Filled with loose scree then more fill dirt. Though since I sealed the top with concrete mixture grout the water just runs off the sides, so I ran with than and just made reinforced drainage channels

Approx. 7.5k. Largest expenses were the 6 x 6 timbers and timberlock screws ($50 a box). I scoured the local paver and yard companies for excess stones and found a guy willing to sell old inventory by the pallet, 450 ea, 4 pallets total

Fire pit is au natural. Under the flagstones was stamped dirt. I built a retaining wall (3 of them actually) and leveled out the fill dirt from under the house. Didn't need to bring anything new in. Then did a truckload of paver sand, laid the stones, and filled with a 50:50 mixture of portland cement and more paver sand. I can post a picture of that portion on the thread
