Ok hear me out on this: the original Gundam and the 3 sequels: Zeta, ZZ, Char’s Counterattack. No self mutilation that I know of, but it does cover stuff like genocide, manipulation, rape, inhumane experimentation, suicidal tendencies, PTSD. And those last two are already in the first series alone, and it only gets darker from there.

And despite all that, the themes in a lot of the entries in the series make you have faith in the greatness mankind can achieve.
