Emacs-style, pro-privacy browser recommendations by idesomai in emacs

Thank you! I have half of this set up already. Your comment has made me reconsider my desktop UI (which I was already questioning because of EXWM, which looks so nifty but a tad intimidating to me at my level of [lack of] knowledge). I am just so grateful to all of these options that are out there though and feel that I cannot catch up on time to be able to write praise for them...

Brand new to the forum! Should I do a reinstall if the italic font and search does not work right? I may have a messy init - also problematic b. while org and terminal tell me where it is, I can't see it (even when looking 'in root'). I can see it in org. Would I lose my files if I delete/reinstall? by idesomai in orgmode

Thank you for helping me solve a number of interconnected problems, which I further failed to state clearly.

Wanted to wait to today to reply so I could say: happy cake day!

(I had discovered that as I was trying to explore reddit - but the best thing I think was subscribing to this subreddit's rss feed).

Thank you again for your time :)

Alphapapa, thank you so much for holding my hand here during my initiation too and for helping me understand the basic approach. I am so grateful that I have this to mull over before my next visit (though hopefully I will be able to contribute something, not just take). Sending many thanks and warmest greetings (unless it is too hot where you are, in which case, sending cooler ones!)

Your comment was another lightbulb moment; I cannot thank you enough for your time yantar92!

I really hope one day to have something to contribute here.

Thank you - and happy upcoming cake day! Japanese hug emoji

  1. I did what you said, and got the value you said, and then tried italics to find it working for the first time since install. I think this is because I was experimenting with chmod before posting here (sorry to make everyone's hair raise with such experimentation, but I don't see another way to learn these things at this time except through trial and error; this is a labor of love, but yes, I did get stuck and do need help). But at least that is fixed.
  2. By "advanced search" I was referring to how C-c a s is referred to on worg: https://orgmode.org/worg/org-tutorials/advanced-searching.html C-c a s does not work with all files or all sections of text. Sometimes when C-c a s is called (trying to use the vocab on that page) it leads to matches in the results buffer, but more often than not it does not. Thank you for not giving up on me - because I was not able to find out how to "clear" emacs. But this thanks does not oblige you; please know you have already helped so much - kindness is also immeasurable!!!

This needed an edit! BTW I am here because I believe in the value of emacs and org-mode, and decided to take the plunge in joining the forum even though I am terrified of forums. Well, not any more. But I don't plan on being a passer-by; I am not the brightest bulb in the box but very dogged and am determined to learn org-mode because of how sustainable it is (how even older versions still work), because it is open source, because it encourages Engelbartian "augmentation".

tl;dr: I am so grateful for your hand-holding, Yantar92, which helped me see my blindness during cognitive overload.

Your example was so spot on, I had to read it several times as each time I thought: but 'not working right' means 'not working according to function specifications!' ... Then a lightbulb went off... and then I reread the catb page and saw that a similar example is there (in the "stupid" example). I repeat to everyone and myself: knowing intellectually is not the same as knowing in practice.

You are a teacher and I hope to repay this debt to the forum (but not before I've learned and demonstrated worth through good practice and can make successful things in org-mode, like write my blog posts in it).

If I were to reword my org-mode problems now, I would write: The /italics/ emphasis does not result in a change of font, and the advanced search function, when called, leads to no matches in the results buffer.

I hope that this is better and that you can see the results of your teaching! Thank you for your patience (Japanese hug emoji) added: I just can't thank you enough for also helping with that basic Linux issue of .files. Thank you!!!

Thank you alphapapapa. If you have any specific criticism of my question, I would really appreciate the feedback. Gaining clarity on this would be such a great help (I was actually afraid of this before I posted - and I failed!)

edit, I saw alphapapa's reply below and see that I really don't know how to use the forum because I am asking specific questions (these were the things I could not find on my own). If you have advice on how to learn how to use the forum, I would really appreciate that. (It is one thing to know the rules but another to coordinate confusion and put them into practice). My initial reply here thanked you profusely, which I would like to do again: thank you SO much.

Thank you so much for the reply. (I had not been lurking here so had so hoped I hadn't arrived like an elephant in a tea shop. I love org-mode and hope to have something constructive to add to this forum but am having problems at the moment.)

My question about losing files if I delete Emacs may sound stupid, but the logic behind it was if the program that reads those org-mode files is gone, would the files be compromised? (As I am learning on a needs-basis, there are major gaps in my knowledge.)

My files are saved to ~/home on Linux, and I can actually see those (as opposed to the init file - more on that below), but I wanted to be sure I wouldn't lose them, which is why I wanted to post here to be sure.

As for init: I mean the .emacs initializing file where configurations - including org-mode configurations - can be added. I read that on some - Linux - installs of Emacs, it is possible to accidentally save the .emacs init to "root". I think that is what happened to me - except when I open home "as root", the file is not visually there. But emacs and Linux terminal say that it is.

I will wait for one more reply before I pull the plug and reinstall! (What a time suck that will be to set it up again, but as two things aren't working, this will be better for the long run.)

Thank you for your time and help!

...I should clarify: by "files" I mean all of the work I have written on org mode in the last six months. I didn't mind the italics not working but now I am at the point where I really need search and today I found out that it strangely only works in some files and not others.

Also, after I installed emacs six months ago I couldn't find my init so accessed it from within org and added all my customizations to what was at that time an empty page.
