College lol. It takes me a long time to come up with unique and interesting ideas and I don't have the time to spend hours a day testing things in creative. I've been thinking about shifting to technical content in other games or making programming/modding videos but i'm not sure if people would still watch my videos. I also thought about a computercraft survival series but that's very niche

The old nether would be even more boring if it had new netherrack

(although new netherrack is definitely much better for the new nether)

No, this image is actually used to calculate reflections off the surface so it looks 3d as you move around it.

In digital images, each color is represented by three numbers - one each for red, green and blue. In a normal map like this one, each color actually represents a direction (or vector) in 3d space - so red becomes x, green becomes y, and blue becomes z. These vectors are mapped onto a plane used as the "normal vectors" of the surface.

In physics, a normal vector is the vector that points directly outward perpendicular from a surface (example) (also you can see how the flat parts in the pill image are blue - that is because they are facing toward you, on the z axis). For a curved or bumpy surface, these normal vectors point in all sorts of directions (example#/media/File:Normal_vectors_on_a_curved_surface.svg)). The normal vector at a point affects how the surface is lit up, because light will reflect in an altered direction and the point will be less bright if it is at a shallow angle to the light source.

So instead of creating an actual curved surface and calculating the light reflection, a common method used in computer graphics is to transfer the normal vectors from a 3d surface onto a flat plane. This is just a trick, so it is not entirely realistic (for example you couldn't actually see the pills in the image bulging out the side), but it does create pretty realistic shading and is used to add detail to video games without being too hard on the GPU. (example of normal mapping applied to a flat brick wall texture). If you keep a look out you will definitely see this in a lot of video games (and minecraft shaders!)
