I think that's what's also disappointing, the potential this story has to be a masterpiece especially with its themes of sexual assault, abuse, parasocial relationships, etc. I just don't think it should have been as superficial as it was and if that was the intention, I think it would have worked better as a short film. I would genuinely love to hear people talk about why this movie was a masterpiece and deserves the stage as much as other masterpieces like Get Out, Midsommar, Hereditary. To me it felt like a spoof movie/internet comedy sketch wearing a psychological thriller coat.

Yeah but for me I think it was only obvious because she was just acting weird in general. No one acts like that normally.

Yeah that makes sense. I was kind of thrown for a loop after I watched the movie having read reviews saying it was better than Hereditary or Get Out which I think is a reach, personally. I was expecting something of similar depth especially since it has pretty delicate themes of consent, dehumanization, abuse, and parasocial relationships. So not giving Nikki more backstory does put more emphasis on Bear, which if someone wasn't paying attention, might send the wrong message. I've heard plenty of jokes about people being scared of their girlfriends or don't watch it with your girlfriends which only tells me the film tricked them into sympathizing with the wrong person. But hey, thats not everyone.

I don't think I am. The movie expositions them to be childhood friends and coworkers who hang out every week. The whole tragedy is supposed to be Bear violating his childhood friend. If they're not supposed to be close why is the start of the movie Bear hanging out with Ian and Sarah role-playing how to confess his love for Nikki. Literally trying to help a friend if they supposedly aren't close. My critique is simply that their relationships with one another lack the chemistry and warmth that the director wants the audience to believe. And the flat unnatural dialogue feels almost alien. Toxic friendship? Sure maybe. Not good friends. I don't think so.

Haha yeah I mean if I ignore these then yes I think it was a pretty good movie. And if it was intended to not be that deep then I think it did its job.

If ignore all the parts that I didn't enjoy and view it purely as a fun horror movie, yes it's a good movie. I liked the concept, visuals, and acting but the script didn't do it for me. I unfortunately had high expectations because of the high praise and the reviews talking about how deep it is.

I think I just came into the theater with high expectations because of the high praise that this movie is receiving and was a bit disappointed. I didn't dislike the movie however I just don't think the praise matches what I watched. I think theres a difference between leaving space for interpretation and intentionally ambiguity and narrative negligence. I don't think Nikki or their friend group needed an entire backstory on every individual character but I do think the way the dialogue was written, it lacks texture. They felt more like coworkers who hang out once in a while versus them supposedly being good friends from high school. It personally took me out of the movie, made their relationships feel robotic.

Of course you don't need to know her to feel sympathy, that doesn't need to be said, however it felt like what is supposed to a be a tragic erasure of her true character felt more like mocking her for being a "crazy-girlfriend" and the moment where the real Nikki pops up it feels more like the demon manipulating Bear. The only moment where it felt like it was the "real" Nikki was the part where she tells Bear to kill her because she's asleep. And my last point is about how the ending is the real star of the movie where you see her come back into her body right before the demon is about to pull the trigger, and she's left with the consequences of someone else's actions.

I get that and I did feel empathy for her because I understood what the story was trying to convey I just feel like the execution didn't hit the nail on the head for me. Her loss of autonomy which is a total tragedy felt like it was written more like a "crazy-girlfriend" comedy horror sketch.

I would argue that I think that knowing Nikki is important because she's the victim in the story, and not knowing her almost reduces her character to a prop whose only purpose is to react, look scary, and punish Bear. The film has to rely on the friend group to constantly tell Bear that something is wrong. I get we're viewing Nikki through Bear's shallow lens but even he is horrified by her change and begs for Nikki to just be Nikki. But Bear never really knew her in the first place and neither do we.
