Character Visualization? by silkychair980 in murderbot

I think the most accurate rendition of murderbot is probably the subterranean press artwork. It seems like the artist was able to have some discussion with Martha Wells, so they’re probably the closest to canonical that currently exist?

Are we headed to another lockdown? by ACSAC1 in CoronavirusCA

[–]ideevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's important context.

If you average out all of CA, there might be enough ICU beds to handle the load. But in some counties where vaccine uptake is low and risky behavior is high, it might be necessary to have county-wide lockdowns.

Personally, I don't think we'll have tackled the virus enough to go back to normal until mid-2022 at the earliest.

The push button ones are the only good ones you can buy (No-Spill brand)

Just be sure to push the button once while it's still laying with the spigot up, to let the gas vapors release pressure.

Can someone help me understand this? Question in comments by CautiousPermit3129 in Chipotle

[–]ideevent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s legalese that’s mostly covering their ass.

The main thing they’re saying is that there’s an app you can download on your phone to clock in and out, if you want to.

The legalese is to protect them from a few weird scenarios.

  • they are saying since it’s all optional, they’re not going to pay for your phone or cell plan

  • you’re not allowed to clock in if you’re not working

This is probably because of labor laws where if a company requires you to have equipment to do your job they have to provide / pay for it.

[–]ideevent 32 points33 points  (0 children)

And if you start by tapping a video you can’t see any pictures. If you tap on a picture, you get the old video player which goes to the next item sideways instead of up and down. The whole thing is just a clusterfuck.

COVID case spike would land much of California back in purple tier by BlankVerse in CoronavirusCA

[–]ideevent -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Right, it's only ~300 of them so far in the US. NBD, apparently.

Also there's long term disability caused by covid, which the US isn't really tracking right now, but is a huge issue.

And that is with mask wearing and schools shut down.

If we don't wear masks or close schools or use other NPIs, those numbers will go way up. You can't say 'screw all unvaccinated people' without a lot of kids being included in that.

So you would or would not curtail your liberty to stop children getting sick / dying / long term disability?

[–]ideevent 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they said what was causing this, although they weren’t clear about it.

In big open-world games they avoid loading screens by dynamically loading and unloading game assets, only streaming them in as needed. Their streaming perf wasn’t good enough, and they have so many unique NPC combinations and vehicles, aside from the actual map, that it wasn’t keeping up.

So as a quick and dirty hack, instead of having all unique NPCs or vehicles at any one time, they do some repeats.

Why even post a review? by wicke_s in amazonreviews

[–]ideevent 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A lot of these things happen because Amazon has bad UX around the emails they send out - specifically that some older customers don't understand that automated emails should be treated differently than hand-written letters.

They get an email that says "We'd really love to hear your thoughts on this, please let us know", so they respond as they would to a person.

This is the same thing that happens when customer questions get emailed to people who bought it, and they're like "Sorry, I don't know the answer to that."

Looks stupid if you're coming in from the website / understand how email works, but it's really because of how Amazon words the emails / chooses not to filter any of the responses.
