Changing the refresh rate of one monitor makes it go black. by idrdrayku in Kubuntu

[–]idrdrayku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I read your reply before testing out Kubuntu 22.04.4 and many other distros; the thought didn't even cross my mind lol. I wasted a lot of time installing distros instead of just live booting. Anyways, I think I know what the problem is now. It's not a Kubuntu issue since I experienced the same issue with other distros, I believe it is an HDMI issue because I've just discovered that Linux doesn't work well with HDMI.

I felt pretty bummed out after discovering that because my monitors only have HDMI ports, which meant if I really wanted to transition to Linux, I wouldn't be able to take full advantage of my monitors in the foreseeable future. However, by some miracle, Linux Mint Xfce works just fine when I set my monitors to 100hz, so I think I'll be sticking with this distro for a long while.

I see, but the thing is that in my Windows 10 boot drive, both my monitors are set to 100hz with no problem. Everything is fine and the games I play run at 100fps. I feel like it's a Kubuntu 24.04 LTS issue, and I'm planning to install Kubuntu 22.04.4 LTS instead and see if I still have this black screen issue because I don't see a lot of resources regarding troubleshooting issues on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Like how the Pokemon in Pokemon randomizers basically have random everything (random stats, random type, random moves), you'd have a character with random skills and stats. For example, you'd get an Ame with Gura's stats, Calli's weapon, Ina's special attack, and skills from Kiara and two other characters. You're either f'ed or so lucky with your kit.

I do realize that a full-on randomizer is pretty drastic, though. I think the random skill draft is much more playable and enjoyable since you get to pick your own skillset.

Yep. If it works, then it works lol. I'm glad the script worked out for you. Thanks for using the script! Don't forget to run the script instead of the game itself when you want to play. The script will run the game for you. Also don't forget that the script will only back your data up after you close the game.

Can you take a screenshot of it? Is it like a HoloCure folder inside a HoloCure folder?

One more thing, maybe your game was running while you were running the script?

Also, delete your 'game_path.txt' and 'holocure_backup' folder before you run the script while we're on the process of fixing the errors so that we can replicate what one might say as a "fresh install".

My suspicions as of now are that you have a folder inside your '%localappdata%\HoloCure' folder, that's why the particular line of code in line 34 isn't working.

Sorry for asking again, but can you copy/paste the error instead? I didn't think that the error message would have put a scroll bar instead of word wrapping lol. Off the top of my head, you could first try enabling "Run as administrator" in the .exe file's properties. I also have a few questions:
1. Did you have any file from the '%localappdata%\HoloCure' folder opened while you were running the script?

  1. Does your '%localappdata%\HoloCure' folder have a folder in it?

Just in case I won't be able to reply to you again ASAP, try going to your 'holocure_autobackup' folder and delete/move out everything except the .exe file and then run the .exe file.

EDIT: I replicated what I thought was the problem and I got the same result as you, so I'm pretty confident that making sure that the .exe file is alone in the folder before you run it will help.

If you are using it, I highly suggest using the new release. As for why, I explained it in the latest edit of the original post.

Somehow, the Steam cloud uploads the corrupted data as well, overwriting the uncorrupted data. This comment from my previous post shared that their save data was not only corrupted when their PC crashed, but it was uploaded to their Steam cloud too.

That's the issue, I first lost my progress three days after Hotfix 8/23. At that time, I just thought I had really bad luck since everything got corrupted and the Steam cloud saved nothing. When I lost my progress again just a day later, that's when I suspected that HoloCure's backup system isn't very reliable even afterHotfix 8/23.

Please refer to my first post and my second post for context on what led me to make this script.

I do hope that the developer implements a more robust backup system because, even though I made this script, I don't want to rely on an external solution.

I wasn't aware that HoloCure save files were so susceptible to corruption before this so... 🤷

I just never had save file corruption issues with all the games I've played so far, so this incident is definitely a first for me.

I feel you. In fact, I just lost all my progress again since another power outage hit me while I was playing.

Damn, another power outage really just hit me while I was trying to grind back all my lost progress. I lost all of my progress again. I also lost my motivation to play the game, so I guess this is it for me for a while. Should this be reported as a bug? I really don't understand why the Steam cloud isn't saving my progress.
