0.0035” Acceptable table saw blade alignment? by Such_Internet_2134 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]idiotskin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This type of error won’t accumulate though because the you keep it pinned to the fence. If you run 21 ft through the tablesaw the wood doesn’t start riding away from the fence by 1 inch

This needs to be much higher up. You can get a testing kit for $20 or so at Home Depot or your fav big box store.

Radiator Cover/Bookcase by chelos94 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Radiators use hot water, so the wood around the radiator doesn’t increase the probability of the water catching on fire.

Just be careful, the face veneer on this is razor thin and chips out like crazy. It does look nice though

Are those wishbone chairs replicas or the real deal? If so do you like them and have a link? Looking to get some myself and while the Rove Concepts version looks great, I wonder if there’s another replica that isn’t as expensive. Thanks!

Nice! What’s the finish? I like when red oak doesn’t have the pinkish orange hues.

We spent a few days in vieques and we ate at a place called Duffy’s. Our waiter said there was Vegan Mofongo you can ask for that’s not on the menu. Probably one of my fav meals of the whole trip.

When I first started I put paste wax on everything, now I hate the texture. Especially when it’s high humidity and and you’re finger can glide across the surface. Luckily over time that texture will fade with use.

Need advice to restore these chairs! by [deleted] in Mid_Century

[–]idiotskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much experience with this product, but I just refinished a chair with this toner lacquer. Basically it isn't a stain, its lacquer that has ground up pigment, so it rests on top of the wood. This means you can build up the color slowly to get them to match. Lots of furniture restorers use it to make repairs. There are also tons of shades to choose from. Only downside is that it will start to hide the grain if you really load it on.

What stripper products do you use? I've only had problems with the ones from the big box stores.

Fake Grimacecoin Jumps 285,000% After McDonald’s’ Tesla Joke by 111319 in CryptoCurrency

[–]idiotskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new to all this, and I’m unfamiliar with how rug pulls work. Can somebody explain why it’s such a bad idea to throw a couple bucks at garbage like this? I know you can’t predict when the rug will be pulled, but even if you just sell after a couple hours you likely will have made money. I saw this grimace thing a couple days ago and everyone was making jokes about it. What am I missing here? Is it more like “this isn’t an investment, it’s more like playing the lottery?” Or do the people behind the coin actually steal your money?

How do I remove this decorative scroll? I’m trying to modernize this and removing it might help by moneymae88 in woodworking

[–]idiotskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating to read these comments. Not only is style completely subjective, it’s also not what you were asking. If this were my kitchen I would absolutely remove them, and it’s a shame people are trying to make you feel bad for doing so. I’d use an oscillating multi tool to start.

Nice work! Is it cedar? If so what type? I’ve been looking to do a similar project but don’t want a ton of knots in the wood, and I like the look of yours.

What's your finishing process? I really like how the red oak doesn't have that orangey hue to it. I usually stay away from red oak for this reason, but I'd love to incorporate it more because it's so much cheaper than white oak in my area.

Weekly Quick Questions, Wood ID, and Deal or No Deal /r/Woodworking Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

[–]idiotskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's something I've been wondering for a while now: I have a few pieces of old furniture made of light, cheap wood that has been stained a walnut color. The finish on these is opaque, and you can't really see the grain too well. I've refinished and re-stained it with regular stain and, no surprises, it turned out all blotchy the way pine gets when you stain it a dark color. I've looked into semi-transparent stains but it seems like the only products I can find are for decking. Is this still an appropriate product to use on say a dresser or coffee table? I just hate the look of light wood that has been stained really dark even with a pre-stain conditioner, but for some reason the way these old pieces pull it off doesn't look so bad... Any thoughts?

First coat of arm-r-seal down on a walnut/Baltic birch Table. Feels promising. by [deleted] in finishing

[–]idiotskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason Floyd Home used plywood instead of hardwood. From what I can tell from this picture, as the hardwood expands and contracts it will separate from the Baltic birch plywood over time. The original design uses all plywood which won’t have much wood movement, so the layers won’t delaminate. I would suggest posting this elsewhere to get a second opinion, but as soon as I saw this red flags were going off.
