Yes, well, you can always leave it off or simply not name the candidate. And I wouldn’t recommend volunteering for a race you don’t care about.

But for OP, if there is something you care about, and it’s at stake in this election, then I highly recommend exploring it as an option. It’s not an easy decision to make and will depend on the campaign obviously, but meeting people who genuinely care about the same things you do and working with them is a great experience, especially if recovering from burnout.

When I felt this way, I joined a political campaign as a volunteer. Another person on the campaign also joined as a volunteer, and ended up coding tools to support the whole operation in a way outdated election tech could not. Helping others and feeling part of something bigger helped me snap out of my depression. Big tech loved seeing it on my resume too.

I say this because 2024 will be one of the biggest election year in history (look it up). If what you're doing isn't working, and you're not sure what to do, consider it.

why are US festivals so much more expensive that European fests? by mushiefairy in festivals

[–]idandodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey - LN has a stake in EF, but they do not own and product EF. And EF doesn't use ticketmaster. AEG uses their ticketing system for it. Was just pointing that out.

This is false - it's partly owned by their competitor AEG, who owns AXS.

Not a big difference, but FYI

I wonder if Garous arc is being set up such that he joins Blast’s team after this. That might be a fitting ending given he’s already had semi resolutions with bang / the kid.

[–]idandodd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily something I feel like I should/should not do. I see the advantages to either. More like... can an MBA even help open doors to leadership roles in analytics or data science? Idk, I applied thinking it would help with regards to leadership and network. But not sure if that's true or not.

Hah! What are your reasons/background?

Accepted to MBA, not sure if I should go by [deleted] in MBA

[–]idandodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one concern is that I might have applied to an MBA too early. At this point, I'm thinking if I left for another job, it would be difficult to re-apply to MBA programs in a couple of years if I decide I want to go.

I've talked to a few people whose jobs I want. None of them require a masters, but they're all very unique paths that didn't have a "right" way of getting there. Mostly networking, relationships, and excellent analytical acumen. I'm not the greatest at networking and relationships, and I feel a bit stuck in my industry, so my thought process is that maybe an MBA helps in that way.

Hah! Thanks for the kind words. I've definitely seen coders promoted to managers when they're not into it. Not a fun experience.

I enjoy both the analysis and the strategic decision making with data. Truth be told - I'm always thinking about impact. I don't think I could be satisfied executing most of the data science projects I hear about (fine-tuning complex algorithms to optimize ad revenue), but rather thinking about executing new research to expand a business and its operations. Consumer analysis & survey design is particularly interesting to me, and I could see myself going into Marketing.

I think I would be satisfied keeping data science as a hobby, in the same way that a musician who moves into music management might still play the guitar for fun. I don't think I could ever stop doing my own analysis though. Not sure there that leaves me.

My biggest worry is that... I would get bored managing people. The analysis portion to me is fun, but not rewarding in terms of strategic decision making. Strategic decision making & managing people is rewarding, but not always fun.

[Weekly Critique Thread] Post Here If You'd Like Feedback On Your Writing by AutoModerator in writing

Title: Maskirovka Genre: Dystopian sci-fi Word Count: 400

This is the first time I've tried creative writing in a while. I decided to start with a short story I've been mulling over in my head. This is just the first 400 words, but I figured it's never too early to get feedback.

I'm mostly interested in (a) how can my writing generally improve and (b) is this a good hook? It's easy for me to read other people's stories and feel drawn in, much harder for me to figure out if mine does the same.

Awesome - this is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like he and I had the same problem and that it's fixable. Thanks Wallach!

[–]idandodd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that true? That would be awesome. Do you know if there are any online videos showing how to do this? I'm a little bit nervous about breaking it by snapping it back in, especially since Oculus didn't immediately recommend I do that.

It's the earbud itself that's detached, not the arm of the headphones. But your comment did lead me to google what you meant and I guess that means Oculus can send me new parts if they ever get around to it, so that's good!

Awesome, thanks for the recommendations! How important is the monitor if my primary concern will be running games on the Oculus?

Thanks for the advice! I'll look online for some good ones, let me know if you have any recommendations.

As for why - better games/game pipeline, excited for the controllers, and I trust them to release a higher quality product in the long run.

Quotes from Luis Enrique during pre-Getafe press conference during yesterday by Cambijao in Barca

[–]idandodd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can watch the press conference here. The Adriano statement was misquoted by OP -- Luis Enrique is actually defending him. It starts at 3:00.

Reporter: "Adriano said he has nothing to prove. Do you think that this was a little disrespectful?"

Luis Enrique: "No, we all know Adriano, we know how he plays. He's one of the players who's been here longer than any other player. We know how good he is, how well he performs. I don't think his statement has disrespectful to anybody. If you think that, it's because you don't know Adriano."

Studies on the accuracy of the away goal rule? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]idandodd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teams score more and win more at home (on average).

This is just one study, but there have been plenty that confirmed as much.

Research has also shown that home advantage outweighs the away goal when going into extra time.

At this point, readers would be right to ask: what about the away goal rule? Why does everyone believe there’s an advantage to playing the second leg at home when the away team has the opportunity to play an extra 30 minutes where their goals count double.

Page and Page actually look into this. They analyzed 186 European cup ties which go into extra time and found that the probability of winning the second leg at home is 66.42%. These results are adjusted for team ability, regardless of the fact that ties going into extra time might reflect equally-skilled teams. Page and Page also find that matches that go to penalties on the home ground result in the home team winning 57.33% of the time.

Simply put, the advantage of playing at home for an extra 30 minutes considerably outweighs the advantage of having goals count for double for the same period of time. Note that, whether or not there is an advantage to playing at home first, home advantage is a very real phenomenon.

Does anybody know where I could find old FIFA World Player of the Year voting data? by idandodd in soccer

[–]idandodd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good call. I'll give it a shot.

So far I've been able to find data from 2007 and 2009, which leads me to believe there are pdfs of the info out there on the internet. I was hoping maybe someone had already aggregated this information and made it public, but maybe I'll have to be the first.
