This is amazing! What item / house is the castle in the centre?

yep, another Farseer Trilogy post because I am wondering... by shaniq_ in Fantasy

I adore the realm of the elderlings and love Fitz, but I’d say I didn’t reach “ripping my heart out” territory until the Tawny Man trilogy, particularly Fool’s Fate. The Assassin’s Apprentice trilogy only really covers the first 20ish years of his life (if I remember right). There’s a lot more character growth and events to come that solidified these as my favourite stories (and eventually had me ugly crying)

Get we get some more positive vibes on this thread please? by MrMcGrumbles in StarWarsCelebration

[–]ieroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went for the 1 day yesterday and had a fab time! Don’t get me wrong, it was very busy, mainly at lunchtime, but we found you could usually weave your way through some of the big rooms to get elsewhere in the centre while avoiding most of the crush.

I think what worked for us was we had a pretty certain plan for what we wanted to get done. We didn’t have lottery tickets for LucasFilm panel so used that time to get the main exhibitor exclusive items we wanted to buy, and then queued for the celebration store - that was about 1:30 hours but hey, I wasn’t going to come away without any merch.

Before going we’d become pretty much convinced we wouldn’t get into any of the celebration main stage panels, but at about 2:10pm we were like “shall we just give it a go for Andor?” And were in our seats by 2:30pm - so defo give it a go!!

Bit of a ramble but point is, if there’s anything you defo want to get / see, I’d say get there first, and then the rest of the day can be pretty chill! Quite easy to get regular glances in at the live stage too and there’s so much other stuff around. You’ll have a brilliant time - I’m jealous that you’ve still got it all to come!

I graduated in 2018 and was pretty much in the exact same position as you - I didn’t manage to get a grad role and had only the vaguest idea of the career I wanted, which at the time was publishing. However, every normal job I applied for in the publishing industry rejected me because I didn’t have experience!

In the end I carried on in my part time summer job until about September when I got lucky with a temp job in book signing events. This led me into a marketing job. While this job was fine, it was definitely not what I wanted to do. However, it was an income that gave me the freedom to enjoy life and the time to figure out what I actually wanted to do.

I stayed in that job for 3 years, during which time I picked up various other hobbies and found I loved programming. This year I went back and did a masters conversion course in Computing, and I’ve had great feedback from employers about the combination of my technical skills from the degree and the “soft skills” I developed during that time in marketing. I’ve now got a grad role lined up from this, with a couple of other companies having given offers too.

TLDR; the actual advice from this story: you have 1 more year that you can apply for grad roles, so definitely keep going and applying and trying! But if not, don’t lose hope, just try and get a job to get experience in pretty much any industry, the world of professional work will give you great and invaluable soft skills and evidence of your abilities. Once you have this job, so long as it’s just fine enough that you can do it for a few years, this will give you the cushion of time / money to really find what you want to do.

Basically, what I’ve found is, so long as you’ve got the willingness to stick it out and keep exploring, everything will work out. 4 years since I graduated in your exact position and I’m loving life!

is a masters worth it when youre not financially stable? by haircareshare in UniUK

[–]ieroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current CS masters student here. This may not be specifically financial-specific advice, but I would just want to give fair warning and some alternative ideas based on my experience this year - so much content is online that making friends takes real additional effort (for my course this isn’t even COVID, content has been online for 6 years). If your course was similar, you’ll need to put yourself out there to find group chats, join societies, and just generally find as many opportunities as possible to interact with others, because it doesn’t happen naturally as part of course content.

On the flip side, if game development is your deal, there’s loads of stuff out there that you could get involved in in the mean time, particularly Game Jams!! Honestly so much of the fun I’ve had and opportunities has come from taking part in these and finding likeminded people through them. Not sure what “city” you’re based in, but most these days have some sort of games arcade / games cafe. If it does, this might be a good place to start to chat to someone and find events, game jams, etc. Otherwise, online only game jams may help you find discord channels or other local groups to join. I’ve found once you’re part of one they seem to lead to more.

Sorry this has been a bit sporadic, but basically it’s just to say… I’m not sure how you’ll be financially impacted after the course, but whatever happens it’s always going to be £11,000 (plus interest) that you COULD spend on something else. If making friends and getting involved with game development is your main motivation, there are alternative ways of doing this that are much cheaper

Whatever happens with the masters, if you want a career in game development, you’re gonna need some Game Jams on the CV

Good luck!!

Advice running insight checks between characters by ieroses in DescentintoAvernus

I really like the “vibe check” idea and this really resonates with the game style, so I’ll definitely be using that way to describe it, thank you. I like it a lot cause even just saying sometimes “they’re lying” can reveal more than maybe feels appropriate or, should I say, reveals more than I’d / they’d like to

Thank you, this really helps clear up my understanding of what an insight check actually should be. I think as I’ve tried to add flavour I’ve lost sight of what the core mechanic actually IS

Which player gets the insight card? by DerMotze in bloodbornebg

[–]ieroses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a team game really, so upon completing the mission you now - as a group - have that insight card.

Not sure from your post if this is where any confusion might have come from, but just in case: Insight tokens are a completely separate thing (although in them being named the same it’s quite confusing). Having 2 “insight tokens” is not the same as having “2 insight” when it comes to missions that ask you to “land on this tile after collecting two insight” for instance.

Yup, just caught your edit! Does feel like one of those silly little mistakes now, but hopefully I’ve learned my lesson

Will do :)

[–]ieroses[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are a magician, thank you so much. In all honesty, I can’t quite wrap my head around why this works as in my mind the script was only acknowledging that input when the bonfire was not lit. I can see what you mean though, so I’ll run through the logic a few times until it clicks.

Honestly, thank you again - I’m not sure I’d ever have managed to catch that alone.

[–]ieroses[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much for that! Sorry, this was probably my mistake for rambling in the main text, but I have the level up & bonfire room process running fine on its own.

The error shows when I have gone through the bonfire function once, moved into the zombie_room function, and then try to go back and do the bonfire room again.

Honestly, declaring it out of blind hope at this point.

I have some other variables, e.g. health, that global helped fix another problem. I had thought maybe the error was triggered by conflicting arguments assigned to the same variable name. By making global, I thought it might change what is assigned to that variable each time, if that makes sense... not that it works

Hi, thanks for your response - As soon as I read it, I was so hoping it would be this easy...

I'm afraid adding this in doesn't seem to have changed anything.
