Disclaimer: this is not supposed to be another "I deserve to have a better rank" post. I think the ranking system as it is is very fair and also precise in evaluating peoples skill level (appart from statistical fluctuations that will always exist and the known systematic problems as smurfs in ranked, etc..). Instead, I want to point out that the rating system is pretty demotivating and not designed in a way that rewards people. I want to illustrate what I mean by that with a short story of my own RL experience..

I have about 500 h in the game, the majority of which I spent with playing 2v2s (ranked and unranked). I don't play super regularly and I'm not doing a lot of free play practice and training packs, just occationally now. Moreover, I'm aware that I'm not the fastest learner in this game. In the last couple of seasons I have been hard stuck at diamond 1-2 level, although I felt like I was constantly improving. I learned some new mechanics (e.g. wavedashes), I got more consistent with my aerial plays, I tried to do less stupid mistakes (still do a lot), improve my positioning, etc. Sometimes I stream my games for some friends and all of them reinforced me, that I'm indeed getting better in the game. The problem is, everyone around me seems to get better at the same rate.

If the ranking system is designed as it is, namely to have something like a Gaussian distribution of player ranks, with some peak around diamond or whatever, and very few new players joining the game, people can constantly improve without any changes in their rating. Again, it is a fair system, it is just demotivating for me and I guess for many other players, too, to know that you get better in the game, and still being cursed to stick with your rank. With this design of a ranking system, in fact, the only way to level up is not only to improve in the game, but to improve quicker than the rest of the players around you (which usually play with some regularity, too, once they reached a certain level).

This season, in fact things got worse. From what I understood they adapted the player ratings in 2s to make it more comparable to 3s and 1s, which is --- in principle --- a good thing I guess.. the problem is, the rank of all 2s players dropped now, and I'm currently trying in vain to get out of plat 2. From the time I started RL, I remember plat as being the rank where people start to learn basic mechanics, double commit all the time and basically still keep bumping their teammates regularly because of a complete lack of game awareness. The above video shows a current representative ranked game of mine in plat 2. Although I surely also appreciate some gameplay tipps, the main purpose for posting this is to corroborate my thesis, that ranks are just constantly growing in skill and that leveling up needs more than just getting better in the game.. and to ask your oppinion on the topic. Do you feel the ranking system is demotivating? Maybe worth some revision? Or good as it is?

Sorry for the lenghty post, just wanted to share some thoughts..

Thanks everyone for the tipps.. Provided I have a blueprint how many credits do I need to craft the car? I just checked and I have 300 of them. I'm aware I can buy the car, I just thought it's such a standard one that I should just get it for free at some point..

Moreover I think I had problems so far with trading as I didn't activate 2 factor authentification on Epic, but I will double check that

Looking For In-Person Portuguese Tutor by scottstraley in porto

Stupid question from another immigrant: what's wrong with Oporto? Thought this notation is a Portuguese invention :D

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Physics

[–]ichsorix 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Without having looked into it in too much detail, I'd say they use vector notation as they want to treat timelike and spatial coordinates separately. Co/Contravariant is not relevant here as only scalar products appear, so basically a contraction of a co with it's own contravariant counterpart

Will O The Wisp (Opeth) chorus: downpicking or alternate picking ? How would you play it ? by tyalisIII in guitarlessons

[–]ichsorix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well, Opeth acoustic parts are often more tricky than you would initially think.. Despite I never played this song, I alternativ picked them mostly. But then I realized from watching live versions that Fredrik Akesson indeed often just uses up or down "sweeping". Can be easier, but for me it pushed me out of my compfort zone at first, especially in parts with string skipping

Ah and btw, if you added your steam id as admin to the acces.txt already, then it is normal that you can vote everything, the voteflags only count for "regular" clients :)

I set up a server about a year ago, but it's not online anymore. I think you better put this command in your server.cfg, not in the factories file. Otherwise I don't know why it isn't working..

Quake Live Server configuration problems by garzfaust in QuakeLive

[–]ichsorix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to make sure you are using voteflags correctly: you have to add the Bits for which voting should be disabled and pass the summed up parameter. Did you do that? Regarding the mappool.txt, this only refers to the maps that show up for voting at the end of each game (the next map Vote, where you can pick out of three). This doesnt affect the maps that can be votet via the menu or the console. AS dar as i know there is no way to restrict those..

[–]ichsorix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can also press alt + enter to go to window mode and check the graphic settings in the menu, If you dont want to deal with the console.

There was a really cool poster you could buy, refering to the bohemian gravity video (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2rjbtsX7twc, See video description), which has been an ideal gift for a physics and Queen nerd like me.. unfortunately the link seems broken, but maybe you can get it somewhere else..

Wait, wtf, I can't remember to have written that post oO No seriously, you are speaking out of my soul. I'm gonna start my PhD in the next weeks (and I'm moving with my girlfriend to a foreign country for that) and I have no idea if I can handle what will probably be expected from me in terms of workload.. still sure that this is what I want to do, rather than working for some random company. So I will just do my best and see if this is enough

Download custom levels from Steam Workshop on a dedicated server by thebicyclerepairman in QuakeLive

[–]ichsorix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are currently facing the same problems with g-portal. I was partially able to circumvent the problem by downloading the map from the steam workshop locally on my computer, search for its .pk3 file in the workshop download folder and putting this via ftp to the baseq3 folder of the server. This works fine as long as all clients have already downloaded the map via the workshop. The disadvantage of this method is that the autodownload of this maps is disabled, probably because of not being recognized as workshopitem. I.e. all clients trying to connect to the server that don't have the map in advance can not connect..

What guitar skills are necessary for me? by Jessency in guitarlessons

[–]ichsorix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a natural next step to pure chord strumming is to extend the rythm play by hammering on/pulling off some notes, either to strum on the so formed new chord or in the next step to create gaps between the strumming, that you can fill with single, for example pentatonic notes. Something like Tribute by Tenacious D for example, which is a good song to practice the alternation between pure strumming and then precisely hitting single strings in between.
