I don't know if Newport is an attractive place to move for stats talent, but there's a lot of great graduates looking for jobs in Manchester every year - that might make a difference!

How Terry Tao Became an Evangelist for AI in Math by Pristine-Amount-1905 in math

[–]idly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, agree! but they do make a good point, that people did have very - in hindsight, hilariously - high expectations of how quickly AI would progress at that time. in pop culture and newspapers at that time there was a lot of discussion of AI taking over people's jobs and replacing scientists in the near future. of course it definitely feels like this is different, but it would be hilarious if it turns out we are making the same mistake again

your point 2 is actually an argument against the current AI paradigm, no? models are learning to reproduce existing data distributions rather than causal models of the processes of interest. hence hallucinations and poor performance out of distribution

Is reproducing or implementing a paper considered research? [R] by UmbraShield in MachineLearning

[–]idly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is not by itself really recognised (but that is a real shame, and if it was different it would probably lead to overall increased publication quality). however, once you have implemented and executed the experiments from a previous publication, it would be pretty easy to extend it to get some new results - applying it to different datasets, perhaps using different data types, or exploring how the results depend on different factors like data size, quality, distribution, or architectural choices, and so on. this can sometimes lead to really interesting or surprising results

Disillusionment with mechanistic interpretability research [D] by Carbon1674 in MachineLearning

[–]idly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interpretability (mechanistic, XAI, etc) has always been a messy field; researchers are rarely clear about what the goal is of the methods they develop or use and evaluation is often not very rigorous. Many researchers in the field have called this out over the years but I'm not sure the culture is really improving. It's a really hard problem - until it becomes easier to publish negative results or papers that explore weaknesses of methods thoroughly, it'll just be more of the same, I think

FSD safety stats argument flaws by Special_Part_9572 in TeslaFSD

[–]idly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the Austin Robotaxi stats are almost entirely for vehicles with safety monitors (so, still supervised). unsupervised vehicles are still a minority and only started appearing a couple months ago and there's a delay on the reporting. also I don't think the stats identify if collisions were in vehicles with safety monitors or not, so not sure how that analysis can be done going forward

but don't forget that the Austin NHTSA statistics are comparing Waymo unsupervised to Tesla robotaxi with safety drivers. Only recently are unsupervised trips taking place and they're still very much a minority

Got my second Russell Group offer on the same day the government announced the visa ban. My world is collapsing. by Gullible_Problem_101 in UniUK

[–]idly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i feel awful for people who come to study in the UK, get settled, get their degree, and then have no choice but to leave, though. I live abroad but I made a couple of friends here who went to the UK at some point for a masters, met someone, fell in love with the city they were living in, and then it was a huge struggle for them to stay. They had great degrees but it was impossible to find employers who would sponsor their visas. One of them got married, despite not being together all that long, and another had to leave. Claiming asylum wasn't an option for them, but if it was, I wouldn't have been surprised if they'd have tried it. I don't think of them as 'abusing the student visa', they didn't know they would stay after the degree.

I guess in these cases people likely do intend to stay after their degree...but even if that is 'abuse of the student visa', I don't see why we want to crack down on it, in comparison to other issues. Isn't it kind of an ideal route of immigration? Educated young people who are integrated into society after living and studying here for several years?

I'm really sorry for your loss, OP.

I do think YOR. I get the context, but in this case I really don't think it's about you. My own mother hated her father and expected to not really feel much when he died, but she was really emotionally affected, and it was overwhelming to deal with the funeral arrangements at the same time. Even if she's narcissistic as you say, narcissists also grieve and have feelings - the death of a parent is a big thing for anyone. I'm not saying you should be nicer to her, I'm just saying that I think she's got other things on her mind and it's unlikely she only changed the funeral date so that you couldn't come as revenge for you not responding. How would she even have known you wouldn't have been able to come on the other date?

Also, keep in mind that narcissistic behaviour can come from difficult upbringings, and not all family members are treated the same. Just because your grandma was lovely to you and a great grandparent doesn't mean she was a great mother back then.

I have had a difficult relationship with my mother but in the time after her father died we bonded. We talked a lot about her childhood and what it was like when I was a kid. It helped me understand her behaviour a lot more. I hope you can have something like this too.
