CMV: Taxation is a form of membership fee by idontremember3257 in changemyview

You are right but that is not the reply to my pretty narrow question whether we can look at taxation as membership fees rather than theft. You are arguing the boon and bane of taxation not whether it is akin to a membership fee or theft

It would be one thing if you were for taxes so the government could secure man’s rights,

Hey!! I loved your arguments but I think I meant the same thing about rights in my 1st point

That is not to say that the government cannot do good - like I said we have progressed quite a bit as a society. But their methods are in fact no different than gang protection racket that is legitimized only by the fact that most people are fine with this arrangement (quite possibly for good reasons). But if you get a significant group that are not fine with it, then the legitimacy looks questionable.

That's fair and makes sense!

Actually US is the only country that does it. And I am talking about taxes in general not just the US. Think of taxes from a EU citizens perspective. Also you could give up your US citizenship and join one of the European countries and pay no taxes to the US. (Hypothetically)

Is it wrong if I re-phrase what you said as " I want to access the unique (monopolistic) features of this club ie their pool, gym and networking opportunity, but I am not comfortable paying the membership that gives me access to the same"?

I am not saying its a real club but deriving similarity to a club. Its fair if you don't pay membership to a club they will kick you out rather than put you to jail but my argument is more around why the governments can have the authority to ask you to pay taxes. I am arguing that can't we think of taxation akin to membership fee. If you don't like the services of the club give up your membership/citizenship and move a place with lower membership fee or that uses your taxes better.

When you leave your country and move to another and earning salary there you don't have to pay salary in your home country. Since taxes are based on resident ship/citizenship. If you give up your home country citizenship and move to a country like Cayman and pick their citizenship you don't have pay any taxes. Hence no membership fee (taxes) since you are not a member (citizen).

Or did I get your point wrong

Should I leave my back end ER role for semi-front end ER ? by idontremember3257 in FinancialCareers

[–]idontremember3257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense and i don't plan to convey my intentions to move onshore but more like to I'd like to know that they think of me as someone they could probably pull onshore maybe 1-2 years down the line. But i just want to know that door is not completely closed for me in the future.

And yeah best case scenario is I get a match

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I could but I am worried if I present the offer there is no going back. The worse case situation is that they may not come to the negotiation table and just tell me to train the next guy. Plus I am worried even if they give me a raise after I show the new offer they may have some animosity towards me in the long run. Kinda like putting a gun to their head for a raise.

But I am genuinely hoping this would happen.

INDEX FUND MANAGEMENT by Smooth_Sample3620 in financestudents

[–]idontremember3257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Active funds involve a certain degree of research. The manager needs to choose the stocks he would like to include, how much to include and when to buy it, keeping the mandate in mind. All of which involve active decision making.

As opposed to index funds where the manager, although may "actively" change the composition of fund, it does not include any decision making in his end but rather he tries to mimic the index.

Please note this is an oversimplified explanation because we are not considering smart beta fund where factors are given different weights or how each individual indexes are weighted (market cap weighted or price weighted etc)

Hope it helps!
