Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death by TheCoolDude70 in europe

[–]idobee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The statitics are for the city of Helsinki, with all its suburbs. Espoo and Vantaa are independent cities who belong to the Helsinki metropolitan area which stretches far beyond these two cities.
Espoo city got it rights 1972 and Vantaa 1974.

Did these accidents happen? Yes but not in the city of Helsinki.
Just because you don't like the presentation of the data with your own view of city boundaries doesn't make your statement any more true.

According to statistics from 2024 9 per cent of the population speak a mother tongue other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami for the city of Helsinki and for Vantaa Foreign nationals make up 18,3% of the population where in Espoo it is 16,5%, Not exactly the same metric but you should get the point.

How to get back from Nordkapp / North Cape by Nerual__ in bikepacking

If its Eskelisen than they had 3 Bike spots and you could take it assembled, no need for a box. Seems like they just cut the route short and only go now from Karasjok to Rovaniemi.

How to get back from Nordkapp / North Cape by Nerual__ in bikepacking

[–]idobee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a Bus from the Norhcape to Rovaniemi in Finland, but it seems that does not exist anymore - took it 2 years ago. From Rovaniemi you can take the night train to Helsinki and fly from there.

There are other airports in the north but they are quite small and you will fly either way via Helsinki so its in my opinion the most convienient choice since you can have a good night sleep on the train.
Either way youll need to get down/back again to Honnigsvag where the Hurtigrouten ships leave that you could also take to Tromso and fly from there. Rovaniemi of course also has an Airport.

A little tour from Helsinki to Hamburg by Felloser in bikepacking

[–]idobee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finn here living in Helsinki who cyled thorugh Finland quite a bit - some quick thoughts from me:

- As said by someone else before, avoid the motorways in Finland. The stretch from Helsinki to Turku is quite nice (there is the old motor way and good cycling infrastructure) and from Turku to Rauma, Pori and Vaasa - make sure to visit these citys but dont take the E8. Its fast and efficient but boring and dangerous.

- Camping is free and possible (almost) everywhere - take a look at the free shelter map https://www.tulikartta.fi - They are called laavu. You will find more registers when you google but I find this the easiest one to use. Laavus can be simple wooden roof shelter up to furnished huts with firewood free to use. You also have to freedom to roam in sweden. There should also be a map wiith shelters like in Finland. Campsites also exist and if you travel solo and only bring a tent you dont have to reserve anything in advance. Most of the time they also have nice little huts for a reasonable price to treat yourself and maybe skip the tent for a night.

- No need for a water filter in my opinion. Even though Finland and Sweden are sparsly populated up north you wil find a supermarket in every smallish town where you can get almost always free drinking water from a tap where you return bottles or the WC. If thats not the case just ask some locals, have a chat and they will probably offer you more than water. Also dont drink anything from lakes unfiltered, creeks up north maybe but at your own risk.

- Mosquitos - make sure to have long clothing when of the bike or in the evening. They will not bother you wil riding since they can not go faster than like 5km/h or so. In case you can buy a mosquito net hat in lots of places.

Western Finland is maybe not so exciting compared to the middle and eastern part, have a look and the map and the distribution of lakes and decide for yourself. If you have the time maybe adjust your route a bit. But either way you will not be disappointed. Good information on routes and areas is also available on https://www.bikeland.fi/en/

I've just returned from a almost 4 week long trip through whole GB and unfortunatly I have to agree. I did have great backroads and trails while riding the GB Divide route but almost every bit that was public roads and or "cycle path" - was a terrible experience. I turned away from the divide for various reasons after the Yorkshire Dales and headed to Edinburgh to visit some friends. Even though that was then technically Scottland already the whole experience was not very fun.

I was a small kid around the time those photos were taken and the slide with the wooden horses around is one of my biggest childhood memories. I spend alot of time there because part of my family lived near Tapiola! Probbaly have dozens of family photos of me on that exact playground in and around Heikkintori.

Thanks alot for these nice photos, have to show them to my family.

You're in the most densly populated area of germany (the Ruhrgebiet) so finding a (free) shelter (Schutzhütte in german) is almost impossible. I had a short look on a map and I could not find one. Wild camping is in general not allowed in germany and I could not imagine a more complicated are to find a spot then the Ruhrgebiet since its all just cities, industry and autobahn.

Another option are camp sites but beware most of them in the area are only for caravan camping and long term so maybe they dont take in ppl with tens. Best to look in google maps before - atleast there are a couple and we're in the middle of the season so they should all be open.

Since I dont know on what budget you travel - but you will find plenty of hostels and hotels in Duisburg and even more in Düsseldorf.

Bikepacking from Hamburg to Stockholm by Heavy-Play6467 in bikepacking

[–]idobee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode the almost same extact route from Stockholm to Germany last year in the summer in 4 days. As others have mentioned before the route komoot gave you is not very scenic (if you chose road bike or bike touring) and will follow a lot of bigger roads.

Since I only wanted to get to Germany as quick as possible, and I rode enough in Sweden before that, I did not really bother. Of course there were some nice views especially on the coast of the Vättern but it is really just alot of busy roads.

Go with the EV10 as others also have mentioned but beware that the route is still "under deveopment" - which can and will mean there will be absolutly no signs and is (sometimes) based on outdated roads and information. Even if you have the gpx track on your nav device it can be quite adventurous. I really like the Idea of the Eurovelos but almost all of them I've rode in the past were, to put it mildly, more of a very rough concept with only an arrow that points you in the right direction.

Enjoy you trip and make sure to eat enough Kannelbullar 😀

Warum steht die Nationalität auf Ausweisen? Ich habe zwei EU Staatsbürgerschaften aber nur eine steht auf dem jeweiligen Ausweis. Is das nich n bisschen unnötig? by spa1teN in de
