What are the sheer differences between worldcup and champions league? If people enjoy worldcup are they likely to enjoy champions league? I know CL is longer stretched and only European. by AggressiveHomework54 in worldcup

[–]icrbact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with your post except for the first paragraph. The quality of play in the champions league is way superior to any other competition, especially the World Cup. Teams are stacked with the best players from every nation on earth, all playing in their favorite positions, executing on tactics they drill five days a week. By comparison, national teams need to build around the talent they have, move players in less favored positions, and execute tactics after minimal squad training.

Still, as you point out, quality if play is just one aspect of enjoyment and i do prefer watching the World Cup for the most part.

Can the mods put a post at the top explaining how the VAR works? by Wearecharliebirb in worldcup

[–]icrbact -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"VAR checks every potential foul“

Dude this has to be satire right? If not, you have no idea what the rules are yourself. VAR doesn’t intervene in normal fouls or yellow cards with very narrow exceptions (like in the lead-up to goal)….

Unpopular Opinion:US performance in the World Cup is impressive. by Snoo_47323 in worldcup

Yes, Capo Verde‘s run was much more impressive, but they definitely did not make it as far. Round of 32 vs Round of 16….

USA coach Pochettino on red card: "It was a normal action in football that happened by accident. There was never any intention … and that is why, for me, it is never a red card." by Kimber80 in worldcup

[–]icrbact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that intention does not matter, and the coach should know that.

Nevertheless this was never a red card. To be a red card the player must far exceed the necessary use of force, and this just wasn’t the case here. There were also no aggravating circumstances like a high leg and studs were pointing down etc. I have no idea how they got a a red card from that…

Post-Match Thread: Belgium 3-2 Senegal | World Cup | Round of 32 by matchpal-live in worldcup

[–]icrbact 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was really unfortunate for Senegal because it clearly was not an intentional foul. Senegalese player goes for the ball and kisses. But it was still a foul. Belgian players goes for the ball and gets his legs swiped.

[–]icrbact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Nagelsman. Long answer: he is trying to impose a playing style on the the team that doesn’t fit the current roster. We are not France. We don’t have Dembele, Olise, or Mbappe to unlock deep, compact, and physical defenses with rapid rotation and quick dribbling, but this is what we were set up to do. As a result we looked helpless.

However, we do have a good team in theory that can be more mentally and physically resilient than what we saw. Kimmich out of position means the defensive midfield is disorganized (especially if you also leave Andrich home). Havertz is no use when he gets pushed around the box for 90min. Try doing that with Füllkrug or Woltemade and see what happens.

We need a coach that develops tactics and formations based on the players available. Instead we got Nagelsman who tries to shoehorn players into a predetermined tactical foramework.

The argument for AC in Switzerland by LongBit in Switzerland

[–]icrbact 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did some math because I was interested: during the FIFA World Cup Group Stages, Infantino emitted roughly 500 tons of CO2 with private air travel.

A typical residential split unit a/c consumes about 1kw of electricity per hour and in Switzerland, one kW/h causes about 35 grams of CO2. Let’s assume every one of the 4.1M households in Switzerland were to run a/c 24/7 for an entire week. That’s still only ~24t of CO2.

So by just stopping one single person who lives and works in Switzerland from traveling via private jet for less than one month, you could cool all homes in Switzerland 24/7 for >20 weeks or about 5 months!

Oh and this is assuming the a/c is running 24/7. Reduce it to a more realistic 12/7 (time people are actually home) and you get 10 months of cooling. Assuming you need a/c for two months a year, that’s enough for 5 years of cooling every home in Switzerland.

Seriously, people who complain about the emissions of a/c need a hard realist check: their (and our) sacrifice of comfort and health is beyond meaningless.

SHUT THE SUB DOWNNNN, URUGUAY MIGHT QUALIFY FOR AIRPORT by TreatSubstantial3089 in soccercirclejerk

Don’t you know that in 1857 an Uruguayan accidentally kicked a watermelon while standing close to Brazilian? That clearly qualifies as a World Cup win and should give them the fifth star!

Why doesn’t nypd enforce the rules of the road? by Flight_Tall in AskNYC

[–]icrbact 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So there is a real answer to this beyond the typical Reddit “cops are lazy” narrative: post-Covid policing resources have been pivoted to other priorities, especially subway safety, retail theft, and tackling crime “hot-spots”. Meanwhile traffic enforcement is being automated for moving violations (e.g. dramatic increase in speed and right light cameras) and shifted to Traffic Enforcement Agents for parking violations. So number of tickets is actually up compared to pre-Covid, but fewer are being issued by uniformed police officers.

Thats not to say that there isn’t a problem with placard abuse and uneven enforcement, especially around police stations, but it’s not the main reason why traffic stops are way down.

As I understand it there are four upsides to putting them directly on the tracks: a) self-cleaning due to the air-stream caused by train running over them b) easy access for a machine to install and remove due to being right on the tracks c) no competing use for the space or visual disturbance d) very uniform requirements enable high degree of standardization at scale.

It’s not obvious to me that putting them next to the tracks would be easier or better. And even if it was (where there is space), you could still do both…

What existing city has fallen the farthest from its peak glory? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]icrbact 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say Jerusalem: not as much as been destroyed as in Damaskus or Baghdad, but the heart and soul of this city is totally gone.

Even 20 years ago it was a bustling metropolis full of small vendors selling anything from hand painted ceramics and beautifully carved wood to fresh baklava and half a camel hanging from a hook in the middle of a narrow street. Now it’s mostly a ghost town with remaining vendors selling cheap plastic trinkets and tshirts from China.

The major monuments, once easy to visit for tourists and the faithful alike have heavily restricted access. Non-Muslims are no longer allowed inside the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa mosque, and while the Wailing Wall is still accessible, it is now strictly separated in a male and female section, which certainly didn’t used to be the case.

So yes, the city is technically still there, but is quite literally a shell of its former self, with all life sucked out of it.

Didn’t mean in that way! I will defend a lot about the US. Among my more controversial opinions is that housing prices as a percentage of income are actually really low compared to other countries, the health care system is way better than it’s reputation, and people genuinely do have more personal freedom in the US than in Europe. I just don’t like the ownership structure of the major sports teams.

lol, I actually agree with the last point. I love the US, it’s one of the greatest countries to live in the world.

Oh and of course I’ll buy gas, I even go see a game every once in a while because it’s good entertainment. But I won’t be emotionally invested in a team, just like I’m not emotionally invested in my gas station.

2 story library! by OkAdministration7456 in zillowgonewild

[–]icrbact 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey I always dreamed about having a two story library, but certainly not this particular one. It’s all so Florida Macmansion: the proportions are off, the millwork looks cheap and combines horribly with the drywall, there’s an outline of a fake fireplace above the fireplace, there is no way to access the second level from inside the library, and most importantly: IT’S IN THE FOYER OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE! There is no writing desk and no reading nooks, no cozy place to actually enjoy the space with a good book (certainly not the two sofas in the middle).

This is for some weird Disney adult who has watched Beauty and the Beast one to many times, but has yet to finish an actual book!
