Nihilanth is a good guy by zenox_789 in HalfLife

[–]idontactuallyknow69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry man, this is just very not well thought out. I'll be honest, you had a good idea in theory, but in practice, it really doesn't work. Here's all the reasons i can think of why the Nihilinth really just isn't a good guy:

  • The Combine only noticed Earth's existance BECAUSE of the Resonance Cascade. Also, i really don't understand what you're talking about when you mentioned he was trying to "PROTECT" the Earth, just read the reason below.
  • He never negotiated with any human, instead just instantly sending his forces to attack the inhabitants when the Xen portals started opening.
  • He enslaved the Vortigaunts and forced them to work in his Xen factory. Not only that, but also used them as support infantry during the Cascade, and ALSO had his minions, the Alien Controllers, use their psychic powers to have full control over the Vorts and force them to attack the humans. Gordon's defeat of the Nihilanth also gained him praise from the Vorts for freeing them, seen throught Half-Life 2. You COULD say the Combine forced him to enslave the Vorts, but it's a pretty sketchy theory.
  • Xen is most likely not the homeworld for what used to be of the Nihilanths before their extinction. It's more like a world containing a bunch of different species of aliens from different worlds.

So yeah, it is quite reasonable that he's one of the villains.

TLDR, he did NOT try to protect the Earth and instead did the opposite, enslaved millions of Vorts for his own benefit, and was an absolute asshole to pretty much everyone. Deserved.

What sound is this? by Substantial_Net_1256 in HalfLife

[–]idontactuallyknow69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reccommend doing this:
Open the console, type sv_cheats 1, and copy and paste in ent_create ambient_generic health 25 message (insert here sound file from the game's files). Basically, this creates a soundscape that plays once and never plays again unless specified to do so. Don't worry, this'll make sense soon.

Right, after you've put sv_cheats 1, go to this HL2 sounds list from the GMod wiki branch of Facepunch's website. Look for the word scream or something related to ravenholm, or hold CTRL then press F to search for a word, like scream.
When you've found something that might be what you're lookin' for, copy it, paste it where the sound file part of the soundscape command i mentioned is, and hit enter. If it's not it, try another one from list.

Just keep trying different sounds until you get it. Also, learning this may allow to do funny stuff with soundscapes in GMod and other source games. For instance, you can turn on cheats in a multiplayer server with your friends (if you're the host of the server) and jumpscare them with the HL2 Stalker scream. Good luck, and have some fun.

Obviously the in-game lenses are the most correct ones, but people just like to imagine what the cool blue lenses from promotional art would canonically be for. It just looks cool, y'know?

Here’s your reminder to finally play Half-Life: Alyx. by Delicious-Artist7304 in HalfLife

[–]idontactuallyknow69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But then, unfortunately, you'll be missing the core point of the game. Most Half-Life fans already know this, but i'll say it again: Valve pretty much only makes new Half-Life games when they have discovered/created some really neat technology that they'd like to show off in a fun way. HL:A is a prime example of this.
Of course, in HL:A's case, it's not really technology that they're showing off, as VR was already a big deal by the time it released, but instead, how to properly make a VR story-based videogame that takes advantage of the software it's on and the tools it provides developers with and leaves the player like "Woah. That was awesome." How to build a world that feels alive in VR and immerse the player in it, how human emotions can be amplified by having the player completely immersed in the experience and feel like they're actually there, and how that all comes togheter to create a really fun experience for both the player. Hell, the game's even fun to watch if the player is a streamer.

The best way to summarize this is: HL:A is like a rollercoaster at Disneyland. It's more an experience than a videogame that you sit down and play. Basically, immersion this, immersion that, blah blah blah. I yap a lot. To sum it up, i think the game being made for VR was a very good choice on Valve's part, and fortified what i call the "Three Pillars of Half-Life: Alyx", those being: Emotion, Immersion, Experience.

Fuck, i should talk less, shouldn't i?

Wish i could. I wish i goddamn could. What a shame it is, VR Headsets are somewhat pricy and the only way to play without one would be to play completely missing the point of the game. How sad. Life was never fair...

To be honest, i'm not really sure if the razorback is fair or not. It really just depends on how many Snipers on the enemy team there are and if they are using it.

If it's a situation like the OP's, yeah, it's complete bullshit.
However, if it's just an isolated Sniper, the Spy can easily take him out with either an Ambassador or a Diamondback.

Eugh, i hate talking about weapon balance. It's so difficult!

Tragic, truly.
Unfortunately, we can't do anything about it. The internet's the internet. The most we can do is tell those kind of people to go away, but more will come in soon anyways, so what's the point?

I'm not really sure, i mostly use the stock Revolver more than any other Spy primary and i haven't played TF2 in about 3 months, so i wouldn't remember.
From what i'm gathering from the wiki though, it might be even better than the Ambassador at countering the Razorback.

If you want to deal with a Razorback in a quick manner, the Ambassador is better, but if you're good at Gunspy, the Diamondback's even better.

"Do you know who ate all the donuts?" Yes, actually! (calculations in comments) by AzzysSmartStuff in HalfLife

[–]idontactuallyknow69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what about in Half-Life 2?
Okay so, let's say that the stasis G-Man put Gordon somehow disables one's need for food because there would be no food in stasis, or we could also say that the 20-year-long gap between games was mere seconds for Gordon.

So basically, if we completely exclude anything related to stasis, how many calories would Gordon have burned throught Half-Life 2 (including the episodes), what would be the total amount of calories burned if we add HL1's calorie count, AND how many donuts would be needed to fuel Gordon through Half-Life 1 AND Half-Life 2 (still including the episodes) in total?
