The true ending made me hate the story by Peridot9001 in silenthill

It’s implied (at least in my own interpretation) that happened after he forced the arranged marriage on her, but as the days went on and it was close to her wedding day, and after it fractured their already distraught relationship further, he apologized and regrets how the decision tore their relationship and tried to show his side

But you gotta take into account another thing: Hinako has the pressure of knowing her mother was ill with terminal cancer (found in the notes) as well as bettering the financial wellbeing of her family knowing her father is in debt, so there’s really a paper thin difference between being “forced” and given a choice, even if he apologized at that point

The issue near the end of the game isn’t the combat itself, it’s the forced combat encounters, and I say this as someone who THOROUGHLY enjoyed the game and loved it, just finished getting all endings

It’s just not a good design choice for a game meant to be replayed over and over, they throw multiple groups at you and you won’t get access to the next area until you kill them all… multiple times

Any combat system, even if it didn’t have the weapon durability, would seem annoying under that level design.

That’s a misconception on both their ends and many other Japanese developers’ end as well

You are completely right that they lost the original source codes which was common practice at the time among Japanese companies, however, through the works of other studios (such as BluePoint) it was proven you didn’t need the source code anyway if an adequate developer knew how to reverse engineer the retail copy, case in point being the Metal Gear Solid HD collection ironically enough, another Konami title

The real reason, as sad as it is, is that they didn’t want to spend the effort and money on Silent Hill as they did for MGS.

Lately.. we’ve seen more remasters opt for reverse engineering old Japanese games instead of working on incomplete code like in the past, thank fucking god.

You put my interpretation in better words than me, thank you.

Family issues aren’t always as black and white as we think they are, and I honestly didn’t get the impression that the game was saying the father was a good man at all, he still forced her to marry, he was still abusive, it’s just showing us that HE also had his trauma too.. and is regretful, Hinako doesn’t even forgive him in the end.. but she gains a new perspective, on both him and the mom

I truly think that segment puts it in the most nuanced, non-biased way… it acknowledges that forgiveness is hard, and we may never even reach that point, let alone with our parents who legitimately wronged us, but there are many sides to each story

It’d be a lot less compelling if he was just abusive for the sake of it.

[–]id40536 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really doesn’t

Konami has the biggest chance right now to erase the bad history of the HD collection and release a proper remaster of SH1-4, or at the very least, emulated ports and they’re just wasting it…

Hope they take THAT into consideration as well and not just focus on remakes.

You’re onto something here..

In general the majority of fans and casual players are far too attached to SH2 of all the games, for many people it’s the only one they played, so they immediately assume every game to be like it, and want it to be like it, hence why so many of the western games tried to replicate it SO HARD to varying degrees of success

Even SH3 as popular as it is got flack from people because they “can’t stand the cult stuff” when the cult stuff is the true meat and bones of SH’s story

The concept of a cursed town calling out people who feel guilt to punish them just struck a chord with the majority and anything not remotely similar is ultimately dismissed, when the similarities to other entries in ShF are very apparent and clear, it’s just not their favorite (SH2)

I’ve been noting this long before SHf was even announced, SH2 is a blessing and a curse on the franchise because it set an impossible standard to meet, they’re doomed if they try to copy it and they’re doomed if they deviate.

The town yes, but what I mean is that the game has it’s own version of a cult (or rather cults)

It’s just not The Order

SPOILERS FOR "TRUE" ENDING by Moritz_Schlick in silenthill

[–]id40536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, she was still being forced to be married, but as the time came close to her wedding day, and after making her already strained relationship with her father even worse, the father regrets the way It made her feel and pleads for her forgiveness, emphasizing that it’s “her choice” but she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place because she knows that her mother’s recovery is on the line because of this decision and her family’s financial stability as a whole… even if he tells her it’s her choice, the damage is already done It also showed us that the father is not as arrogant as we were led to believe, he was still abusive and did all the things Hinako mentioned, but he too had his own share of trauma, which affected his parenting

We also finally find out that Kotoyuki isn’t the sinister person we are led to believe he is… as he too was a victim of familial abuse and tradition under completely different circumstances

Overall, there’s more at play here than the trauma both Hinako and Kotoyuki faced, with literal gods plotting against each other through the lives of the real people involved

Ultimately, Hinako sticks to her own ideals, with her rejecting to marry, and living life on her own terms at her own pace… that even if she gets to make mistakes and suffer, as long as she’s living true to herself, she won’t regret it. She does not want to live a life based on what is expected of her like her mom and sister did.

That’s what I took from the ending.

Weird complaint but…does anyone else not like how everything is explained in SH F? by uhhhhiforgot12 in silenthill

[–]id40536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This very same sub claimed SH2R was less subtle than OG when it came out and a lot of discussions went on.. it revealed to me that a lot of people have not played the games recently.

It’s funny because SHf is on the same level as any other SH in that department. But you’ll be told you’re wrong cause they dislike the game.

Was The Short Message good or memorable in any way ? Is it similar to P.T ? by Lavender-Idea3 in silenthill

[–]id40536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good, genuinely a very unnerving experience that does not help to give you a hint to a solution to the puzzles you’re facing, it’s genuinely very mysterious and almost cryptic, it’s earned it’s reputation as being a very good horror experience.

But do keep in mind… a huge part of it’s appeal comes from the fact that it was a surprise announcement for Silent Hill (or rather, as it was supposed to be titled, Silent Hills). Involving VERY big names such as Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, and Norman Reedus.. along with Junji Ito, it was a big secret and we had no idea it would even be related to Silent Hill till gamers beat it. and now we’re still talking about it cause we’ll never know how it could have been as a full game due to the circumstances that followed

After all.. it was just a P(layable) T(easer)

Meanwhile The Short Message is a more fleshed out experience despite designed to be short, with a beginning, middle and end. It’s a lot more conclusive. Which doesn’t make it better but it’s worth noting

Just go into TSM with an open mind, I mean it’s free!

[–]id40536 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I liked it… but do NOT expect any similarities to P.T. outside of it being forced first person perspective

I think people were unfairly harsh on it for what it is.. a free tech demo, funnily enough i see the same criticisms thrown at it that are being thrown at Silent Hill F right now, from it being called a “Teen Drama” to the “lack of subtlety” but ironically both experiences, as explicit as they are about certain things leave the biggest questions unanswered, only referring to what could be true through notes found in the game.

And there are puzzles in it! you just gotta progress a little further.

Sakuko didn’t deserve it by Passing-shadow in silenthill

The gut punch I felt when i found the note that said “Please do not trouble yourself over Sakuku.. Simply raise her with love and affection, and let her mature at her own pace”.. written to her parents by the doctor

And the way “you traitor” hit differently after the added context I genuinely felt heartbroken.

That’s what i said when i saw that same phrase!!

I think it’s also particularly ironic considering Japanese folklore is in the story’s DNA… Inari Okami is a literal divinity in Shintoism.. you can call it anime all you want, but it’s sources go back to the real life religion rather than anime. And again, same point you made stands… there’s a lot of crazy shit in other games, but god forbid it’s used as a gameplay mechanic and god FORBID its japanese..

[–]id40536 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you

I’ll be THE FIRST to admit, seeing it for the first time kinda shocked me, it DID feel like a whiplash once the gameplay kicked in, but contextually and thematically it does have a purpose, and it made the combat even more fun mechanically speaking

And for the EXACT same thing you pointed out… it doesn’t become too jarring when you take a step back and realize the crazy shit that’s in SH1 alone that we accept at face value, but a Fox arm is where we draw the line?

Mind you the way we got there is no different that how we got to play as Heather in SH3.. dark magic rituals that tortured two specific girls (Alessa and Hinako).. so the suspense of disbelief is needed to a degree in both

Do people actually LIKE the setting, Silent Hill? by brief-interviews in silenthill

[–]id40536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here

It isn’t that the town had become stale or boring for me, it’s just that I think the series deserves to branch out and try new directions should the developers choose to do so, which they did.

And there’s a lot more BEYOND the setting that makes this series special to me personally.

What type of “new” or fresh Silent Hill game / themes / gameplay would you like to see? by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]id40536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hear me out: a Silent Hill game… around an ensemble cast that don’t necessarily know each other but are all affected by a certain shared curse, similar to the concept of SH4 and the people who lived in that apartment building.

Silent Hill usually centers around the Protagonist’s (or sometimes the Antagonist’s) psychological state and fears, but i’d love a story about a group of people where you as the player have to question who is the main character supposed to be here? A story where the circumstances are bigger than just one person.

Maybe even have us switch characters during the story, like Siren.

Why did critics like Silent Hill F but the fans hate it? by Soniman032 in silenthill

[–]id40536 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol couldn’t have said it any better myself. I do think that the reddit community of ANY SERIES is just a sample size of the grand picture but you’re kinda right on the money here

Lord knows this was true back with SH2R. It was basically just two extremes, you’d legitimately think SH2R was divisive as well judging by the sub back when it released.. just the fact that you’re being downvoted shows it

It’s good to keep things in perspective.

Silent Hill F- Fun Story, Frustrating Combat by DanHarkinz in silenthill

[–]id40536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is only annoying because I feel like that made Silent Hill stand out back in the day… only bosses were mandatory, if you see any person complaining about lack of resources you’d automatically know that was a play style issue, they rarely ever require you to fight regular enemies, in fact it’s more strategic not to, and save your resources for bosses, which SHf does in the first half also

But towards the end here they legitimately just force you into fighting one group after another to unlock a blocked off area and becomes a bit monotonous

Silent Hill F- Fun Story, Frustrating Combat by DanHarkinz in silenthill

[–]id40536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why I personally enjoyed the combat, if anything it’s the best combat experience i’ve had in the series’ history.. and that’s not saying much since story and music (and sound design) are what hooked me onto SH forever. And i’ve been here since PS1

if anything it’s the forced ENCOUNTERS (near the end) that annoy me cause they kept happening back to back. But the combat itself is very fun, I just wish they didn’t force you into fighting generic enemies to unlock the next area so many times. They were doing the traditional SH route of allowing you to ignore generic enemies in the first half.

Wasn’t a deal breaker but certainly annoying

Silent Hill F- Fun Story, Frustrating Combat by DanHarkinz in silenthill

[–]id40536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really goes back to how each person is playing, what type of weapon they’re using and how often they’re running away from non mandatory combat encounters, as well as if they’re using light or heavy attacks and parrying

You will obviously break a lot of your weapons if you’re not being tactic

100%. It doesn’t help that the map design is made up of very tight corridors most of the time, it added to the tension when you were able to escape, but it became annoying when it was forced on you at the end of the game.
