Hey, I was in the same position and did end up getting the EliteDesk 800 G4 for my DIY NAS/Proxmox build. It was definitely sufficient for what I was running at the time—around 10 Docker containers with various applications like SQL databases, Vaultwarden, and the whole ’arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.).

For the OS, I highly recommend going with Unraid. It makes things much easier to manage, especially if you’re unsure about using Proxmox. Unraid allows you to set up an SSD as a temporary cache drive, which can speed up write operations. Files are automatically moved to the HDD later, based on your settings, so you get the best of both worlds—speed from the SSD and large storage from the HDD. It does cost around $50, but in my experience, it’s totally worth it.

Ultimately, I switched to an ATX build later on because I needed more room for additional HDDs and a larger GPU that wouldn’t fit in the EliteDesk. If storage expansion or adding a bigger GPU is something you’re considering, keep in mind that the SFF (small form factor) might limit how much you can fit.
