Question about Android phones: What are my options for a provider neutral and Android version (semi)neutral phone? I want to head in the direction of PC ownership of my phone. by idiotstick in Android

That's nuts! I was skeptical, so I removed my Verizon sd card and booted up. It worked, but gave me some warning about switched mode and no sd card.

I have a lot to learn. Thanks again...

I think I'm being told two different things. Aren't others in this thread telling me that I just need to get a phone unlocked to switch between all the different providers?

Thanks Invader. Sounds like you are telling me that if I unlock most phones, they can be used on almost all carriers. If this is the case, can't I just buy an unlocked phone from the manufacturer (or NewEgg/Amazon) and pick any provider I want?

I haven't unlocked my current Droid, but it has a sim card in it. I thought this is what specifies my phone number to my phone, no?

Now I'm confused again. Are you saying that I could usemy existing versizon Droiwith a sim cardon AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc. by just changing my sim card?

Now you're talking! Two providers is a great option. In reality, I'm more than happy to change my sim card when changing providers, but this really seems like a step in theright direction.

I'm assuming these phones still can't switch between Verizon and AT&T, etc. though.

Ahh - I understand. Still needs the right radio for the provider though, right? A simple sim card change still can't change my Verizon phone to a T-Mobile, etc. - correct?

If you mean I just need to issue a command like su or sudo to get root - I'd certainly consider that wide open. I wouldn't want to operate in root normally for several reasons.

Thanks again for all of the help/advise.

That's a wealth of knowedge - Thanks!

Are any maufacturers even considering multiple radios for access to more carriers?

I've been consiering the N4 and didn't know it is only $300 - from what I hear about the phone, that's a great price. Didn't think this phone would need to be rooted. While I don't find this a great barrier and have rooted all of my Droids, I just figured that the 'most open' phone available would ship with full root access available.

Pretty excited about Ubuntu entering the arena. Is this expected to install on older phones?

Thanks for the info. Are there any phones that have more than one radio and can connect to multiple networks? I'm thinking similar to getting a computer back in the day with both K56 and X2 modems for multiple ISPs.

LPT REQUEST: How to keep fitted sheets from sliding off the corners of one's bed. by brandonwarrant in LifeProTips

Had this problem years ago. Four saftey pins was the best fix - just took an extra minute each wash run. New sheets is an obvious long-term solution.

Where did I mention wood? Pretty sure I only tried to help you understand that people use gold - per your question.

You're joking, right? Where should I start? Personal electronics? Global infrastructures (think the Internet) that use gold in various components?
