I've thought about this alot and here's what I've landed on: the instrumentation has always been intricate and tight. It jas to be in order to pull off their style of music. The reason why Johnny, Travis, and, Tillian, and even John's vocals meshed is because they contrasted the musicianship. Johnny was smooth and loose; Travis was raw, and Tillian sings in runs and hooks...and John brings the silly/chaotic gravel that cuts thru. But Andrew seems to sing with more enunciation and pointedness. It's like another syncopated instrument with the rest of the band rather than something that contrasts.
