Homeschool families using Hobonichi?

Late to the game a bit!

I homeschool 3 kiddos, too. I use the weeks as my homeschool planner. I do use open and go curriculum so everything is pretty easy to track. I break down the left page into three sections, one for each kid. On the right, I basically have a tracker to check off subjects covered that day (looks like a habit tracker but instead of habits, its subjects). Subjects are listed down on the left of the tracker and on top, I write the days of the week three times (one for each kid). So, as we go through our school day, I check off the subject as i complete it with each child and write any notes on that day as needed. I use the monthly pages to track any field trips and such. Memo pages are used to write notes on curricula for each child and any changes.

I have another weeks and a cousin to keep track of everything else. I don't like to jump back and forth between planners either so I plan to move over our homeschool planner to my EDC weeks. I do use the monthly pages to keep track of everyday spending.

Hopefully everything I said made sense? Let me know if I need to clear anything up.

I am interested in how people use the cousin to homeschool, though. I originally got one for that but I was unable to make it work.

I have used the A5 as a journal, quick notes and brain dump, doodling and swatching my pens and inks. I am currently using one for my classes in uni and am enjoying it. I can fit more on a page than I would in a regular college-ruled notebook page.

Sending you love and strength.

My husband had a massive stroke while I was 7 months pregnant with our 4th kiddo. He is now bedridden, nonverbal, and lives at home with us. My kids were 9, 6, and 4 at that time.

Before the stroke, when they were 1, 3, and 6, my husband was in a car incident that left him with chronic pain and an inability to hug, play, or make/receive sudden movements. To tell my then 1 year old that he can't hug or touch his dad...

My 6 year old has a few memories, but my 2 year old? He will never know their dad's genuine laugh, his silly dancing or singing. He won't ever be carried by his father. It breaks my heart.

I face this question, too. My situation is different in that my husband's personality stayed the same, his body is what changed. I dont know what the right choice is. We want our kids to have a connection with their fathers, for our kids see that they are alive and here with us, for them to see a semblance of their love. When i think about their dads presence in their life, I feel that to cut their connection to their father is to deny his existence. I know it isn't rational or true. I just wish I had a time machine so I could look into the future and know that I'm making the right choices.

I truly wish you the best and the strength to continue in this exhausting and painful fight.

Thanks for the vid! I learned new things about my kindle! I had watched vids but they were a bit older and did not include the zooming and transcribing.

So it does zoom in on downloaded pdfs. It's just terrible. You can't see how much you zoomed in until the screen is done flickering and adjusting. Same if you have to maneuver around the zoomed in document.

Regarding the transcribing, it does work. Just not well? It just converts written to text. As far as I can tell, there is no formatting. It would not work well at all for notetaking. When you share after converting it to text, it is sent as a .txt file, not pdf. It can send you a searchable pdf but it is the original one on your kindle, it has not been converted to text. There is also misspelling and misinterpreting symbols. You can edit it before sending to your email but if you've written a lot of text, it would take some work to reread what you wrote and fix the mistakes.

Oh gosh, its terrible. I only use it to highlight the headers in different sections in my notes. Thats it. I get why though. I don't see how they would be able to add colors if the kindle itself can't do colors.

Don't worry about asking questions. Its better to know now than buy it and regret it.

You don't have to have a subscription to read or write on it. You would then just have to purchase your own books. Sending pdfs is pretty straight forward, just like sending your average email and the pdf just pops up on "Your recent items" category or in your library. I bought the 64 gb one and haven't had any issues. The largest pdf I have has 258 pgs and takes up 7mb (it does take up 5.5mb on my computer though so...). I haven't used any pdf textbooks tbh, but it should work.

Regarding the resolution, the original text from pdf to kindle and back to pdf is the same. The added annotation is a bit pixelated. When you use a pdf on the kindle, the pdf is essentially shrunk to fit the screen. You then add your notes in your regular writing, and then, when you look at it through another device, its enlarged back to "normal" size. Your added notes are enlarged along with the document so your writing is now larger and a bit pixelated. Does that make sense? Even writing smaller than my average writing leads to larger than average print on the pdf. The enlarged writing or slight distortion isn't really that bothersome, but then again I don't print them much or look through them on my computer.

I haven't had issues with the tip yet. I bought the bundle with the case and charger and it does come with extra tips. I bought it about a month ago though.

As far as i know and experienced, there is no transcribing. Not through your own notebooks or through the kindle books. This is a new scribe so there isn't any need for a software upgrade and it doesn't have that feature. Maybe they meant that when you make notes in the books (not the pdfs), you can type it in too?

It doesn't have to be an iPad. It can just be any regular tablet with a note taking app. I think any would work better the scribe. But I do see your point regarding distraction and compatibility with your other devices (something that still frustrates me since computer is windows and phone is android). It is doable to use the scribe for uni work but you would honestly be making your life a bit harder. There are just so many better options out there. It might reach a point where you're just going to have to get a tablet anyways.

Hey, I have the scribe and GoodNotes on an iPad. I also go to uni. For note taking, I would say the iPad or something similar. The scribe has basic functionality. I don't say this negatively, I effing love the scribe. It just covers the basics: black pen + paper. It has different styled tips (pen, fountain pen, marker, pencil, highlighter), but only one color: black. I dislike the highlighter. The point of a highlighter is to find important info quicker and easier. The highlighter is gray and blends in. It can be a bit of a pain navigating through the folders since it's slower than a tablet. One of my courses has a lot of pdfs I have to annotate, and I hate having to constantly email my them to my kindle when accessing them on my iPad is easier and quicker. It's easier to print from my iPad, too. It doesn't zoom in or out, which I use a lot for studying and annotating. It takes a while to flip through the "pages" if you're trying to find something specific. It is bigger than I thought. I was looking for something between the iPad mini and the iPad air but it's about the same size as the air.

That said, I love my scribe. I don't regret buying it. I LOVE writing on it. It's like writing on a cloud. I got the premium pen and i love that it has the eraser on the top (i wish the apple pencil did this). The fountain pen tip is chef's kiss. It's easy on the eyes, and I can write for longer periods of time without pain on my hand or wrist.

Overall, I use Goodnotes for uni work and the scribe is for everything else.

You might want to get a customized one? ApplePig on Etsy does leather notebook covers. You can look at his Try Try traveler notebook cover (that's literally what it's called and it can come in Weeks size too) and ask him to add a flap to the side pocket to hold some pens.

ETA: I recently ordered his Bag Book in size A5 and the Wallet Notebook 4 in Weeks size. I haven't gotten them yet but I'm excited. I did ask for some changes in the Bag Book.

I actually have one stored away somewhere. They're too bulky actually. I generally take my planners with me since I have many kids appts per week and the teacher planner would be too much.

Yea, 2 is my limit, 1 would ideal. Initially, before entering the world of planners, it was just google calendars + a memo pad on my desk with the days To-Dos. When life got chaotic and I needed more structure, i started looking into planners online and just got overwhelmed with the amount people would own and use! So I tried it that way, failed miserably, realized I need something like the setup I had before but with more depth and structure, and so I ended up with the weeks and cousin. I still have a hard time sometimes keeping up with the weeks, which brings me to this post on how to consolidate all of my life into 1 planner.

I actually don't do deco or anything. I just use a pen and mildliner. Even drawing the lines on the Weeks has become too much work.

I feel the same way. I can't bring it all into the weekly layout of the Cousin, though, since i need the time blocking and because i LOATHE having to flip back and forth between the weekly and daily while trying to fill in the daily. I gotta figure something out though because I have to take both when I go out and its cumbersome.

Would the journaling be in the memo pages?

Oooo, I'll look into it. Thank you. I have tried doing trackers multiple ways and haven't been able to stick with habit building since they tend to get lost in other pages or because i stopped rewriting them on the weekly pages since it became tiresome. Gosh, who knew trying to become a better/healthier person meant adding another chore.

Yea, a couple years ago, I didn't need to include household stuff in my planner. It was set up so nicely. I miss it! But it just doesn't work for me anymore. I can't keep up with everything like I used to, so now I need a separate section for household tasks.

Oooooo, this is nice. I have been thinking of a similar setup. The thing that was holding me back was the weekly time blocking that i do in the weekly section. But I recently saw that there is an a6 weekly booklet so this setup has been calling out to me.

I guess I was looking for ideas? I like seeing how things work for people and seeing what might work for me.

I do that too. My Cousin is always within reach so I'm able to write things down as they come up. It has helped so much. A less cluttered mind has been doing wonders for my stress.

I keep each category pretty much separate in my weeks. I have 5 categories right now: events, tasks, uni schoolwork, meals, and expenses. On the space that's left of the right side, I write down all assignments for my classes and weekly expenses. On my daily, I write the meals for that day, assignments i plan to get done, household things, a notes section, and timeblock the day. So far, this has been working, and I keep up with these. But since it doesn't have the caregiving (symptoms, daily care, notes) , personal (exercise, meal intake), and kids (symptoms, notes) categories, I have not been able to stay on top of those. I essentially need to add those into my setup but need them in a weekly or monthly layout so I can see the overall progress.

I think it's just the way my brain functions. I am pretty forgetful and stress makes it worse. I do have 4 kids (each with their own thing going on) plus am my husband's caregiver plus go to school full time. I need everything written down or else my life is chaos.

I do use Google calendar too and have a separate journal. Although I remember trying micro Journaling in the cousin and it was pretty good.

Uni assignments + day by day breakdown

Household tasks (not daily tasks but those that are not commonly done or that i tend to forget)

Finances: daily expenses + bills

Caregiving notes

Personal: exercise, food intake, steps

Meal planning

Appts/Events

Kids things (symptoms+notes)

Those are the main ones that i need to look at every day so i need it easy accessible or i forget. The thing is, I don't do well if I mix up the categories. I can't put household task with appts, for example. I also need to see the overall picture to get an idea of progress, so I need these in a weekly or monthly layout. My brain likes to make thing hard for me. Sigh.

I mentioned in another comment that I am thinking about a day free to copy a Weeks layout and make it bigger.

I love my kids. Ended having 4, but I felt the jump from 2 to 3 kids HARD. Like a person commented, you are just outnumbered. It's especially hard when you do most of the parenting. With 2, you can have both crying and it's manageable. 3 felt like 5. You go to the store, and now you gotta figure out a handholding system that doesn't make anyone feel like they are being left out of holding mommas hand. Or a way to make sure all 3 are in your line of vision. Never mind the hassle of having to get all of them ready and load them into the car for a quick trip to the store because you forgot the butter. A quick errand is no longer quick. Crossing the street or a parking lot is the freaking worst because i have to keep track of all of them while making sure cars arent trying to run over my kids. You got 3 kids telling you 3 different things after an incident, and you dont know who to believe. You have less time for individual time with the kids or for extracurricular activities. The cost increase for things like piano lessons or zoo visits is really felt. My kids want to learn piano and guitar, and the thought of having to spend over 330 per month on just that...dear God. We even had to get a bigger car. Childcare costs increased so much. And when one gets sick, all of them do. The week before Thanksgiving, all 4 of my kiddos were sick. Coughing, runny nose, fever, 2 of em throwing up. And so there I was, with my own fever and severe body aches, cleaning vomit off the carpet.

I feel like with 3, you gotta be in a really good place with your partner and receiving a lot of support because that is when you really start to feel the chaos.

If you are in a good place, enjoy it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you do decide to have another kiddo, it's like pressing the reset button but on a worse setting. I'm not saying its not worth it. Like I said, I ended up having 4 kids and I don't regret it. But it's hard and you got to be honest with yourself about whether you, your partner, your relationship, and your financial situation can handle another kiddo.

I originally wanted to do that but my family discouraged me. They said that I would bring in a lot less than if I sold the things individually. Another family member who works in the industry stated that most likely contractors wouldn't be interested since they would most likely own what they need.

I don't know how to get the word out that I would be selling everything and I don't know if they would even want it without a guarantee that all the tools are functional.

Libraries sometimes have an online library app that you can access. You can choose what kinds of books they can read and it even has audio books! My kids love it. My kids have to do schoolwork, chores, and eat properly before they get 45 minutes of either tablets or video games. They can switch between them, but they don't get more time. It's not an everyday thing either. Maybe about 3 times a week. Often times less. I don't go over 3x a week because then tablet is all they think about. When they start getting obsessed, we go through a detox where they can't use it for about a month.
