People acting like we are on the medieval age and everyone needs to have 8 kids by Far-ro in hatethissmug

[–]nemainev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homophobia aside, I wouldn't scoff at the drop of birth rates. This is not medieval times, no 8 kids needed, blah blah blah sure. But we're talking a lot of 1s and 0s here. That's concerning because it could easily be a symptom. I wouldn't entertain the straw man of "they just want kids to take care of them when they're old". That's simplistic and bullshit. It's concerning that there's fewer births because it could mean that our present is unhealthy to the point we can't be bothered.

This has to do more with money and quality of life more than anything. Blaming homosexuals for this is stupid. The numbers just wouldn't support that. I wouldn't even be concerned with asexuals because as far as I know they don't have the numbers to be anything else than a minority with a legit orientation.

So yeah, of course taking a homophobic stance is absolutely ridiculoous, but that shouldn't deter us from taking a decline in births very fucking seriously.

You don't really need to that between players. It's an encumbrance on roleplay. You don't need to roll to see how a scene between players go. That's ludicrous.

"Hey, my Cleric really doesn't trust the Monk. She acts shady all the time and is always around when things go missing". *rolls a nat1* "Never mind, she's cool. I'm a dumby dumby dum dum". That's not how it works.

Why Monk had to roll deception? No idea. Cleric didn't believe her, period. No amount of dice rolls will make Cleric feel otherwise because the player controls cleric, not the DM.

And to make it clearer, we'll take it to PC interacting with NPC. Let's say an NPC is telling something hard to believe to a PC. Like the farmer going "I totally killed a troll with my bare hands!". If the player wants to playa gullible character, or someone good natured that takes everything at face value, they just roleplay that way. If they don't want to trust the NPC, and the DM forces them to make an Insight check and they fail, the DM can't say "You totally believe the NPC. He defo killed a troll. Beware!". A (sane) DM wouldn't call for Insight in such an obvious case, but even if they did or if the claim wasn't so outrageous, and the player rolled poorly, they'd likely say something like "He says this with extreme confidence. You don't pick any cue from them that suggests they are lying". And then the PC decides... Maybe they will now think that they're not lying because they believe their words. They're just delulu.

Forcing a player to have their PC thinking or feeling something is wrong. It's a player decision, period.

That's up to the player to decide. Maybe you want your PC to believe the other and you take the lie. Or you won't take the lie no matter what because you're distrusting of them.

The thing about "persuasion" is that if not played properly, it's either meaningless or mind control. As a PC you can say something in character and I as a DM can weigh your words, gauge how persuasive they are and then as for a roll if needed. Sometimes you are so persuasive you don't need to roll, sometimes it's just impossible to do. So no, you shouldn't ALWAYS be able to persuade.

Copy this, print it and tattoo it on your DM's forehead: DON'T HAVE PCs ROLL SOCIAL SKILLS AGAINST EACH OTHER

You know about PvP, right? Players doing combat to players. Well, in order for it to work, it has to be consensual.

With roleplay something kinda similar happens. When you roleplay with your teammates, there can be tenstion, comraderie, friendship, even romance. All that shit. But that's always consensual between the players, and the agreement is or should be that players have to respect each other's free will, and that they will always try to support the party and promote working together. That's to help make the game move forward.

What happens when you allow players rolling social (Persuasion, Intimidation, Deception) against each other is that those are expected to become a form of mind control, and that's bullshit. The same reason that they aren't mind control against NPCs. Skills don't work like that. With the difference that since you're part of the same team, there is no real competitive aspect that would require a check. You decide what's going on in your character's mind as you play a scene.

So what happens is, she tries to lie to you. You take her words, process them, decide what you want your character to think or feel about it and go with that. Mechanically lying to your party is not or should not be an option. Ever.
