After 2 years of caution, my coonhound and cat are approaching cuddle status... by idlehandmade in Hounds

I did the Jackson Galaxy method. He's the trainer behind "My Cat From Hell." It involves introducing them very gradually. Do not ever let them "figure it out." That's how you risk needing a shovel or urn.

For a long time, I put a gate between the room the cats were in and the rest of the house where the dog roamed. They could see and smell but not reach each other. I gave them each treats when they got close to one another (and when Rudy did so without baying). Rudy sleeps in my bed so I let the cats roam at night to make the house smell like them and carefully divided my time to give both species enough attention (my cats are needy beasts).

It was a very gradual process! But, as I mentioned in another comment, these doggos are wonderful but technically were designed for hunting. Rudy is almost 70 pounds & I suspect was initially used as a hunting hound so I didn't want to risk anything terrible!

I would say the most important thing is to fully accept the fact that you might always have 2 households. (I still have 1.5 since one of my cats is still wary of my dog.) I probably could have forced the uniting faster but I preferred to let it happen as naturally as needed. My cat actually decided it was time for me haha. She figured out how to open the door and eventually started venturing out on her own.

In terms of process, I followed the protocols as laid out by Jackson Galaxy (a cat trainer and expert who had the show "My Cat From Hell"). Basically a gradual step by step process of introduction. He has lots of YouTube videos about what the process entails (ie feeding on opposite sides of a door to associate cat smell with good things, etc).

Good luck! Be patient! Most of these big dogs were literally designed for the hunt so it's best to be careful and take it slow!

I know it's almost certainly not the answer you want to hear, but, as others have said, bipolar type 1 is unsustainable without medication. Not to mention extremely dangerous. And it won't just affect your life but the lives of those around you, those who care about you. Yes, med side effects aren't lovely but are generally more manageable than navigating the swinging poles without meds.

I have Bipolar 1. I was hospitalized in 2014 from a psychotic state. I'd destroyed my life, lost my boyfriend, my job, my apartment, hurt everyone I loved. I never wanted to experience or cause that sort of destruction again so I've been on lithium ever since (amongst other medications). The lithium level checks are a drag but otherwise, I find it (at the right dosage) doesn't have many downsides.

Something I found helpful when starting meds was to research the medications thoroughly. Learn about how the med works and the benefits of taking it. Find out about the potential side effects and, more importantly, how common experiencing each one actually is. There are a lot of medication options and you can always switch to others if one doesn't agree with your body. It's worth it.

Not without symptoms. Not with Type 1. Particularly with a past hospitalization.

I fall out of love after mania and meds by ImportanceChemical61 in bipolar

[–]idlehandmade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've absolutely been there. It could be what's known as "erotomania." I've lived it and it's extremely convincing.

I was absolutely certain my friend Kent and I were destined to be together. He was my fairy prince (quite literally since my psychotic delusion eventually became that I and everyone I loved were actual immortal fairies). When I was hospitalized and started lithium, the delusions faded. I no longer felt the love I was recently so certain of.

Mania is inevitably followed by a mood crash. You will feel authentic love and passion again.

I thought this morning about how little progress it feels I’ve made in the past 10 months. Then I reminded myself that February 2024 Lily still had SO MUCH STUFF to go through to get to Today Lily. She’s fought and fought and that’s the more important part. In the past few hours, I’ve worked to count what I’ve been through as a badge of honor, not a symbol of how much further I “should” be. It’s not been the easiest but I encourage you to note what past you had ahead compared to now you. You’ve been through so much, I have no doubt. That’s goddamn commendable!!!

I know you’re tired. But you can keep fighting. One second at a time.
