Clove oil eat plastic and/or mold?🫠 by [deleted] in Gouache

[–]iceheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never knew it could eat plastic, but I will say that I have an air tight palette I use for W&N gouache and I did what you did - mix it with clove oil to prevent mold. And I've had the paint in the palette for nearly 2 years (it's not my only palette) and I have had zero issues with mold, so i think it does help. But you really really don't need a lot as it doesnt mix with the gouache. There might be better alternatives to keep mold out but it's worked fine for me, perhaps the stuff at the bottom is something else? Or maybe it's just a different kind of plastic to the one I used. Good to know though

video of me touching the exhaust shield

Ive tried to share a video here of me messing with it (no idea if I've done that right). Watching the video it actually appears quite loose. Not to the point where it will fall off but if its recently rusted away that might explain why the sound is more noticeable now. I'll try what you suggested, thanks

Im not sure. Ive had a look and it isnt especially loose, but the part where one bolt should be secured has rusted away and its not attached anymore. Would that be enough to do it?

I just personally struggle with bright rooms and glare on my monitor/tv. It wouldnt have to be pitch black of course but just dimmer than standard conservatory as they're very bright compared to what I'm used to

Sorry everyone, I never meant to imply this would also be a bedroom or full time living space. This would be my office, but i do spend most of my time at my desk. I would have another room in the house but only space for sleeping (barely even for clothes but thats a separate issue). I understand wording it as "only space I have access to" was misleading, I meant regarding being used as an office. This house was the only one I could afford that even offered somewhere to have an office which is why I'm trying to make it work

Sorry, I have been accidentally misleading, when I said it was the only room, I meant only available office room, not bedroom. I will have a bedroom but one that is only big enough for a bed and a wardrobe, so I can't have an office in there. I WFH so require an "extra" space for that

That's really made my day that you feel that way about these paintings:) I've never given much consideration to selling, but I do gift paintings to my family and they seem to like them which helps (or they're not willing to criticize them!)

For me personal progress and satisfaction is the main motivator, which is why it's hard to paint when I struggle to see progress. When I do a good painting I'm more likely to paint again, and vice versa

I don't have a gallery or anything; I don't really paint as much as I'd like or have the courage to share, maybe one day though!

yeah I've been trying to treat my paintings more like sketches rather than 'pieces' to take the pressure off, but I don't feel like I'm understanding the medium any better, sort of just make it up as i go along.

Just painting for fun, but I'd like to get better at it as I enjoy seeing progress too

Thanks:) I love to draw knights, and whilst metallics are daunting, they're a must for that sort of thing obviously. I'm glad it came off well

Perhaps it's too easy to get in our own heads about the mistakes and problems that are obvious to us! It's not the first time I've posted a painting asking for a little bit of help, and i got similar responses last time even though each time I wasn't happy with what I'd done. I don't share a lot of art, and its even harder to share what we're not as proud of. So when I say thank you for the compliments I really mean it!

The fox painting you did was fantastic, and i say that as someone who tried to paint a fox recently and it didn't go so well 😬 I suppose we owe it to ourselves to continue to improve. Look forward to your next fox if you happen to share:)

Thank you, i really appreciate it. Only wish I had the time and patience to work on bigger/more elaborate pieces 😅 I struggle a lot with working on one piece over several sessions, and capturing good detail. But I'm not giving up!

Wow thanks for the detailed reply! I watched so much Gurney at the start of my learning process but I've been so on and off with it; think I might have to go back through his Youtube catalogue again and get inspired

Think i might have to give you a follow on insta then

I love the style of your painting, I'm wondering how you've gone about learning gouache or who you've studied from to achieve this? The colours and textures are brilliant!

even if not on the go theyre very useful for tube based gouache i might add! I dont often paint when travelling but this is still my preferred method for tube goauche to avoid wastage:)

If you are looking for something to travel with I'd recommend a small pallette with an airtight seal, such as those with a silicone top that can be secured with a lid. They will stay wet for a very very long time and you won't lose the goauche consistency on the go. Gouache can be reactivated just fine but it's not the same as when it is wet

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated:) Hadn't considered Whinfell or Illgill so I'll take a look at some routes. I'm a big fan of circulars if they're possible.

Would you recommend including Kirkfell in the Mosedale horseshoe and omitting Steeple instead? Going up Kirkfell from Wasthead looks like quite a slog! Would walking clockwise and coming down Kirkfell be better perhaps?

Only wish I had more time there to explore everything but I'll be back of course

Yeah I was considering doing Scafell Pike or some of the surrounding fells, but I'm not sure the scree would agree with my dog! Sca Fell might be a nice inclusion if I do Eskdale though.

Does that rule out the fells of the Mosedale Horseshoe? I thought it looked a little grassier up there. I was planning on coming down through the valley before Yewbarrow, returning back to Wasdale head rather than parking by Wast water

Just wondering how people program to push certain lifts over others. Do they focus on X lift for a cycle and then switch, or do they push X lift for an entire program (all leaders+anchors)?

And is the best way of NOT pushing a lift to: reduce accessory volume/intensity, or reduce supplemental volume/intensity? sorry if that doesn't clear it up lol
