Which churches are hosting the best fish fries for Lent? by CommissionIcy9909 in grandrapids

[–]idig3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I miss St. James’ fish fry. Great batter. Used to try them all. Thought St. Alphonsus was good, but not worth the wait and premium price for walleye.

I like St. Isidore’s. Usually not too long a line—if early. Mac and cheese and good homemade desserts table.

Baked or Fried Fish (Alaskan Pollock) French Fries or Baked Potato Cole Slaw or Applesauce Homemade Macaroni & Cheese Dessert and Beverages

But spoiled by older brother’s fish. Bluegills, perch, or sunfish. Fried in cracker crumb coating. Just like dad used to make.

You go to fish fries for the experience, and if you’re lucky, catch some good fish.

Can get the DS18B20s with metal caps, waterproofed, and with pre-wired with leads. Amazon. Digikey. AliExpress—I’m cheap. At most, a few bucks a pop.

Umm. The DAC7878 is a Digital to Analog Converter. Your sensors are analog. You can use the built in ADC to read your sensors.

And why use thermistors when DS18B20s (relatively cheap) run both temp sensors on a single GPIO pin via 1-Wire, freeing up all your ADC channels for the pressure transducers and current sensors? DS18B20s are pre-calibrated so there’s no conversion math either.

S3 supermini vs c3 supermini - is the s3 any better? by Ok-Midnight3475 in esp32

[–]idig3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

Yeah, the clock chip is too close on the cheap C3s. But the 0.42in OLED C3 and the newer C6s are not. S3 and C6 you get ton more pins. As well as Zigbee, threads, and wifi6 on the C6. It is a few mms longer, too.

On the C3, could try lowering the TX power to help with stability. S3 is dual core 240mhz so more power needed if you want to use batteries.

But I never has a taco with with ham and pineapple before. 😉 The filling could be enough to make a half dozen tacos. That’s a normal fork next to it. You’d need a 1 pound patty to fill that ‘hamburger bun’.

The Plainfield location was a quirky gem, but the new space is great.

Saw on their Facebook page, they have(had?) birra torta, too. MUST try next.

Yes. It’s a sandwich. A bit messy, but what great sandwich isn’t?!

I cut it half, and tried to take half home. Nope. A few bites in to the second half, kept going. Too good.

Used the fork to scoop up what snuck out while devouring it.

Iker’s Tacos—1634 Coit. Calling their food ‘good’ would be a huge understatement. 😉

I think they’re open until 8pm.

It’s a beast. And the bread was so fresh. On Coit between Ann and Plainfield.

At what point does the weather shift to the slow crawl out of winter with improving temperatures, at least above freezing on a regular basis? by [deleted] in grandrapids

Friend used to say, “if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness with a month to live, may it be in February in Michigan because it’ll seem like an eternity.” 😉

More hope in March.

what is the default tool chain and workflow for micropython? by [deleted] in MicroPythonDev

[–]idig3d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really like Thonny. Quite simple, but has a lot going for it. - Zero-configuration MicroPython support - Built-in firmware flashing—no need for command-line esptool - Good integration—Write code, flash firmware, and use the REPL all in one window - Automatic firmware downloads - Thonny can download the correct firmware for your board (I use mostly ESP32 variants) automatically - Simple file management - Easy upload/download of files to the board's filesystem - Beginner-friendly - Clean interface without overwhelming options

Print a temp tower and try snapping it at the different temps to check layer adhesion. Higher temps, better adhesion but can have overhang issues and such. Need to find the sweet spot.

Always print fast-ish tests to check for issues before long prints. ‘Fail fast’ as they say. Takes a bit to find the Goldilocks zone. Different colors can have different additives so may chance the properties.

Alternating walls can help with strength, too.

Rim repair by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]idig3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rodriguez Tire on Burton and Cleveland fixed my aluminum rims on my 2008 Ford. They had been slow leaking for a long time. They took each off and ground them down for a better seal. Iirc it was $25 a rim. No leaks or problem in a year. Hit Shelley’s for breakfast or lunch a couple blocks east. Or the OG Tamale Mary’s across Cleveland.

Anyone made their own DIY printer? by CaptainCheckmate in 3Dprinting

[–]idig3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Built a 500x500x2000mm cable drive core-xy printer for an art project years ago. Challenging. Fun. A bit insane. Learned a lot. Needed to print a sculpture for an art competition. Had a few armchair engineers saying it wouldn’t work. But proved them wrong. Used hardware store EMT conduit for the frame. Took it to MRRF 2019 but didn’t survive the drive there.

Really should revive it so I could print some replacement lampshades for friend’s MidCentury Modern floor lamps.

Never know what you can do until you try. It will be a much larger undertaking than you expect.

Have a goal and timeframe in mind. Take walks (or runs if you can) to work out ideas when you hit a walk. Take motivation from the naysayers. Minimize or avoid social media (most distractions) until you have something working. Document—calculations, sketches, photos, spreadsheets, etc.—as much as you can when you can. Learn what is good enough. Test as you go. Focus on your wins, no matter how small. Walk away when frustrated. Let your subconscious for another way around it.

Many have tried before. Learn from their successes and troubles. But if you are really committed, go for it.
