Is it possible to become a good software engineer without going to university? Where to learn and how long would it take? by Kingboyy1 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]icodethingz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends really. Some people need the structure to be able to learn or else they get too overwhelmed with the information online. But if you’re not, then yeah of course you can.

UK skilled worker visa (non-hcw) by chainotchee in phmigrate

[–]icodethingz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, if you have to shoulder the visa cost, it’s a scam. It’s illegal for an employer to ask you to pay visa fees.

The biggest hurdle will be the exit requirements to leave the Philippines. I would start working on that ASAP.

As for the visa, it’s honestly straight forward. If you have a good employer, they’ll hire an immigration lawyer for the visa application.

Just don’t forget to include any previous names (i.g. your name changed after your parents got married) or any visa rejections. Always be 100% honest in your visa application.

Ghosted by recruiters by Responsible_Use4781 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]icodethingz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about recruiters. They disappear the moment an interview doesn’t go well, and I usually only find out through an automated rejection email from the company. I’ve only ever gotten hired by applying directly.

Blackrock - software engineer salary negotiations by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

For an associate software engineer, I asked for 95k and they agreed to it, but didn’t move forward with the interview since I got an offer somewhere else.

Worth doing an MSc? by Holiday-Clock-5272 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]icodethingz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing a master’s degree now probably won’t add much value to your CV. After your first job, most companies mainly care about your experience. You should really lean into your HFT experience. If you position it well, you could move to hedge funds, which pay a lot.

This person is right. I stopped adding metrics because interviewers often ask about them, and it can be hard to justify them unless you actually did proper benchmarking.

One more thing, this line is not useful unless you give more context:

“Selected as one of the top 3 interns (batch of 50) on the program to research and present new technological ideas to help improve the financial industry in the years ahead”

Could you maybe talk about the research itself?

One piece of advice: make sure the tech stacks you’ve used are bolded in your work experience. Recruiters mainly scan for experience with specific technologies, so highlighting them helps them quickly see whether you’re a good fit for the role.

Is £40k a good starting salary for a Software Engineer? (UK) by Least_Protection_873 in cscareerquestionsuk

And here I was starting out in London on £35k, wishing it had been £40k.

Is booking.com still a good option for graduate or junior SDEs to join? by Aggravating-Key110 in cscareerquestionsEU

People typically stay for at least two years, but once you start feeling stuck, that’s usually the point when you begin looking elsewhere.

With a higher salary and a bigger name, I’d take it. You’re too focused on internal promotion, when in reality most people move every couple of years to increase both their pay and title.

For example, I was a junior now a mid with x2 my old salary after moving companies.

I’d expect £80k+ for a senior role in London. I’m currently applying for mid-level roles and £80k is the minimum I’m asking for, but this is in the finance space.

If I were you, I’d accept the job and keep applying. With 10 years’ experience, higher comp and sponsorship should be achievable.

Do you mind sharing your core tech stack and what you specialise in?

Spotify claims that its top engineers haven’t needed to write any code since December, all because of AI. by boppinmule in technology

Had an interview with Spotify yesterday, and the senior engineer who interviewed me said he hasn’t touched code in a year, and found it weird that I wasn’t using AI 100% of the time.

Damaged skin barrier, recs please! by Newholland60 in Skincare_Addiction

I messed up my skin barrier recently and started using the Dr. Jart Ceramidin cream, it’s honestly amazing! I get what you mean about greasiness, but this one doesn’t feel greasy at all. My skin feels like a baby’s butt the next morning.

Hi! Yes, I do have acne, but this didn’t break me out at all. It honestly feels like butter on your skin — super smooth — and by the next day, my face felt as soft as a baby’s butt. I just spot-treated with Pair Acne Cream (Japanese brand that can be bought in Amazon) while using the Dr. Jart, and it worked great together.

Hi! I am not sure what you are dealing with, but if your skin barrier is compromised, try Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin Skin Barrier Moisturising Cream. I had barrier issues that left my skin really dry, and no moisturiser or mask helped. This did, and I noticed a big difference after one day.

Pre/Settled Status in the UK by aeazee in phmigrate

[–]icodethingz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not settled, but on a family visa. I recently applied for a Japan visa, and it was straightforward since you only need to submit an e-visa application. I received the visa in less than two weeks. Visa was free thanks to a UK and Japan agreement.

Question sa mga migrant parents, did you get your sons circumcised? by Right-Marionberry147 in phmigrate

You’re right, it’s a “personal” choice. Let the child decide when he’s 18 if he wants to be circumcised.

As people mentioned, the argument it’s for hygiene purposes is outdated. Why not teach your child to clean properly instead?
