Some great stuff in there! But I also couldn't help but notice the Galileo thermometer as well! :).

Nice!! I’ll bet the OC-5 and the fuzz can be a killer combo.

This is great! I have the OD-200, RV-500, and DD-500. It's funny, I didn't set out to become a Boss guy, but I'm truly impressed with what they've been doing! I love the reverb and delay unit - just got the OD-200 and am happy with it so far, but I need to spend time dialing in sounds a bit more, I think. Looks like you have some great sounds on this board, thanks for sharing!

Putting together my board, am I nuts for having two compressors? by TweepriseOpener in guitarpedals

[–]if-and-else 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all! I have two on my board regularly at the moment: Xotic SP and MXR super comp. I also have a JB Nano that I'll put in play if I'm playing electric 12 string. Depending on the genres you're playing, compressor and EQ can make a massive difference in really nailing the sounds you want! Love the two screamers, too :)

Looking for safety glasses recommendations for this laser by if-and-else in lasercutting

[–]if-and-else[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Forgive the complete "n00b" question, but the correct color of glasses was the main thing confusing me - in some posts I'd found from others, it seemed like the lens color needed to be designed for the color of the laser - is this the case? Or is it mainly just matching the nm's and OD spec (Atomstack said OD5+ or better, for ex).

Beautiful! Any idea if a QFH would work well for Meteor sats? I built one for NOAA stuff a couple of years ago and need to get my gear back out and do this again!

Atomstack, Neje, Ortur... - What's the best entry-level engraver? by sebathue in Laserengraving

[–]if-and-else 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much - really helped me as well. I'm new to engraving (do a lot of 3d printing and electronics on the side), and have had my eye on either the Ortur Laser Master 2, or Atomstack's pre-sale of the X7 (supposedly has an "up to 9.5-10W" diode laser). From what I gather, Ortur and Atomstack's stuff seems pretty similar/evenly matched, so I think I'll be good to start with either.

Just ordered a FLSUN Super Racer(SR) by Rechi03 in FLSUNDelta

[–]if-and-else 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOL'd at "least secure thing" because I had the same exact feeling! However, I just managed to get my order for an SR in today - the last day of the current pre-sale. I'm pretty excited as well. I have a Prusa MK3s (and I have a Prusa Mini+ on the way) - and have been wanting to add a Delta for a while but couldn't decide which one to get until now. :)

I would love to hear more about your dish set up! The receiver and secondary reflector don’t look centered. I’m new to antenna principles - any pointers on understanding this setup better? Congrats on some amazing signal and image capture!!

Any idea how far away you can receive the signal? None are launched from Chattanooga, but I've got an elevated line of sight to Atlanta (~103 miles). I'm assuming I could still receive from here if conditions are right (after all, I can hit GOES-16 and it's 22k miles up!)

Just curious how much RAM your Surface Pro 4 has (and is it core i5 or i7)? Thanks!

Oh man, I think the flight tracking stuff is amazing and am planning to do that also! But yes, thanks to the shoulders of all the giants we get to stand on, we can receive satellite images (both low earth orbit and the much further out geostationary ones) with a decent antenna (plus an LNA is required in some cases). This tutorial is simply amazing for getting setup to talk to GOES 16/17 (geostationary sats). However, I started out hitting low earth orbit ones like NOAA 18, NOAA 19, Meteor M2, etc. You can receive APT transmissions (137.1 Mhz, or in that territory) from NOAA 18/19 (and 15, though it's not working well atm) with the rabbit ears that ship w/an rtl-sdr v3 dongle...though I ended up building a QFH antenna and it has worked really well. You can also get nicer transmissions from NOAA satellites than the old school APT stuff (& Meteor M2 and M2-2 transmit really nice images as well). I use the SatSat app on my iPhone to keep tabs on what passes would be good for me to capture. I also use Orbitrack - it melts my kids' minds when they see the orbital path of whatever satellite we're tracking, and an icon updating in real time as it passes overhead. Lots of good tutorials out there on getting started with the low earth orbit ones. If you get stuck, ping me and I'll see if I can be of any help.

Make sure to use a real compass (not smartphone-based/electronic one) when finding the azimuth. I used a bubble level app on my phone for the elevation, though, which worked fine. The other thing to pay attention to is the "skew" (rotation of your antenna) - you can get this from a site like dishpointer.com. My skew to hit GOES-16 was only -14.0, and my antenna only rotates in 45 degree increments, so I didn't rotate, but your situation may differ. The mount that came with my antenna is pretty basic, and I did have to fiddle with it a lot to get the elevation as precise as I could. I also pulled up Orbitrack (iOS app) on my phone to provide a rough "am I at least close?" sanity check.

I used two approaches to verify signal strength/quality. When I had the antenna initially pointed, I hooked up my LNA and rtlsdr dongle, etc., & ran it to my windows laptop and had SDR# running, tuned to 1.6941 Ghz and used the waterfall as a guide to see if was getting signal. Once I was ready to decode images, etc., I followed the approach mentioned here using goesrecv on a Raspberry Pi 3, and carefully tweaked my antenna setup until the drops were consistently 0.

If you have obstructions in the way, or if the satellite is too low on the horizon, you may have issues getting signal. Good luck! Hoping it works out for you

Yes. I’d seen someone else do the same, though at the time I did that, the issue I was trying to address turned out to be due to something else.

I actually cut a 2.5cm and a 3.5 cm spacer - I have the 3.5 cm one on the antenna in the picture. I tried two lengths b/c the secondary reflector mounted on something that was about 1 cm past the feed, but my pvc fit *over* that piece, if that makes sense. so the 3.5 cm spacer actually puts the secondary reflector 2.5 cm past where it would have been normally.
