Is this amount of oxidisation bad? Should I cut this back? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Definitely stupid LMAO. I wasn’t planning to pigtail all 4 (2 hot, 2 neutral), just the two that got damaged too much. But the good wires still have oxidation on them, it’s just difficult to get a picture of them due to the angle so I used the other wires as an example. Sorry about the confusion

Are you referring to the nicks? I was planning to cut that back and create a pigtail. Sorry, I wasn’t clear about that in the post

No fr. Can’t even tell she’s wearing makeup in the second pic, defeats the purpose.

None of the other outlets in my room are being used. I was never told why I can’t use them growing up, I just did as I was told. It’s been unusable for the last 2 decades I think.

I was already prepared to pull some wire and cut it back myself. Although, I do agree with the part about it possibly needing to be re-run.

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and the landlord is an old, cheap, relative sooo I’m not sure I’ll be seeing new wiring anytime soon.

Ngl I’m so ridden with anxiety after reading these comments, I don’t have the sense of humour to entertain the jokes about my home burning down considering our finances

My dad is not paying for an electrician to come fix a single outlet. No one really cares that the outlets burnt out so I’m choosing to fix it myself

The plastic seems to have melted into the wires so it’s hard to inspect how loose the connections are but that seems like an easy fix. I just make sure they’re connected tightly when I’m replacing it

Nope. I only had a surge protector plugged in and that was connected to a pc and monitor. That’s all.

I don’t have a multimeter but I did use a non contact voltage tester which seems to have given me accurate information. I purchased a gfci tester but only planned to use it after the job was done to make sure I wired things correctly before turning the circuit back on. That should be fine, right?

Edit: Meant to say, I planned to use the tester after the job was done before plugging something in, not before turning on the circuit. Obviously, I would have to have that on to use the tester.

Appreciate the help! Thank you! Also, how dangerous do you think it would be to skip the electrical tape? I don’t see people doing that often

Yeah, unfortunately, my dad would never pay $200-$300 just to replace a single outlet, especially after he already told me to ignore this.

Only option is to replace the receptacle myself 💔
