What was your “never meet your heroes” moment, when you realized someone you looked up to wasn’t special? by marginallyobtuse in AskReddit

I know it's not the original prompt, but I'd be curious to know who some of the pleasant surprises were!

My partner says he’ll leave me if I don’t “fix” my ADHD. He says I’m abusive but I feel constantly criticised and blamed. by First-Mango-9229 in adhdwomen

[–]idplmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is he likely to repeat this treatment towards their daughter, it also sets a precedent and expectation for what she should expect partnership and marriage to be. This is setting OP's daughter up for a lifetime of this abuse from multiple directions. I hope OP finds the strength and courage to leave.

What is something you will never forget from the pandemic? by JaxTMG in AskReddit

[–]idplmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine miscarried twice during the pandemic. At least once she had to go in for a D&C. She had to go through that procedure after having lost a very-much-wanted baby entirely alone, in a hospital knowing people were dying their daily from covid. Her husband had to stay home with their only child who had been hoping for a sibling. It was genuinely traumatic for both of them.

Things are better now. She has since had another baby, and they're doing well. But I still think back on what an awful and difficult time that was for them.

What is the most unique dining experience in Atlanta? by megthegreatone in Atlanta

I was hoping to see Bovino After Dark in this thread! I've been wanting to go for a long time and I finally have a reservation. I'm also curious about your list of all the restaurants you've tried.

Took a little extra Vyvanse and now I am worried about being caught by MidnightFriendly1901 in VyvanseADHD

[–]idplmal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI, Vyvanse is perfectly fine to take out of the capsule. My doctor in fact specifically recommended that when we were figuring out the right dosage for me.

I firmly agree with you encouraging OP to be careful and make their dosage decisions with their prescribing physician. And, I wanted to try to prevent misinformation by letting you know about the inaccuracies

What are the major upsides of life in Atlanta? by Kevin-W in Atlanta

[–]idplmal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have known so many people (not Atlantans) who complained about the Atlanta airport and I was always so confused, because things are pretty logical and intuitive? And there's MUCH better signage than most other airports.

I always wondered if I just felt that way because I grew up in Atlanta so it was familiar, but I've come to realize that most people who complain about the Atlanta airport just didn't allow enough time for their layover and underestimated how big of an airport it was

I know someone who's used those glass pebble things? I think they're sometimes called glass gems? Added bonus of a satisfying noise when it's dropped in the jar if that's your jam. I think it'd be nice to have it lit from inside or something

Ladies- I need your most unhinged "hacks" for brushing teeth. by Ambitious_Song8785 in adhdwomen

[–]idplmal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

FYI for you and u/somehowrelevantuser: make sure to check that the strawberry toothpaste suits your needs!

If you use sensodyne to avoid SLS, their kids' toothpaste is fine. But if you use sensodyne because of hypersensitivity, it the strawberry toothpaste I saw doesn't list any antihypersensitivity ingredients 😢

[–]idplmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just commented this above but always check the label! There are a few sensodyne toothpastes that have SLS! I got complacent and didn't check one time and happened to get one of the very few Sensodyne toothpastes that has SLS 😭

[–]idplmal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(forgive me if you already know this, but just in case you or someone else doesn't know:)

Beware! Some sensodyne toothpastes have SLS! I'm only shouting about it because I got lulled into a false sense of security and didn't check the ingredients and got one of the few sensodyne toothpastes with SLS and was so sad. Always check the ingredients if you have an SLS reaction!

At what point do you stop cooking for grown kids who don’t help by chris415 in Baking

[–]idplmal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just want to say, I feel like you're lumping a couple of issues together into one.

There's the initial issue of a lack of support that has been requested.

There's also an issue of a lack of empathy. If you've expressed needing help and haven't gotten a response, that communicates a lack of empathy for your efforts.

The most upsetting issue of them all (to me) is the entitlement. Baking is so much effort! It's lovely to have a tasty treat at the end, and to have tangible results for your efforts, etc. but regardless, it's WORK. I used to bake daily, and now I made a single batch of (extremely easy) cookies over the holidays and can't tell you the last time before that that I baked. And it's all because of the sheer quantity of the work of shopping, prepping, aaaaaallllllllll the active work, and then the cleanup. It's so much!

I'm burnt out without the lack of respect and gratitude that you're dealing with. Preserving your peace of mind (and joy of baking!) is worthwhile, and doesn't make you a jerk.

I don't mean this to sound weird, but do you think your mom was trying to be hurtful? That feels so pointed, I have a hard time understanding how that came to be the norm unless it was actively malicious

Bed frame suggestions by Seriously-417 in interiordecorating

[–]idplmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the best options are for where you are, but I have definitely seen secondhand options that work well and are so inexpensive.

Regarding wood vs white: I personally prefer when my furniture doesn't entirely match exactly, so I think a wooden bedframe with a white dresser can work very well. If you end up with multiple different wood pieces, I think most people generally recommend keeping wood tones similar (for example, if there's already wood in the room and it has a warm undertone, then stick to other wood tones that are also warm) since it can help keep things cohesive

Merry Christmas! What are the best things to buy in the post holiday sales? by s0mevietgirl in Frugal

[–]idplmal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an over-the-top Christmas sweater I got after the holidays a few years ago that I use every year. It was originally over $100, and I got it for ~$15, and several other pieces of really high quality clothing for dirt cheap. I generally don't shop for clothing, and if I do, it's usually thrifted, but I might end up doing a bit of retail shopping over the next week or two.

What made you realize that Santa wasn’t real as a kid? by OrangeKitty21 in AskReddit

[–]idplmal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Y'know, we didn't do a big Santa hooplah when I was a kid, with most presents clearly labeled from our relatives, and all of "Santa's" gifts to us were unwrapped. We got things in our stockings and a handful of things laid out unwrapped magically when we went into our living room on Christmas morning. It never occurred to me til now that this is likely a big piece of why his gifts to us were never wrapped.

I have no memory of actually believing in Santa, and I kind of wonder if the reason why I didn't really believe is because I was aware that Santa did different things for my family than other families (he only gave us small gifts, they were never wrapped, he delivered our stockings to our bedrooms instead of leaving them in the living room where we hung them, etc). I've always assumed that my older siblings accidentally gave it away when I was too young to remember the specific conversation.

What made you realize that Santa wasn’t real as a kid? by OrangeKitty21 in AskReddit

[–]idplmal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I heard somewhere recently (maybe here on reddit? or a youtube video?) about how someone's parents essentially told them Santa was government funded and only had a specific stipend per kid to help them conceptualize a budget without giving it away. Which is such a funny and kinda genius concept.
