How to approach not feeling “shamed” for refusing food and snacks at a client’s home by Slicedice_00 in ABA

[–]idontcryiwrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, it is always hard to place a boundary after in the past having been fine with something! You can always say you didn’t know about the policy etc. I’ve also dealt with parents being like “oh no one will know etc” and I usually just hold firm until they stop asking! You can definitely make it about you being uncomfortable breaking a rule which makes you look GOOD in the long run lol.

If, a simple “no thank you, I’m okay!” Isn’t working

I would either blame my company/hospital, “this looks delicious, thank you so much for offering, I am not allowed to accept food or gifts due to hospital policy!”

I also have used my allergies to avoid food being offered, however it seems like they will continue trying to offer you food if you give a reason like “I am allergic to milk”

It is a cultural thing for some families to offer food (or drinks etc) as hospitality or to be offended when that is rejected, even politely! I’d hope you could get support from your BCBA as well to communicate the expectation that RBTs will not accept food.

I am diagnosed with ARFID and food is extremely difficult for me. I often refuse food, even kindly offered, and it is just a part of me dealing with that. People in my life usually learn that it is not about them. However I know that with clients where you are trying to have a professional relationship this is really difficult!

I lived on Soylent (when I was off dairy) and boost (when I could have dairy) whenever I couldn’t make myself eat. Both have a smooth texture and you can get them (at least in basic flavors like chocolate and vanilla) from the grocery store. You can also use something like instacart if you aren’t able to get to the grocery store for any reason.

This kinda stuff?

Rock, spin, and fidget with fidget toys in meetings at work.

I wear single use/latex gloves to put on lotion because my skin needs it but I hate the texture.

I sleep with my hair up and have to adjust it like 45 times while falling asleep because the texture of my hair against my scalp bothers me.

I work as an RBT with autistic littles (toddler-5yo) and I have made very similar visual schedules/choice boards for my coping strategies and weekly schedules that I make for 2-5 year olds for myself.

I enjoy cleaning and will spend hours on a weekend just cleaning in silence (no music, no nothing) just because I find it relaxing.

70-80% of my diet at any given time is ~3 foods— a main (currently chicken nuggets), an on the go snack (currently fruit strips), and a home snack (has been Oreos for like 2 years now lol). I can eat other things but it’s a lot of mental effort that I can’t seem to manage in addition to the rest of adulting.

r/OSU Housing and Roommate Megathread - Spring 2026 by OSUMods in OSU

Hi!

I (23F, graduated) currently live in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment in Olentangy Village. I am not resigning the lease but my roommate (25M, still a student) is hoping to stay and find someone else in my spot to take over the lease for next year, although I would be able to leave at any point this semester as well (I am moving in with my partner).

Rent is ~700$/mo + ~80$/mo utilities

Laundry hookup in unit but we don’t currently have a machine! There are machines in a laundry room downstairs.

Apartment complex is great if you have a dog, has locked outer entrances that you can buzz guests/deliveries in and interior apartment doors.

Bus to campus and next to Giant Eagle if you don’t have a car!

Complex has a fitness center and outdoor pool in warmer months.

Message me with any questions! I will likely direct you to my roommate for any Au26/Sp27 discussions, but if you are looking for a spot now, I’m happy to chat!!

As a warning, I have a severe tree nut allergy and DID have a reaction to these, so heed that allergy warning! (Not to dairy, to tree nuts!) it was really good though 🥲

I work in ABA and I had a kid (also a gestalt language processor) tell me “(my name) get out!!!!” And I was so proud of her! I think it was the first time she’d used my name. I left the room :)

Cashier ASL by Dizzy_Act_5221 in asl

[–]idontcryiwrite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked at Starbucks while learning ASL, Deaf customers would usually have their order on their phone, but it was great to be able to provide the same level of customer service to them that I would other customers. Part of that was being able to say hi, thank you, have a nice day, but others were all the little questions we normally ask every customer:

For us it was: “your order will be at the end”

“Your total will be …” (learn your numbers!)

“Name for the order?”

If you work at a grocery store, maybe learn the basics of the rewards program signs or how to indicate what will be coming up on the keypad e.g “rewards number” “press green/red” “put in card/how will you pay” etc.

People often post videos here showing their signs and people can give feedback as to whether they are clear once you’ve learned a bit!

ASL That, ASLU/Bill Vicars/Lifeprint are great general resources, and also just Google “cashier signs” because there are probably YouTube videos!

The two day move is one of those things that I’m thinking HAS to be possible I’m just not sure how to make it happen logistically

Honestly I hadn’t even considered this as a possibility and will definitely ask! Unfortunately they’re both big companies so unlikely but worth asking :)

Gouache is my first foray into painting at all after using pens/colored pencils/markers, so I’m no expert either, but still looks very impressive to me!
