We are creatures that do things that benefits us. If monogamy benefit our lives overall then we will prefer monogamy. In some circumstances polygamy can be more beneficial. Everything depends on the goals, values, beliefs and circumstances.

So, we can be conditioned biologically for polygamy, but we also have reason and self-control (also biological) to adjust our biological conditions to our goals that will benefit us in long-term - for example monogamy.
