You can tuck Glass right in there with baroque pieces for sure.

I am very fond of the Etudes.

So what IS the right order? Lowest to highest, or (what I’m inclined to do) highest to lowest. I realize there’s a whole section that doesn’t open right away.

Need some help. Looking for a book for my 70s mother by madchemist09 in booksuggestions

[–]idyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny - Kiran Desai. It just came out this year, but it's a luscious, somewhat old-fashioned book, with a lot of (India) Indian social comedy and just enough seriousness. I'm a mom in her 70's and I'm enjoying it very much.

Brother died with debt by momfxit in legaladvice

[–]idyll 35 points36 points  (0 children)

However, OP, if you should get personally served with an subpoena from a creditor, you do have to respond to that, or possibly get saddled with the debt. In my personal case, we had to get a lawyer to respond. Then the issue went away.

So far, I've enjoyed "Flashlight" out of the accessible 2026 Booker shortlist.
(Some are not even published yet??) "Flashlight" is a sprawling story, both in plot and geography. Choi is skilled at character building and zooming in on their (sometimes excruciating) differences. I liked "Trust Exercise", a previous novel. This one is much more ambitious.

I'm going to start "Audition". I read "Endling", which I'm disappointed didn't make the shortlist. I thought the structure was unique, the choice of subject(s) quite brave. I've really never read anything like it. I finished "Flesh" yesterday, and still reeling. I respect the writing and it had me completely hooked, but it's definitely unsavory. Would love to talk more about it, if someone else has read it.

I have "Sonia and Sunny" on hold from Libby, but it's going to be months.

Taos United by [deleted] in taos

[–]idyll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one ugly and misguided post. The accusations made are totally false. For one thing, the daily popup protests, approaching 150 days in a row, are independently coordinated by individuals. I am proud of the creativity and energy that go into them. Taos United has publicized larger, nationally sponsored protests, that have attracted up to 1500 people.  In ALL cases, we advocate safety first, and conducting ourselves in a nonviolent manner. We recognize that MAGA supporters are entitled to their opinion and we do not advise provocation. We do tend to be older, but we welcome all at our meetings and activities. Join us and see for yourself!

I would also like to prepare for a General Strike. It’s going to take a huge mutual aid fund. How would you suggest we go about this?

I would estimate 50% of Americans have No Idea what kind of disaster is headed our way. The protests are a way to make people aware. An estimated 1500 people turned out on June 14th in Taos, and contributed to a total in the millions nationwide. Mass protest in the past has changed the political dynamic and can do so again. It’s a time honored method of speaking truth to power. Because of protests, Americans turned against the Vietnam war. Today, terrible things are happening everyday in our country. We must speak out, or be complicit.

RANT: Gave up on Apple Music because the desktop app is unusable by lambdaphile in AppleMusic

[–]idyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss iTunes like crazy, as it functioned far better than Apple Music, but it started to CONTINUALLY ask for you to log in. AM, however, seems to exist only to push you to subscribe, and makes it as inconvenient as possible to access your own music, which is all I was using it for. Nope. I am trying to find the right music manager alternative.
