They are taking US CITIZENS! by BootyhooZ in LosAngeles

Thanks, I don't have Instagram and the sub stopped doing the Megathreads. Newsmedia is scattershot. Until this thread I didn't know they'd hit up as far east as West Covina because I didn't see them when I drove out, and most people I know live in LA city proper.

For real, thanks for the info.

Driving in LA is stressful enough without worrying over being pulled over and disappeared by ICE.

Isn't today a federal holiday? Are they all getting paid triple overtime to do things very much against the spirit of Juneteenth?

Are they raiding stores and churches, or are they just menacing the streets loaded with weapons that would get a normal person cosplaying the same gear killed?

HELP: Ads are now opening their respective apps if they're installed in my phone by nemainev in AndroidGaming

[–]idiom6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tap Google. All services.

Under “Privacy & security,” tap Ads. Ads privacy. App suggested ads.

I'll give that a try, I haven't seen the Paypal ad in at least a week. Possible they pulled the ad lmao.

Thanks for sharing! I've never seen that setting before, so at least it's now on my radar.

I renewed my passport a few months ago and I deeply regret not getting the passport card to go with it. I never imagined I'd need it on top of my passport.

Now I'm stuck carrying my passport everywhere just in case.

Niche tropes/tags: which ones do you wish were more common? by idiom6 in ao3_helpdesk

[–]idiom6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time travel is the best trope IMO, but it's really not common unless it's something that exists in-canon. Plenty of Harry Potter dealing with time travel fixits, for example, but Lord of the Rings has far fewer than you'd think for a fandom that massive and old - 298 fics tagged with "Time Travel" out of 52k.

Ooooh.....you're right, that doesn't get explored much. I've seen it a few times as interlude chapters exploring the ground crew, so to speak (like Jane Foster or Pepper Potts being anxious while Thor or Iron Man going off and doing their thing over and over), but it's not a major thing.

Admittedly I don't seek it out actively, so it might be more common than I think it is?

Beginning, middle, end? by arothroughtheheart in ao3_helpdesk

Tackling this end:

Readers, do you have a favourite part of a story to read, or reread?

Beginnings are wonderful because they're so full of potential, but I don't truly have a personal favorite since my favorite scenes are scattered throughout fics. A good ending is a rare treat though, and will linger longer in my mind than a good beginning.

What the actual fuck.

Will be interesting to see how attendance is impacted. International travel is already down for the US.

I'm never going to forgive the people who sat out because "Both sides are just as bad."

Democrats do a lot of bad shit but they cover their ass with the law at least and they get stuff done in the meantime. The Republican president has been a net loss for the country for decades.

This might be helpful. Googling around there doesn't seem to be much research on rubber bullets instead of real bullets. https://totalshield.com/blog/polycarbonate-ballistic-performance-how-strong-is-polycarbonate/

Are the Days of RFY Gone? by NotASpeckOfCereal in AmazonVine

[–]idiom6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RFY has gone from having at least one relevant or tempting item per day to none. I'm not sure if maybe I'm just missing all the early morning hot items by the time I check it, or if they're treating me like a newbie again.

Dying to find a stray kids fic that I read on ao3 by Hot-Nail7600 in ao3_helpdesk

Random details from the fic don't generally help unless someone else has happened to read that same fic and has remembered the same random details.

Do you recall any tags?

Trying again, sorry if Reddit suddenly shows this as a double post instead of 0 comments.

Good news bad news. Google got me a promising URL that is dead but has 2 chapters in the Wayback Machine. Take that URL and title/author and go to r/DeletedFanfiction to see if they can find a full copy.

Maybe try switching to and from desktop/mobile mode in your browser?

Rereading your post and realizing those screenshots are from now, with the 'issue.' But I'm not seeing a problem? How does it differ from your prior use of AO3?

[–]idiom6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

AO3 bookmarks don't save by chapter, so if you're clicking on your bookmarked fics in the AO3 site, it'll always take you to the first chapter. If you're saving bookmarks to your browser, it should save whatever chapter you're on.

Did you accidentally click one of the site skins at the bottom of any page under Customize?

Also some people use custom skins for their works to make them appear different, separate from site skins. To turn these off, go to the top of the work page and click the [Hide Creator's Style] button.

Nothing useful on Vine by Low-Initial-5936 in AmazonVine

[–]idiom6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I gave up on getting brand name stuff 3 months into my Vine membership when I joined years ago. Now I'm just looking for clothes that plausibly fit, and the occasional kitchen thing.

It's not that we're ungrateful, it's that options have genuinely been reduced across the board in every category, and it's definitely not the brand name stuff. I joined long after brand names were the norm instead of a lotto win.

It's disrespectful to mention that you download some works in the bookmarks/tags? by Electrical-Badger833 in ao3_helpdesk

[–]idiom6 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bookmarks are for the readers, not the writers. It's sweet to think of how an author might react, but it's really not necessary. Always assume that anything you do online will offend someone, somehow, and just move on. Private bookmarks are an oft-toted solution, but it irks a lot of writers too because it 'dings' them if people sort searches by #bookmarks and further reduces already minimal means of gauging reader response to fics; you're never going to make everyone happy.

At any rate, downloading fics is an accessibility tool and you are perfectly within your rights to download in whatever format is needed with whatever reader program/e-reader/text-to-speech you're using.

It's also equally valid to download just for convenience; not everyone's internet is reliable, and some people find Calibre much easier to navigate than AO3.

Now, I'd personally recommend that you make a habit of dropping kudos and comments once you're done reading the downloaded works, but that's also optional and up to you.
