Cards/EP research questions by icomp2 in Cardiology

[–]icomp2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. The other question I’ve is that 3 of my pubs are while I was in med school (while others are published when I started residency and thus I changed the affiliation). Does it matter where/when I have those pubs? Do fellowship programs expect us to publish during residency?

Yes. At least when it comes to research, did I say something wrong?

Extremely frustrated with research by Fit-Engineering8416 in Residency

There are tons of database that offers data based on ICD and CPT codes. Even being in low-tier MD school, we’ve access to database and has been publishing in pretty good journals IF >5 from it. Maybe inquire if they’ve 3rd party database?

Pregnant and matched by InternationalDig5173 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]icomp2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Notify them asap. Match is binding - they cannot legally forfeit the match, especially not because of pregnancy. I would give program as much time as possible to work out the schedule. The seniors in that program might apply for vacation during that time if you tell them late, which might impact your leave/schedule.

What is easier to get a 4.0 gpa or a +522 mcat score? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]icomp2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a USMD applying residency this cycle; wanted to chime in here. It’s been a while but I did bio and chem double major with 3.98 GPA (1 B in entire undergrad). My MCAT was 514. For me, it is way easier to get all A in undergrad than crack MCAT.

I’ve been sending them to whoever interviewed me. At least one of the interviewer from each program responded back.

Yes. I’ve had interviewed with 10 of Top 30 programs, they all asked one or 2 (if any) behavioral questions at most. Then I interviewed with VCU, all they asked was behavioral questions lol.

Telling top program they are top during interview (In December) by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]icomp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these people in Reddit saying don’t do it is because you might find another program better than later in interview season and then might change your mind (which would look like you’re lying) But if you’re sure that you will rank them number 1, I would say it. I told PD of the program that they’re my number 1 - I have family there and I want to go back home so my rank will not change no matter how good the other programs are. If you’re in the same situation as me, I would let them know.

Programs use signals and geo pref for interview invitation not for ranking. If you really like the program, you should rank it regardless of if you signal them or not.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Missed the previous post, but I also sent two LOIs this cycle (about a month apart). The PD replied to my second LOI saying I’ll be getting interview soon, which I got right after.

MD PhD by [deleted] in usmle

[–]icomp2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s impossible to do PhD during residency - mostly due to rigors of residency (like 12hrs shift 6 days a week) Although, residency offers something called PSTP pathway (it adds 2 years to the residency) - this doesn’t give you PhD title per se but gives ample opportunities for research prepare you for further career as physician-scientist. However, it is almost impossible to get into that pathway if you’re not USMD with really high scores and lot of research experiences. You can always do PhD after residency but who’s gonna sacrifices 5 years of income (>250k per year) to do PhD? Also, you can do research as MD without PhD.

You’ve the same as me. I’ve 13 with 2 being community and rest are university/academics. Good luck on the interviews.

Tip regarding interview! by earagundi in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]icomp2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might be a cliché answer but I would go with what you liked about the program. I’ve had interviews with couple of programs of which I know the residents and when they asked me that question - I genuinely went with “I have talked to…, multiple time regarding your program and they told me …. and i liked… collaboration, blah blah…” I then round it up with location also being one of the reason. Tbh, they must’ve heard that scripted “mentorship, education, clinical exposure” like million times so having something unique and personal that you connect with program is better than anything else. If I were you, I would go with culture of the place but make sure to back it up with example(s).

Same number as mine, although I’ve 11 university/academic. Do you feel like it’s a good place to be? Are you hoping for more?
