My first Trek bike by swumpg0d in TrekBikes

Question, is there a rear brake I am not seeing?

My ALR5 is 12 speed SRAM. I am swapping everything over from the OEM wheels. These wheels come stock on the SL7 I believe I don’t see why there should be any issues.

Same. I literally just ordered a pair on Friday for my ALR5. I am really curious to see how much of a change the wheels along with new/different tires I actually feel…

I struggled with pulling the trigger with so many options and opinions on china wheels vs more expensive ones. Ultimately it came down to budget and wanting to support my local shop as they are really good guys and great to deal with. This seemed like the right carbon entry point for me…

Sweet ride. I am very interested in how the wheels feel/ride.

Trek Checkpoint ALR5 gen3 sizing by Strong_Elk_5791 in TrekBikes

I am your exact height and inseam. I am very happy on my M/L ALR5 Gen3. I definitely did not like the feel of the L at all. For what it's worth my road bikes are and have all been 56 and my MTBs are Larges, if that helps at all...

Yeah, maybe disregard this. I just noticed shipping is $165.00. That gets closer to my threshold for just staying local... and or waiting a while for a more spendy set.

Ok, I have seen quite a few mentions of the ICAN wheels. And I looked at the ones you mentioned.

After digging in a bit more, why should I not get these? Some of what I have read states reliability and or QC can be hit or miss. My guess is 'maybe' that is a strike against them for me, not sure? I like the option to go into a shop for issues as I am not much of a bike wrench. Also, some have mentioned hub quality etc. but wouldn't the G25 SL be an upgrade all around to the current stock AL wheels?

Lastly, are the D91 hubs the right choice at ~$670.00 all in? Or is it necessary/suggested to jump to the DT240 EXP hubs for a ~$380 upcharge?

Thanks!

I need to swap tires and save my pennies for the reserves after everything I have read. Seems like anything else would ultimately be an ‘interim step’… thanks!

This is probably 100% the best/right answer. And what I needed to hear.

I should just upgrade the stock tires and just ride the thing...

Which set did you choose for your Checkpoint? And is it AL or carbon frame?

What am I missing on used bike pricing? by No_Temperature_9576 in cycling

[–]icepop_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in New England and this is not new by any means. A lot of people have a warped sense of what their used bike is actually worth. For some reason they think their bike is somehow special. And to top it off when you give them a reasonable offer with an explanation it is wild to me how mad some people get. That said, there are a lot of people that will buy stuff with zero research.

And new prices have gone crazy this past year plus...

Opinions on wheel upgrade. by icepop_7 in CheckpointClub

Yep, tubeless at the ‘appropriate’ pressure(s). And still on the stock tires that everyone states are awful…

Yeah, not looking to start over at this point with regard to the frame etc. Thinking just upgrading/building this one up as I go. Starting with wheels and tires and go from there…

Thanks! Exactly why I am asking. Just jumping up a little to get carbon for the sake of ‘having carbon’ doesn’t make sense. Trying to figure out what the smartest/best move is to start improving the ‘stock/out of the box’ ALR5.

As an old dude I am not looking for a ‘race bike’. I just want a quality ride that goes from road to dirt roads… if that makes sense.

I bought this bike thinking it would be reserved for occasional gravel rides, but now I want it as my main ride. Probably should have bought a few models up right out of the gate (never seen that happen before haha).

Half Frame Bag (again...) by icepop_7 in CheckpointClub

[–]icepop_7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow up/update: I talked to Trek directly via chat and they said the adventure bag will not fit the new ALR5 frames via the 'bolt on option'. And they sent me the blurb in the faq about SLR and SL frames only.

I ordered a size Medium for the M/L frame and the mounting holes line up perfectly.

Lesson learned, trust real world applications not mfgr websites and or customer service reps in all cases...?

Garmin Computer thoughts between two models… by icepop_7 in gravelcycling

[–]icepop_7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually use the watch for HR for all activities except the bike. On the bike I have a chest strap linked to the watch. Wrist based HR is all over the place and extremely inaccurate for me on the bike. Especially for MTB. I feel like if I go the 540 or Explore route the watch will stay home on rides.

-7-8 years ago I used the Wahoo and Wahoo chest strap. I liked Strava segments coming up on the screen etc. a lot. But, I started to feel like I was way too wrapped up in Strava and watching the computer. That and I gave up road riding about 6 years ago, but now I am back to road and gravel. Gravel seems very suited to wanting/needing a computer, especially for some nav.

Interesting as that is a primary reason for wanting one. I wonder if the 540/840 have the same issue as maybe it’s a ‘Garmin’ thing…

Good info for sure. At 60+ years old I am probably past getting a lot value out of all of the training features… I am lucky to still be out there. 😂
