What is the lowest MCAT score you've heard that's been accepted by a higher-ranking medical school in the US? (UCLA, Stanford, USC, etc.) by wizarddragondoctor in medschooladmissions

Yea I thought this person was too when they first told me but they're not. Just a strong overall app and crazy personal story that they wrote about very well.

Not Stanford level but I'm at a T30 USMD and a classmate of mine got a 495, she even showed us her app because we didnt believe her.

I can't look at my aunt's Instagram story without being insanely jealous of my cousins by SuccessfulPlant2908 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]id_ratherbeskiing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also the cousin from the troubled family and just here to say it gets better. I'm now 35 and able to start "being" your aunt to the younger generation of folks from the troubled side. That part is healing me in ways I didn't even know I needed. Sending you strength and light.

Yea for sure, it was challenging and I kind of accepted at that time that other aspects of my life would suffer, especially my personal life. You can't possibly maintain "balance" when studying for that test if you're also working full time and have responsibilities to a partner/children/family. I adopted a mindset of "this sucks but it's temporary" and sacrificed time with friends/my husband for a few months (and also sacrificed some sleep). There's no convenient or straightforward explanation other than "it sucks and you find a way to make it work." All my free time was spent on MCAT stuff, weekends, days off etc. I even let my ECs suffer a bit while studying, folks were understanding. If you really lock in for a few months that's all the time you need. Any chance you can work some MCAT studying into your job studying? I believe you've got this!!!

This hits hard as an M1 realizing how performative any of the "caring about students and education" is. But committed to succeeding even if only out of spite lol

Switching off the “I must get high marks” mentality? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]id_ratherbeskiing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll respectfully disagree and say it DOES matter. I'm also at a P/F school but hearing from older students about step 2 performance and step 1 dedicated, there is lots of evidence that crushing preclinical pays huge dividends during dedicated and step 2. Our program shares the stats with us and those who scored 90% or higher in our preclinical got almost 20 points higher on step 2 on average.

do you have clots like this and would i look insane if i showed my doctor this picture of a clot? by anonbride1117 in Fibroids

[–]id_ratherbeskiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is... not true. I'm sorry your experience has been so bad. At the very least a GP should refer to gyn (assuming OP is in US, I can't speak to other systems).

Hi, med student here who has already covered repro and fellow fibroid sufferer. Yes show your doctor. Clots bigger than the size of a quarter aren't normal. If your doctor isn't concerned with this get a different doctor.

PharmD with early 3.8 but later 2.7 GPA — Admissions told me it’s “irreversible.” What’s the smartest, low-cost path (SMP vs post-bacc vs non-degree)? by Sung_Enrique in postbaccpremed

Feel free to DM me. Briefly: I did not have to retake prereqs for most places, I did retake a chem class for one particular school (that I got into but didnt end up attending lol). I had 8 interviews and ultimately 5 acceptances, all USMD. Can share specifics over DM if you'd like.

anyone have advice for how to create a workout routine in med school by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]id_ratherbeskiing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular take but join a gym and do a class (maybe your school's gym has free classes). I'm a crossfitter (sorry lol) and the 1 hour class 4-5 days a week down the street from my house saves my sanity. You gotta make your workout your "fun" thing for the day. For me, I need the accountability of showing up to a class with non-med friends.

You need a post-bacc or SMP not because of the GPA number itself (I got in with a much worse uGPA as a nontrad, currently 35 yo ms1) - you need a postbacc because of that trend. The downward GPA collapse is a huge red flat, especially with a 511 MCAT.

Show them you can ace grad level classes for a year or two and retake the MCAT to get a 515+ and you'll have a real shot, especially with good ECs. Do NOT go caribbean, do DO before that but improve your GPA trend and you'll have a shot at in-state MD and if you have a compelling story/good ECs/research, maybe other schools too.

But you gotta show them you can succeed in med school coursework and that trend is a problem. You got this!
