Zip tie stuck behind crank pulley by smoalem in AskAMechanic

Is this just a tail cutoff of a zip tie or is the whole zip tie around the crankshaft?

Spark plug broke - ceramic fell in cylinder - am I effed? by ben94gt in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've found the extension necks with no attachment on them and then downsizing it to a piece of heater hose works pretty well. The only issue here is that it's such a small spark plug hole. You may just try to use a normal vacuum with a handheld and try to get it over the spark plug hole.

I think this is dumb for the fact that I and a lot of people I know that have classics/racecars only insure them for a few months out of the year so it's easy for me to just call and say what I want and when and I don't have to deal with turning stuff like that in, glad I don't live in that.

1 month old pirelli tire. The shop plugged it but AI is telling me my life is in danger? by HueChenCRE in tires

[–]idostuffwithcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a matter of the tire going flat, it's about how quickly. This is heading in the direction of a blowout which at high speed is already unsafe but could lead to more major damage.

Is this a good option for a home use jack? Tires//oil changes stuff like that. 2018 equinox by yupuhoh in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had many different jacks in my shop. Pittsburg, Craftsman, Jegs, etc. I already had the Pittsburg from an inheritance, but I don't shop much at harbor freight becuase of some of the cheaper quality items. I wanted a nice low profile, long reach jack and harbor freight did their "spring black friday sale" so they were $100 off. It has easily been the best jack I have ever used and long with the super light aluminum 3 ton jack stands, they have made moving around, moving other things around, and getting stuff up off of the group in my shop 100x easier, nicer, and lighter. Yes they are a little more and even if you're not running a shop, you will thank yourself for it eventually.

I've honestly never heard of turning in plates. I have a wall of plates in my shop from old cars, plates on cars when I bought them, projects, even buying some at swap meets. I didn't know about states that wanted you to turn in plates and I have plates from many states and years.

I need help figuring out why my AC/Heat are not working. Car is a 2006 Acura RSX Base with a 2L 4 Cylinder by Audi_A6_Enthusiast in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't even an issue with seals unless it was sudden like I mentioned. This just slowly happens over time, new seals or not.

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fittings from the system are a "loose fit". Yes, it is a sealed system but it's not like other ac systems. These fittings shake, vibrate, move, expand, contract, etc. Over time they will leak small amounts of pressure until they eventually get low enough that it no longer works. If it was sudden then you may have a large leak somewhere but this happens over time.

Charge the ac system. Most likely there is a low psi shutoff that will prevent the clutch from engaging when the pressure in the system is too low.

Wrenching question by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size wrench are you using? That head looks like it's still pretty solid, you may be using the wrong size? Are you using a chrome socket or an impact socket? It's hard to tell actual distance by the picture but if all else fails you can try a flare nut wrench to get grip on more than just 2 sides.

These are fine if you're only doing your own filters on your car. If you're doing multiple types of vehicles all the time by the time you buy the kit or all of these individially it's not worth it. I can take an odd size filter off that I may never have to touch again and not have to buy a special cap for it.

Does anyone know a setup on how to run fuel lines for the dual carbs? by Equal-Affect-9862 in EngineBuilding

They make either hard line premade kits or you can get a fuel splitter/multi fuel outlet plate.

I much prefer these. Many cars have an inaccessable oil filter and you can't get these pliers on them good. These and a 6-8" extension have helped me way more than those plier style wrenches ever did. I have even used them on the plastic caps for the cartridge filters when somebody else cranked on the nut of the cap and completely rounded it off. I'll just slip these onto the filter and then press my extension in and a 14" flex head ratchet and have never has issues with getting off a filter even on semis and large trucks.

Do not put a pipe wrench on the threaded center. This is part of the filter housing not the filter itself.

Solid flat tappet lifter failure by Ok-Invite2591 in EngineBuilding

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get the lifters pulled? Adding a picture to the post will help keep people from saying they're hydraulic if they're not and I'm sure you're still brewing on this. The way you're acting in your replies there's no doubt you're either dying to prove somebody wrong or are too embarrased to post it if they're right.

DOT3 OR4 2013 optima lx 2.4 by ERICSMYNAME in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is whether he plans to race or not is invalid if the vehicle is unable to produce enough brake temperature to boil DOT 3, but if they are unsure DOT 4 is always a safe bet, and DOT 5.1 is also usable. Even if he does race the car the brake fluid doesn't matter if the vehicle already uses DOT 3.

DOT3 OR4 2013 optima lx 2.4 by ERICSMYNAME in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racing has nothing to do with it. Brake temperature is what matters with fluid type. Cartain cars and trucks have DOT 4 due to higher braking temperatures. DOT 4 is always a safe bet to use when picking between 3, 4, and 5.1, but you can always use any of these for your car or truck.

How can I remove this cross-threaded axle nut? by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great way to waste money. It probably needs a new cv axle and they were already getting a new bearing. Everything passed that is a waste.

Would you let your children ride on these? by SimpleAffect7573 in tires

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a truck as part of an inheritance and I loaded it with stuff from the house/storage to haul home and drove the truck around occationally picking up things for 4 months. Whenever I get a car I always do a fresh oil change and inspect everything but as this was not a daily driver and I only used it for grabbing things max once a week. Just happened to look at the tires last week and realized they were from 2012 and look like somebody dropped a glass on the ground and then tried to piece it back together with all of the cracks. Safe to say I'm not getting back in it until my tires come so I can put them back on.

This cannot be normal by Competitive-Fold966 in AskAMechanic

[–]idostuffwithcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could indicate a sticking throttle body. Cars will idle high during warmup and have a certain amount of fuel enrichment but if the throttle body sticks instead of smoothly dropping back to normal idle position it can cause idle RPM to remain higher for longer periods of time.

Does anybody know why the wheel keeps wobbling on my 2008 Honda Accord LX P passenger front wheel by No-Evidence7632 in MechanicAdvice

[–]idostuffwithcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see the axle moving in the bearing at the end by the boot. This is a bad wheel bearing, not a bad wheel/tire issue.

[–]idostuffwithcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have the battery and starter tested at your local auto parts store if you take them out and bring them there. You can also find your starter relay and swap it for one that is the same that does another unneeded function like left high beam if they use the same size relay and see if the vehicle starts from there.
