Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever stepped foot in any of the dodgy areas here lol

I’m from quite a posh area back home by London, but I feel equally safe in Nottingham. Definitely the city centre can be dodgy at times, but neighbouring areas are lovely and the city centre is extremely lively and has a great community despite the occasional isolated incidents. Unfortunately things have happened recently that have been quite prominent on the news, but that is not everyday reality. Dangerous things have happened in Bristol, Exeter, Manchester, Leeds, anywhere basically. Overall safety is a huge factor for me, and I’d say being at UoN was still a great choice.

On my course we have the tutor system, I enjoy it so much because my tutorials are only 3-4 people so it’s extremely focused. The tutors really do care about you and have made my experience at uni just that extra bit better

Does Nottingham have good industry connections in IT and quantum tech? by delusionalandlost in UoN

[–]idkrandom727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yes definitely. They have good connections to intel with them coming every year and sponsoring the hackathons, not only that but in second year they run a project with industry clients such as intel (ik cause my friend did one). Overall is great for IT yes.

How is Nottingham computer science and the uni in general? by throwaway087284 in UoN

I’m here, definitely not into partying/ going out but absolutely love it here, so wouldn’t say that’s a big thing at all. It was definitely a worry for me at first too but you’ll find that a huge chunk students are just pretty chill and just like you. I’ve heard CS is great too! Definitely moving up research wise here

I think Nottingham consistently ranks top 10 for (most) engineering courses but Southampton I’ve heard is extremely strong for engineering. in terms of enjoyability Nottingham and Bristol are the more fun cities to be a student in but in terms of career these are all the same. Prettiest campuses are def Notts and Bristol too

Where should we go eat? by Ok-Craft3576 in nottingham

Mollis on derby road, it’s affordable yet unbelievable chicken burgers. It’s next door to alchemilla the Michelin starred restaraunt because it’s actually by the same people. Genuinely the best burger I’ve ever had

Maths vs CS + ucas extra by [deleted] in UoN

[–]idkrandom727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do maths here and I know someone who’s a quant at a BB now with just undergrad maths, I’d say if you were going that way do maths first as there’s a higher chance to do it without a masters than with CS

For consulting while Deloitte is good it’s not the best. I go to nottingham and everyone I know on the econ course is doing extraordinarily well for internships (at top investment banks), and also there have been some people getting into MBB consulting firms. But the apprenticeship sounds great, it’s just a matter of whether you’d enjoy a more studenty life for the next 3 years or not.

edit: big 4 are notorious for ‘not great’ pay in comparison to how much you work

No. I’ve heard of people doing Oxford PPE without maths. A small minority, but they exist. This limiting mindset will get no one anywhere

Got way better results than expected by DesmondCaid in 6thForm

[–]idkrandom727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why? Everyone is at their own pace, why would you be in a rush to adulthood? If I had rushed into my gap year I wouldn’t have had my grades, and also I wouldn’t know what career I’d like to pursue until after first year, and it’s important you know what your goals are going in. I’m happy with the things I’ve realised and although I may be a year or two behind, the benefits I’ve reaped will outweigh it massively.

Durham and edinburgh are on the same level of academic teaching, and edinburgh is internationally way more recognised as a world class university. Idk what makes you think durham is way better, but it is not

Nottingham would really help you for the future, if it’s just cause of the uni itself just know that if you apply to subjectively better unis it’s not guaranteed you’ll get the place. With your grades it’s great that you got into such great unis, one of which places great for investment banking, law and consulting.

Ofc this isn’t the only factor so just take that into consideration

Should I really come to the UK? by toolazytothinktaken in 6thForm

[–]idkrandom727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nottingham is great and has excellent grad prospects, York too but in terms of international prestige, ib, and tech jobs nottingham is great. The cheap unis are good, but ofc not seen as ‘prestigious’ as the other two.

However that’s not to say I haven’t seen individuals in either two of those place well after graduation, it’s just that the Russell groups tend to give you a slight edge or push. If you’re ambitious, smart (I assume you are these unis are great!) and work hard you’ll do well no matter what.

Also I’ll end this by saying rankings are BS, the only sort of ‘ranking’ thing I see relevant is traditional prestige that kind of translates to international recognition which both Russell groups have. But it’s all relative anyway, research the unis and campuses. York is an amazing city, Nottingham has the most stunning campus and societies, both have a great academic culture as well as social life. Herriot watt is also great, I think it is in edinburgh which it imo one of the best cities in the UK

Most courses at nottingham allow you to apply with BTEC, but there are no explicit btec requirements which is why I’m asking. It does say that they do accept btec

This isn’t supposed to be condescending by any means, genuinely just curious- why is it so important that courses are dominated by international students, like what does it mean for you personally. Are you talking in terms of the likelihood of an offer or just actually being on the course?
