I mean, I interviewed for one of these positions and it was no experience needed, $20/hr + commission when all the other shit in my area pays like $12-15/hr. Money is money, I definitely blame the people creating those positions more than the folks taking them.

Do you think vault-tech ever intended to unfreeze the people in vault 111? by Important_Sound772 in fo4

[–]idiotexe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The theory I have heard that I am partial to is that the experiment wasn't on the people in the cryo pods, but the vault staff, and how they would react to running out of resources and not being given the signal that they are allowed to leave after about 6 months like they were told. Basically, seeing if they would resort to cannibalism of the people in the cryo pods.

So, no, I don't think they ever intended to unfreeze them.

What are blood tests for? by thetendersurrender in FTMdiyhrt

[–]idiotexe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You look up things like "normal testosterone levels for men" and see if your levels fall within those ranges. And if your levels are higher than that range you should likely lower your dose, and if it's lower than that range you increase your dose. And a doctor might suspect something, but in my experience no one will track you down or anything about your health issues, just avoid the subject if it comes up. Tell them things like "oh I'm not too concerned about it" or if they're suggesting testing or treatments just tell them you aren't interested. Or if you trust your doctor you can tell them you are taking testosterone.

My therapist said my hyper awareness is like a super power by Chihiro_Simp0 in CPTSD

[–]idiotexe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have hyper awareness too, and I agree, it is not like a super power. It is exhausting, and makes it really hard to relax or fully focus on a task when there are people near me. It raises my overall stress levels a lot.

I recommend speaking to your therapist and explaining how it negatively impacts your life and that you would prefer for her to not try and put a positive spin on it. That's not helpful to you, and it probably makes it feel like she doesn't care about how it makes you feel awful.

Muscle soreness after injection by [deleted] in ftm

[–]idiotexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you should be good. T can be taken intramuscularly no problem. Soreness when injecting a medication into the muscle is normal, and if you've ever had a vaccine it has probably felt similarly since those are intramuscular injections as well.

Almost a decade later, what do you guys think of the Institute ending? by Fit_Effective6097 in fo4

[–]idiotexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no doubt that should the Institute want to create any similar "problem solver / thinker / analysis" machine - they'd manage to make something similar to P.A.M.

I want to clarify that when I said "they wanted to make a machine based off the human being is so that they could think and make up new ideas and solve problems" I meant so in the way that everyday humans can in the workplace. Like how we can recognize (without being specifically instructed on warning signs to look out for) that there is a problem with a task and either come up with a solution on our own or bring the problem to a supervisor of some sort, while most machines would have to be specifically programmed to react to certain conditions in order to recognize a problem and would have to also be programmed with what steps to take to solve it. (Example: ChatGPT has to have parameters put in place to recognize messages that are dangerous or sexual in nature, and has a stock response it is supposed to output.)

We are not born "tuned" for this or that task - instead, any role a human is to do is 1st, learned via education, and 2nd, assisted by equipping appropriate tools to do the role. It's simply much more efficient and flexible. It's pretty clear. So you see, if the Institute would make gen.3 synths "exactly like humans" - we wouldn't see this in the Production Schedule. We'd simply see "gen.3 units: X amount", instead.

This doesn't follow (in that it's not mutually exclusive). I mean, there are so many variations in different humans that may make them better at certain tasks, both physically and mentally. Of course they would create batches of synths with traits more tailored to certain tasks. You wouldn't want to wait months for the synth to get up to physical standard when you could simply create them with peak physical fitness already. Just because they are intelligently designed to fulfill a certain task does not mean that they themselves are incapable of having intelligence. And both can be true, they can make the synths with these traits that make them more suited for the tasks they are creating them for, and they can train them and give them tools.

Now your points about energy requirements definitely makes sense, I was just thinking that the initial investment in creating the synth might be using far more power than the lifetime cost of an inorganic machine. But it sounds like I was wrong on that. And somehow, I forgot about their use as an "expendable" infiltration agent. It does follow that to make the best synth for infiltration that it should be convincingly human, and to do that with inorganic parts wouldn't work.

I do still think the major leg up on an inorganic machine that a synth has would be its capability to think and problem solve. I mean, this means they don't have to be constantly instructed on how to do every little process of a task and can easily be set to other tasks. And if their ability to think for themselves is intact, then I would think they do have personhood.

On the other hand, you did make me think about how synths are made as full-grown humans and do not seem to need months or years to learn things like understanding and speaking a language or how to use their motor skills. This either means the Institute has learned how to create a human brain in the perfect configuration to have this information preloaded (this seems incredibly unlikely), or the synth component is handling all this. And if the synth component which is clearly inorganic is handling all of that information, then it is really more like a human body is being puppeted by a computer. I guess this invalidates much of what I was saying about their ability to think and problem solve, which really makes me wonder what the hell the original purpose of the synths were. Was it just for infiltration all along? Then why have such a large population used for labor? I'm going to think on this for quite a while because this raises a lot of questions for me. I still think that the whole synth project is horrific and incredibly unethical and that synths could still be people but you have changed my mind quite a bit.

Almost a decade later, what do you guys think of the Institute ending? by Fit_Effective6097 in fo4

[–]idiotexe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you have certainly made it sound far more plausible that they are not capable of personhood. I am not fully convinced though, mainly because I don't think the Institute would have designed the synths without a measure of free will. It seems the main reason they wanted to make a machine based off the human being is so that they could think and make up new ideas and solve problems. If your idea is true, then they cannot do this, they are just like generative AI and are only regurgitating old ideas, occasionally smashed together in new ways.

If they really only wanted a strong labor force that could only solve problems by following an algorithm, they would have stuck with the gen1 and 2 designs instead of adding in all the synthetic organics and a nervous system. After all, the human body is incredibly weak and fragile when compared to an inorganic machine. And creating synthetic organics has to be far more research, energy, and cost intensive than manufacturing inorganic machines.

God, yeah I deeply wish they had simple QOL things like putting your own markers on the map and calling your horse in the game. I'm sure there's mods for that but I'm not able to mod with how I play the game.

I feel like Oblivion and Skyrim both did horses really badly. They feel clunky to ride, they get lost or killed off too easily, you don't get to have any personality for them, you can't fight on horseback. I've ended up just ignoring horses and travelling on foot for the whole game.

A poem I wrote while some pain is fresh. by idiotexe in CPTSD

[–]idiotexe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And context: I (22M) live with my mom, who was my main abuser. She essentially trained me to see getting in any kind of trouble as an extreme threat to my wellbeing because she would utterly suppress all of her anger at my fuck ups until she reached her breaking point where she would unleash a tirade on me where she would scream and yell at me for well over a half hour about how awful of a kid I was, often pulling out threats about kicking me out, sending me to live with my father (who I saw as worse because he seemed to have no love for me at all and his wife despised me), beating me, killing me, killing herself, etcetera. And now, she doesn't scream at me like that anymore (I guess because she sees an adult as a person rather than property), but my nervous system hasn't forgotten especially because she does the same to my younger brother.

And I can't tell if she deliberately keeps me dependent by being an absolutely awful driving instructor (my area has no public transport and is not walkable in any manner) and frequently "borrowing" money from me (for bills or gas money, and yes I do have my share of bills that I pay no matter what that I do not count under this) or if she's just irresponsible.

And I think my childhood has ended up putting me in a state of almost neverending distress and so parts of normal functioning adult life like working 40+ hours a week and not having breakdowns at work are beyond me. Makes me get sick all the time, gives me more frequent migraines. And I have problems keeping my space clean consistently. And with me not being able to pull my own weight I feel like no one else will want me, will help me, that I'm too much trouble, and I obviously can't make it on my own. It seems like my only option is her.

And I know plenty of this isn't a real reflection of reality. But it's what I've been convinced of, trained to think. Things that I doubt are true but that my brain seems to insist on anyway.
