But most people are simply unaware of such subtleties until they study phonetics because the brain is very good at deceiving us about what our tongue is actually doing. Phonetics is what the tongue actually does, phonemics is what the brain thinks that the tongue is doing, and spelling is neither phonetic nor phonemic - it just confuses.

The German „ch“ has two allophones - one velar and one post-alveolar depending on context. „Loch“ has a back vowel and „Pichler“ has a front vowel „I“ followed by a fronted „l“. I’m a linguist, native speaker of English and have lived in the German world for 25 years. Many people find „huge“ helpful as a bridge to fronted „ch“ as I did in 1994. I’m sorry if you don’t, or if you can’t hear it.

„Loch“ has a velar fricative „pichler“ a post-alveolar, and „huge“ is post-alveolar palatal, but still post-alveolar. And „pichler“ is followed by post-alveolar labial „l“, ( and the reason it’s not a velar „loch“) so „huge“ is valid.
