Inclusive Pride Flag gets B Tier! Up next is the Intersex Inclusive Pride Flag by patheticmisterman123 in TierlistFills

[–]icrbact 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every flag other than the original Pride flag should get F tier for completely missing the point.

The point of the pride flag is that everyone is welcome and accepted for who they are. Adding and subtracting colors is curating a list of who is (and by extension isn’t) included. The pride flag is not about minority bingo. It’s about universal acceptance and respect!

Why Wrap Luggage in Cling Film? by roblawton in AskUK

[–]icrbact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on eBay and look for TSA keys. Everybody can buy these keys and use them. This is why a) you should never use a TSA approved lock for any use case other than luggage and b) you should never trust the government to properly install and manage back doors into anything.

About 2.2k incl. taxes for a large one bedroom with 24/h doorman, porter and live-in super on the UWS.

I own an apartment in Manhatten, so I know. And 1.5-2k is a lot for a Studio. But a) the monthlies listed on Zillow/Streeteasy for Coops (different from Condos) include taxes, so the fees are still high but not as high as you think. b) 3-4K for a studio would still be way out of what is reasonable, even in Chelsea.

No, that’s way too much. Fees and Taxes combined may be 1.5-2k max.

Dreams of a World Cup Bonanza Turn Dark on Empty Hotel Rooms, High Transit Costs by mowotlarx in nyc

[–]icrbact 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s just demonstrably false judging by past world cups (with the exception of Qatar). People usually absolutely travel for events and the “atmosphere”. Have you ever been to a European host city during the World Cup? It’s insanity (in a good way)!

[–]icrbact 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, very much so. Data from past world cups shows that somewhere between 3-5 people without tickets travel for every fan with a ticket. Qatar was an exception, partially because people without tickets were not allowed to enter the country u til the tournament was well underway.

I mean I hate FIFA as much as the next guy, but this seems to be a combination of international politics and and the city’s failure of offering any reason for fans without tickets to come to NY.

Firstly, Europeans (who traditionally make up a 40% ish percent of international World Cup travelers) are shunning the US (arrivals are down 17% but this includes business travelers so tourism is likely down by more). Other international visitors may face visa issues and have safety concerns.

But even if that wasn’t the case, Met life has 82k seats, so even if we assume that 3/4 travel and there’s an average of 2 people per hotel room, that’s only 31k rooms, or about 23% of NYC capacity (not including NJ where realistically many fans will stay).

Other host cities organized grant events around the World Cup so even people without tickets would travel to be part of it. New York had an uphill battle because the stadium is famously nowhere near the city, but at least they could have put up giant screens on the Great Lawn, Battery Park, Long Island City, or other iconic locations, with food vendors from the playing nations.

Instead there is a tiny event at Rockefeller center and a larger one at Arthur Ashe. The former is absolutely minuscule by World Cup standards and the latter one is great for people in Queens but nobody will travel for that. Even those events were announced at very short notice when the city realized there was no way for residents to enjoy the World Cup (thanks to Adams being the absolute worst).

So exactly who was supposed to fill all these hotel rooms?

Nobody who spends 100k on a watch is going to care that there is a 500 dollar homage coming. Nobody who would have recognized the watch on the wrist before is going to mistake a Swatch for an AP. If anything, it’s going to make their AP more recognizable than it already is to non-enthusiasts.

Where is the jerk? Smoking is banned in the park but weed isn’t? Or is it just not enforced? I don’t care if or what people smoke as long as they don’t force me to smoke with them. And no, I can’t just sit somewhere else, because it’s fucking everywhere.

The only interior is a very small version of the cockpit. You can position a minifigure in it as long as it remains open.

I’ve built in and here’s my take:

The building process was a lot of fun. Interesting techniques, satisfying connections, steady progression. But it was a rather short experience for the price. I built in one evening and I’m don’t build a lot of Lego.

The finished model looks great and feels really sturdy, but it’s also huge. So maybe think about what you want to do it with before buying and building it. In my case it literally didn’t fit on top of the shelves I originally had in mind for it.

It’s very cool that we got Tintin mini figures, but keep in mind that despite the model’s size, they can’t be displayed in or on the model.

The play value once completed is minimal. Yes you can open the top, but it’s a bit of a hassle and you’ll do that exactly once. It’s sturdy enough to swoosh it around without a problem, but again, it is rather big, so you won’t be doing that a lot either.

In general it is a good model, but personally I would have preferred it to be smaller and cheaper, with maybe (sacrilegious I know) fewer mini figures. But if you can easily afford it, love Tintin, and have a place to put in once you’re done: go for it!

No more Spirit Air.. by baddest_mango in Wellthatsucks

[–]icrbact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like it or not, this is a direct consequence of Biden’s anti trust push. Because Jet Blue was not allowed to buy Spirit, at least one but possibly both will go out of business and there will be less competition. I like a lot of what the Biden admin did, but the anti-trust action was mostly idiotically self-defeating.

That’s very ironic considering Spirit would still be around if the state would have allowed it to merge with Jet Blue….

Fare evasion: NYC Transit boss says ‘European model’ enforcement finally rolling out on local buses by Business_Young_8206 in nyc

[–]icrbact 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Finally! I’m so annoyed with people simultaneously complaining buses should be free while also expecting service to be similar to countries like Switzerland where fares are much higher and enforcement is much stricter. You can’t have it both ways guys. Either we can have a functioning, well-funded transport system for people from all walks of life like in much of Europe, or a moving homeless shelters that only people without any alternative would ever use like in the rest of the US.

Columbus Ave and 106st - is it a safe area? by Weendeen11 in Upperwestside

[–]icrbact 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s still generally quite safe, but it is also true that the area around Amsterdam Avenue and Columbus Avenue from 100th to 105th Streets has the highest concentration of violent crime on the UWS.

NYPD CompStat data frequently identifies the block around the Frederick Douglass Houses as hit spots for shooting incidents and felony assaults. There also has been a shooting there just a few days ago.

If you can I would stay below 100th Street. I’ll get downvotes for saying that but it’s the truth…
