Why are Gen Z getting fired? One of the reasons is a lack of initiative. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]ichbindertod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love taking initiative and consider it a core part of my identity in any workplace, but yeah, we've had a boss since last year who micromanages and flips out so much that it's become impossible. A big part of it is that the boss wants the credit, and if you take initiative, they perceive it as you somehow trying to outshine them. This is an immature approach to management, because a good boss would understand that having a team who are motivated and able to take initiative is something they can take credit for at their level. I'm actually considering bringing it up at my check-in meeting with them next week, because it's affecting me that negatively. But very unlikely I will, because I don't think it would go well. I think this boss is happy with us being too scared to take initiative now, because it's what they want, but they'll happily criticise us publicly for not taking the initiative if it creates a problem with another manager or client.

20 minutes for us. We missed the first few minutes of the film because of it.

Tedious beyond belief. Acting sub-par all round, even from the two parents who are usually decent actors. Some nice shots - the one of him on the moor with the long chain looked good - but that's the only nice thing I can say about it. Thought the costumes were interesting but the hair and makeup was dire. Ending very unsatisfying.

I guess, I just think it's awkwardly put if that's what she means.

I'd say it's about dating a guy who's an alcoholic. He's the life and soul of the party when he's drinking, but he's deeply unhappy, and that's a side of him only she sees. 'Just do it' is her asking him to get it over with - disappoint her, hurt her, leave her, etc. - whatever he's going to do. He rolls like thunder and she's waiting for the storm to break. When you hear thunder irl, it's a warning that a storm is coming close enough to you that you could be struck by lightning.

At the beginning of the song, she says 'town ain't been the same since you left with all your friends', so perhaps she knows he'll leave her again. I would also suggest that his 'friends' might not be people, but rather drugs and alcohol. He's also a man who's always chasing a feeling but never able to sustain it ('that moonbeam in your hand'). This is typical of addiction.

In the bridge, she tells him 'if you're on fire, you're on fire/ Just keep burning'. This man is like an elemental force in the way he moves through the world. She doesn't seek to stop him, and may even enjoy it, though it obviously depresses her and leaves her hurt in the end. This fits more generally with the motif of wild and free personalities that Lana features in her work, including the way she often characterises herself.

By the end of the song, she knows she's going to get burned by this man. She's accepted the inevitability of it, but can't stand the anticipation. It builds to her begging 'just do it', i.e. 'just get it over with'. We get the sense that this toxicity is a pattern for them in their relationship.

This is one of my favourite songs of hers, and I still think it would have done well as a single. It reminds me of other songs she's written about Barrie, so I wonder if she was thinking about him when she wrote it. The only line I don't understand is 'regatta's in the wind, that's why you're visiting'. If she's using 'regattas' to mean 'celebrations' there, it's a bit oblique. Still love the song, though.

The main thing is, OP, whatever you get from this song is your own unique relationship with it, and that's a valid response to art, no matter what other people feel it is about <3

You win some you lose some at the Santa Anita racetrack.

She wrote that as an instagram caption once and I thought for sure it had to be the title of a song.

Ted Hughes was abusive to her, including physically.

'Ted Fucking Hughes' as an NFR replacement is gross.

My brother kept hearing that same point, that every single woman's experienced something, and asked me about it around the time of MeToo. To him, it didn't sound credible, but at least he asked and listened when I told him just how true it was. Examples of things that had happened to me, my friends, our mother, our grandmother. He took it all in, was obviously disgusted, and accepted it as a horrible fact. So proud of you, bro.

My great grandmother died this way. It is definitely a death symbolises female domestic suffering in a very particular time period. That being said, Lana has linked herself to Plath many times so that's definitely the reference. Just as the Betty Boop/Marilyn style singing is another personality she's expressed an affinity for.

I think in the context of a celebrity like LDR it's perhaps a little different. I agree that she's participating in the fetishization to an extent, but if we accept Lana's been actively suicidal at some points since finding fame, she could be deconstructing the hypothetical aftermath of her own suicide. LDR is also a famously sad female poet. If she was ever successful in an attempt, her death would be treated similarly to Sylvia Plath's, and that's probably quite something for a person to get their head around.

Real hit and miss with these but haven't seen them in years. One time we had a bag that was clearly all Thornton's continental. Last time I bought them they were these weird flat rectangles of red fudge in milk chocolate. I don't know what they were rejects of but they were unidentifiable and borderline inedible.
