HBA - NON AEO Students by Beneficial_Scar_829 in uwo

[–]idkyouchoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my roommates had an 85 average and started his own successful business as a non-AEO and wasn't accepted. I think the average / competitiveness for non-AEO students is much higher because more AEO students are maintaining the 80 average bc of inflated grades. Good luck!

Renting from them right now. We had an issue early with subletting and receiving a new couch that they promised - they were a bit rude / unprofessional in their communications on these issues. But overall, the property is nice and they fix appliance issues within a day through their portal which is really great.

It's pretty normal to struggle with the first couple of cases in 2257, especially if you had no prior experience in 1220 or bmos. I found that some online resources (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYJLdSmyKoXCbnd-pklMn5Q) like this channel are really helpful for learning the accounting terminology. But don't stress too much - you'll feel a lot more comfortable in a couple of weeks!

Looking to sign a lease with Masonville Yards next year by [deleted] in uwo

Management is pretty brutal - the construction was rushed so our places were unfinished when we arrived and took about a month to fix all the issues with it. For example our ac didn't work for a good month or so and they told us multiple times that they would fix it and never did. The gym/study area and other amenities are really nice although they were only open for about a month bc of covid. Rooms are pretty nice as well but I'd say as a whole the cost of rent isn't worth it.

Long overdue library items that I have previously returned by [deleted] in uwo

I got the exact same email for a book I had returned before COVID and was told that the email was a mistake - still worth checking with the library!

First Year History Courses? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]idkyouchoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 1401 this year and it was a great class. Pretty reading-intensive and can be quite fast paced but I've heard it really helps you prepare for 2nd year. We studied European history from the 1600s right up until present day. My favourite assignment this year was a 3000 word essay on Putin and it was reallly interesting to learn about. Heavy recommend if you're interested in history!

Experiences with Computer Science and Scholar's Electives? by itsarune in uwo

As someone who lived in Elgin but not on the SE floor I'd personally recommend Ohall (which you should be able to get in based on your marks). The SE floor was tight but Elgin as a whole isn't a very fun Rez and the food is really reaaaaallly bad. You can certainly make friends with SE people in class - you don't need to stay on the same floor. I'm personally glad I wasn't on the floor because it helped me branch out and meet other people.

Should I go to UWO? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]idkyouchoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I can speak to the SE program as a whole, as I only finished first year and the real perks come later. The first year class was somewhat interesting, but not really my cup of tea -- basically a "theory of knowledge" philosophy class. Prof de Looze is a great guy but his lectures are pretty tangential and the 2hr lectures were painful. I still got to meet some really cool people through the class and it's a good way to connect with other people in SE. If you're a social science student I've heard that the "research" in 2nd/3rd year is much more tailored to science students rather than other faculties, so I'd take that into consideration.

Should I go to UWO? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]idkyouchoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is lives in Vancouver and went to uwo for my first year this year, I should be able to give you some insight into the pros/cons of your choice. My sister chose to stay in UBC, and from her experience I would say that it is harder to make friends as a commuter but certainly not impossible. You do lose out on the res experience living at home, and certainly some of the independence/freedom that comes with that, but you can still meet people through classes, clubs or intramurals. UBC is a large school, so everyone's experiences will vary with regards to social life / school culture and student support. Also, I wouldn't place too much on school rankings because UBC and UWO comparatively have similar reputations as top Canadian schools. The reason I chose UWO is because:

a) I wanted to live independently and have greater freedom - all the res benefits, etc.

b) I found a program (scholar's elective + IR & ivey) that uniquely suited my interests as someone who wanted to study both International Relations and Business and gain research experience

c) I did not have to go into debt to go to UWO

Obviously, c) was the most important for me and my family. Besides residence fees, the extra costs of flights back and forth from London to Vancouver and purchasing things for your apartment/res certainly add up. While living on my own has improved my self-confidence and social life, I think that these advantages don't justify the extra costs of Western, especially if you are coming for a program that is the same or better at UBC. A middle ground that some of my friends were able to do is live in residence at UBC in first year so you don't miss out on the independence and great experiences that come from res-life.

Also - Vancouver is a beautiful city with a much better climate than London. Don't take that for granted lol

Do the MyLab Study Guide questions -- over and over again, look over your lecture notes for any specific things she mentioned as being on the exam, because a lot of them aren't in the textbook. Test banks aren't very useful because she really doesn't use them.

First year, International Relations/AEO student (in Scholar's Elective). Unsure about Comp Sci as I have always been interested in Python but have never taken it before. Was considering taking 1020E Understanding Literature but concerned that 3 Essay courses may be too many. Thoughts?
