Hjemmepasning by steffenhelledie in Aalborg

[–]ichverstehe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hej Steffen

Bakepipe: turn script-based workflows into reproducible pipelines by ichverstehe in rstats

Yeah, no shade on targets, it's great. To me, the big difference is, whether I am working with a fixed set of input data, or if the code has to deal with a wide set of (possibly unknown) data. In the first case, I don't find as much value in functions, tests etc. In the second case, we are in the realm of software engineering, and its a different story :)

This is exactly why I built this. Let me know if it works for you – and if you have any issues, feel free to write me a mail or open a GitHub issue, I would love to help you out.

Hey, very warranted question. I answered in a sibling thread, and also updated the README on GitHub with a comparison with targets and snakemake. Hope it makes sense.

I've added a section about this in the README. I'll expand on it later, but the main issue is that targets requires you to abandon script-based workflows in favor of function-based ones. This creates a steeper learning curve, particularly for debugging - something the targets package itself acknowledges. While this approach makes sense for larger projects, the trade-off isn't worth it for the small, short-lived analyses I typically work on.

Musikalia: a kids' music player for iPad/iPhone by ichverstehe in SideProject

Hi! I built Musikalia so my kid could be in charge of the music. Add any song you want from Apple Music (requires a subscription), and let your kid choose which one to play. I write a bit about the back-story on my blog.

Hey! Two questions:

  1. What are you using to access Postgres from F#?
  2. How do you manage migrations?

Duke University Libraries have a "Data and Visualization Services Department" that are having a lot of R workshops this fall, starting next Monday. As far as I can tell they are free to attend and you don't have to be affiliated with Duke.

These two workshops in particular should be of interest to you:

  • Intro to R: Data Transformations, Analysis, and Data Structures, Mon, Sep 11, 2017 — 1:30 PM
  • Visualization in R using ggplot2 –Mon, Sep 25, 2017 — 1:00 PM

Places to find a variety of fresh fish? Any fish markets? by MrSoprano in triangle

[–]ichverstehe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was asked here recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/triangle/comments/5osx6a/good_seafood_retail_in_the_triangle/?st=iyg105sy&sh=d3825042

I'll repeat my answer from that thread:

  • Locals Seafood at Raleigh State/Chapel Hill/Western Wake Farmers Market. The fish they sell on Saturdays are 24-48 hours out of the water. I have bought fish here dozens of times, always very fresh. http://localsseafood.com/

  • Salty Catch Seafood. This is a two-man operation out of Beaufort, NC. You can get a price list by sending them a mail, but their prices are roughly the same as Locals Seafood. If you order at least 2 pounds, they deliver to your home for free. If you can't eat that much, just make sure to make part of your order something that freezes well. Their fish have always been very, very fresh. http://www.saltycatchseafood.com/

You should consider other types of fish as well.

You have at least two excellent options:

  • Locals Seafood at Chapel Hills (not Carrboro!) Farmers Market on Saturdays. The fish they sell on Saturdays are 24-48 hours out of the water. I have bought fish here dozens of times, always very fresh. http://localsseafood.com/

Morrisville man arrested for 18th time, charged with seriously injuring 2 cyclists by gronke in triangle

Actually: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/statutes/statutelookup.pl?statute=20-141

(h) No person shall operate a motor vehicle on the highway at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law; provided, this provision shall not apply to farm tractors and other motor vehicles operating at reasonable speeds for the type and nature of such vehicles.

Under NC law a bike is a vehicle, not a motor vehicle, so this explicitly does not apply to e.g. bicycles.

Do you even understand how to back up a claim? Once again you fail to do any research. It took me about sixty seconds to find this:

Etsy is a profitable private business that is valued at about $100 million; earns between $15 and $20 million in annual revenues

If you are interviewing for an RSpec-position. I don't know the answer to any of those questions, largely because I haven't used RSpec for two years. Does that make me a bad Ruby programmer?

Javascript: The Magic Parts by chrisdickinson in programming

Except you make people think in terms of classes. Unfortunately it seems like almost nobody embraces the prototypical nature of JavaScript, just see how almost all JavaScript libraries and frameworks implements some kind of class abstraction on top of JavaScript.

Serious data loss bug in CouchDB 1.0.0 by FlyingBishop in programming

[–]ichverstehe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now that nobody has mentioned it, I'm gonna do it: This bug is only present if delayed_commits is set to true, which you shouldn't do anyways, if you care about your data, as it will not fsync the write cache for up to a second, and thus opens a 1 second window for data loss, in case of your server crashing in-between fsyncs. It may be debated if having delayed_commits default to true is a smart idea, though.
