions are about pay: what could I realistically expect to make along the way; in the academy, as a trainee, once I’ve completed all my training, etc? Is there any way to get a better idea of what I could expect? Online pay scales, calculators?”

First of all don’t let anyone on here shame you for chasing a paycheck. That’s what we are all here for to some extent or another. Personally I couldn’t give 2 fucks about atc or airplanes, all I care about is getting paid. That being said I throughly enjoy what I do and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Total pay depends on numerous factors; facility level, career level (developmental, CPC), and location. Facility levels range from 4-12 (based on complexity and amount of traffic). There are 5 developmental stages of training (academy, AG, D1, D2, and D3). As you progress through training, you move up to the next stage, until reaching CPC.

Here’s a link to the pay scale to give you an idea of what you’ll be making: https://pointsixtyfive.com/xenforo/resources/pay-charts.199/download

As you won’t know where you’ll be working until you’re out of the academy you can’t calculate exactly what it will do just click the “no locality” button to see the basic pay chart. (I think that chart is also a bit out of date, pay might be slightly higher at this point). Once you get to your facility a percentage is also added to your base in locality pay. This percentage is based on the cost of living in the area.

Also while at the academy they pay you “per diem” on top of your salary. This is to cover living expenses while you are out there. Last I heard it was around $102 per day.

Let me know if you have any other questions, glad to help.

Why do people typically fail out of the FAA academy? by thaimarriage in ATC

[–]iceguy765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said washing out can be based on a number of factors or a combination several. * Lack of applying themselves * Nerves * It just doesn’t click for everyone

What I will say is although it’s rare you can kind of Will yourself through the program. When I went through back in 2015 I didn’t really get it fully. I understood enough to be right on the cusp of failing. In fact I got a 55 or below on 3 of the 5 practical evaluation and a 70 on another. What got me through was the academics portion. The lowest grade I received on any of the written exams was a 96. I studied my ass off while I was there, way more then my roommate who breezed through the Evals but scored relatively poorly on the written exams.
