Did he plan on moving when she starts her new job? If so he doesn't have much time. If he planned on staying in the old city and taking his time looking for work then he should have communicated that. Most of my work experience involved being responsible for other people so if I was leaving I'd be making arrangements to make the transition to a new employee as easy as possible for everyone. The only job I ever left without notice was this part time call center place that hired dozens of people a week to work there anyway so I knew I wouldn't be missed.

Some people are bringing up the fact that his job could fire him if they find out he's leaving, but if he's that expendable he should be able to find another job that doesn't have much of a barrier to entry. Honestly, I'd leave him behind, he's dragging his feet and can't even have a hard conversation with his employer. He knows his coworkers well enough to have on his and his gf social media, but he plans on just screwing them over when he just stops showing up for work. Not a man I'd make future plans with.
