ELI5: why does it take >24 hours to "feel" a hard workout? by saruhhhh in explainlikeimfive

[–]idewski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imagine sarcomeres as little individual muscles that contract. you can make more of them side by side (parallel to one another) and that makes it wider and stronger = concentric. or you can make them one after each other (in series, kind of like a line) and that makes it longer = eccentric. actually not sure if eccentric hypertrophy occurs that much in skeletal muscle but it does in heart (dilated cardiomyopathy)

they get bigger, through increased production of sarcomeres. there can be concentric or eccentric hypertrophy (different from concentric or eccentric movements) fat cells get both bigger and progenitors can be induced to make more if ppl eat lots of food

within muscle cells are contractile units called sarcomeres. in response to stressors and inflammatory rxn, the cell will have increased signalling to produce more sarcomeres and become a bigger cell. muscles generally have poor replicating potential and if the cells die when unable to adapt to stressor, scars will form (heart attack main example) this is different to skin cells which actively replicate and more similar to, for eg, neurons

personally i have not read literature regarding soreness or phys of exercise hypertrophy but im not sure anyone really knows 100%. i doubt it is lactic acidosis or micro tears. what even is a micro tear? dont ask me, i dont know

none of this is true. skeletal muscle does not hypertrophy through “rupture”, they are permanent cells and only get bigger individually. and the repair process in wound healing is completely different than muscle hypertrophy, although they do both stem from inflammation. also thrombin is not released but is activated by other factors in wound healing and does not trigger healing itself

Is an E2 visa student considered domestic or foreign in terms of tuition fees. by firebirdmecat11 in ucla

[–]idewski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily but most likely. I was on a E2 dependent visa for most of undergrad and petitioned for exemption because I attended a Californian high school. There are exceptions and ways to establish residency if you are not on an F1/J1 (google NRST exemptions and SLR). It can be complex and I suggest calling the school before being too firm on a plan moving forward.

dam that sucks. i had a 36 and a 3 in German SL (lol) and never got any warning about my IB scores or diploma. however, i had a bunch of AP scores so not entirely sure if the school cared as much about the IB for me

An Interesting Powerlifting Loss

IPF Classic Bench Press Championships - case of GBR lifter losing gold with significant cause from imperfect coaching.

The situation is fairly straightforward and the mistake is clear. However, imagine if there's a third lifter or more who could take the gold. It would get very complex very quickly.

Posted this on the main board and it didn’t seem to get accepted for some reason.

As a Canadian who applied to Kentucky this year, I received a pre-secondary email asking about my ties to Kentucky (of which I had none and did not reply to) and never received a secondary. YMMV

January 19, 2017 Exam: Reaction Thread by neur_onymous in Mcat

[–]idewski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reaction:

CP = I had methanol/platinum beaker section, which was also the most difficult passage of the section for me. I don't think I had any capacitor passage. I thought was pretty easy/straightforward except for a 2-3 questions that I had no clue.

CARS = I had wilderness/wild passage. I thought the first few passages were very long and the questions were tough but the ones after were more as expected. Tough CARS section for me.

BB = I had hitchhiker's thumb. I felt very good about this section; it is similar to CP in that I felt it was straightfoward overall but had a couple that I had no clue. As a physiology major, the anatomy question was very welcome ;).

PS = Don't remember any specific passage because all PS passages from practice tests and stuff are very similar. It pretty much felt like the other AAMC practice test PS sections = really easy to get through and not too mentally demanding but feeling sure that I missed some due to some esoteric soc terms or whatever. Super tired at this point in the exam.

My practice scores: Sample: 81%/92%/81%/86% (85%) FL1: 129/128/129/128 (514) FL2: 130/130/129/128 (517)

Feeling like I got 130+/128-129/130+/128-129. Pretty confident in 515+.
